Welcome to the fun facts section: Yes, Kenny Ortega directed High School Musical(s) also. Mary makes occasional barking type sounds because Kathy Najimy was channeling a bloodhound vibe connected to her power of smelling children. Yes, Winifred is the eldest sister. And Bette Midler's favourite role she's played. Disney has had consistency and tone issues regarding how uptight they are. But there hadn't been many non-horror films to angle for 'family friendly Halloween movie' before this. I suppose most assumed the adult humor would go over kids' heads, or was still better than violence, idk. Thackery was played by Sean Murray, aka McGee from NCIS. His voice got dubbed by Jason Marsden tho (see most 90's TV). Satan and Medusa are played by _brother & sister_ Garry & Penny Marshall. I assume that trying to blow the candle out would have worked as well as burning the book did, but yeah, ya shoulda tried. The fountain in the park across from the high school from the post-kiln celebration scene is the same one from Friends. Re: "white witch" - think more light mage/dark mage, tho you're not wrong about the palette of this film. Dani & Thackery always seemed fairly innocent to me. She's a kid who bonded with a talking kitty when her own brother wants little to do with her. He's projecting some of his regret and protective instincts from Emily. Sarah tho - I was gonna say she goes after every fella with a pulse, but she's still flirting with Zombie!Billy too. She _thirsty,_ man. Disney stupidly released this movie in the summer, worried about it competing with _Nightmare Before Christmas._ It bombed, but later found its audience thru TV reruns. Hits a lot of nostalgia buttons, and yeah for me, it's not Halloween without it.

It was totally a thing to just walk into Halloween parties in my neighborhood in the 90s. One of the reasons I really love this movie is that I remember Halloweens like they show it here--kids everywhere, every house giving out candy, open parties with bobbing for apples, box mazes and haunted houses at local schools/churches... That's why I get so sad when no kids go trick-or-treating anymore; at least I have a bucket of full size candy bars as a consolation prize. ;D

I know this comment is like 2 years late but just wanted you to know that it is possible Disney would make a Hocus Pocus 2 considering that 3 years ago on their 25th anniversary a Hocus Pocus Book 1 and 2 were released. Book 1 was cool because it gave more detail into when Emily Binx went missing and how she’d see the witches in town and she didn’t understand why everyone hated the witches. And then book 2 was really good, very diverse and had a few left turns that you just don’t expect. And of course it has to do with Max and Alisons daughter, her girlfriend and a couple other kids in town, including the blonde bully J. He becomes principal of the high school after him and his friend were found 3 days after Halloween, apparently they almost died.. But yeah. Would love to see Disney turn that into a movie.
