Was at this show! Cold misty night, Springsteen showed up. Will never forget it! Rip Ben Keith

Just want to clarify something for the guitar players here. It's a 6 string banjo, tuned in standard tuning but down a whole step to DGCFAD. Chords are A, G, E, with a D in the last line of the chorus. It's not double drop D, or drop D, or open G. Plain old standard tuning, just down a step. That's why none of the cover versions you hear sound even remotely close to the original, because everyone thinks he's in some dropped d tuning or on a 5 string banjo.

This was good as the studio version. Jesus, what a superb musician/lyricist/voice. Next to John Lennon, Neil was my Mom's favorite. She loved e-thing he did.

Went to see multiple bands playing Neil Young tribute music. Myself and about 4 guys began loudly singing this song before the music started. The message is brilliant. As a musician he was, and remains, a great explorer. Some people somewhere walked out on Neil early in his career. But they don’t matter.

Kind of like Pete Seeger, who played the banjo more like it was a guitar.

First video i can see where this song is played. Saw neil two times but always with CH and unfortunately he never played that kind. Wish i saw 88 or 89 tours. Neil is a wonderful schysophrenic but pity he does not tour with all his bands at same time. Thanks for the post.

Neil's playing a 6 string banjo. Most banjos are 5 string. It's been tuned in double drop D and dropped an entire step. He does a lot of songs on guitar in this tuning.
@mickeywoolard638 жыл бұрын
One of my favorite tunings to play in. He uses it alot.

It is a guitjo, or banjitar, a regular 6 string guitar neck on a banjo type body, allowing it to be played like a guitar

Hold the phone. I do believe we have a different drop D VARIANT here... instead of dropping the first string, RAISE it just half a step (in this case since we're a whole step down raise it to D#). You can clearly see that he uses a single hammer-on, from an open string, to get the D# to E grace note on the C chord (view it best at 2:58). The opening chords then are [F] xx0032 [Eb] xx3210 [C] 000231 (hammer on the first string and yes, we do now have a "D" major chord that LOOKS like a Dm!). I do know that he plays double drop D, Ambulance Blues for instance on this album but I've always considered this one a mystery and now finally being able to see him play it on his guitjo and with your lead on the double drop D I'm going to call this one mystery solved
