Just ordered a set to replace the 5100’s in the front of my Tacoma. This video answered a lot of the questions I had, well done!

I gave you a thumbs up. You did a lot of work on this video and it is very informative. Question: Did you say that you can put these shocks on a Semi? I own a Semi and I could use a better shock than the crappy Monroe's that the dealership always wants to put on. Thanks sir.

Thank you! Yes, the original intent for these dampers was to target HD and ton-plus trucks; Bilstein's SoCal crew saw the potential for light trucks and adapted them. I don't know much about Bilstein's big-truck applications, however. There's a lot more about them in the story at Off-Road.com. Apologies for the tardy reply - the mothership has been going through a massive back-end update. jf

did you say you got the bilsteins off a ram 2500? or did i hear that wrong???

I have a few questions if you don't mind. What shocks and springs did you have on the front previously? What setting are the Bilsteins at and how much total lift did you end up with? Do you feel like they handle the added weight of your bumper well? Do you have a winch on it too? Thanks!

Good afternoon. Every question you've got has probably been answered in a build story on Off-Road.com (most covered 4R ever?), but because I'm here: the truck was on the Tundra 5100 frankencombo for years, with a few homebrewed tweaks for functionality. The 6112s are set two rings from the top, and the truck stands about 2.5 inches above stock. The front always look low, however, because the FJ80 springs in back are really tall. The 6112s are not as firm as the Tundra'd 5100s, but they damp much more progressively. They're smoother, even with the big bumper, especially at speed. No winch yet (you don't do adventure journalism to get rich), and I'm not sure if adding one will necessitate trying on a firmer set of Tundra 6112s... jf

@@justinatoff-roaddotcom3705 Hey Justin! I have a very similar set up on the back end of my 2002...fj80 8 wraps but with some beefy FJ80 shocks. I'm curious about the c-clip setting on the 6112s...currently I have 5100s set on the lowest notch on '07 sequoia front springs with a 1" spacer; not a fan. I have about 1.25" of rake which I love and want to keep; back is higher, obviously. You said you have the clip set 2 rings from the top...do you happen to know how much rake you have or could provide any additional info on these; I'm going to order some 6112s, but I'll have them assembled and would like to get the height right the first time. Thanks in advance!

Think these will run softer in washboard roads and AZ dirt roads over the Fox 2.0? Wife’s complaining about rough ride. Ranger FX4. 2020

What are the limiting straps for??? I don’t see the purpose because the stock set up won’t drop so far your axles fall out..

At what point would i need straps like that on a 3rd gen? I run 5100s at stock ride height.

Love to. Bilstein 6112s up front with TC arms and a ton of Tundra take-offs. The rear are eight-coil FJ80 springs with some worn out Dodge 2500 front shocks (the length was right, but the damping is so-so - we're going to put a set of 5160s on soon). The live axle is located with Rock Hound trailing arms and a homemade Panhard. There's more info than this in the video, or you can see the whole build arc of this 4Runner on Off-Road.com. Again, sorry about the late response. jf

The narrator keeps saying "progressive"to describe these but Bilstein says they are digressive.
@bradarsenault6984
@bradarsenault6984 3 жыл бұрын
@John "still"? They are for trail running at speeds faster than a crawl and well mannered on road. The only thing they don't do well is big hit rock crawling, which a Tacoma isn't going to do well with any amount of bolt on shocks.
@bradarsenault6984
@bradarsenault6984 3 жыл бұрын
@John that's ignorance speaking. Each has its own strengths and weaknesses. If one was "better", the other wouldn't exist. It's not like it costs more to make them one way or another. Progressive and digressive are broad generalities, too. I think the 6100 is only digressive into mid stroke, then linear. I'm sure dyno graphs are out there somewhere if your really want to see the damping curves

@John I am not familiar with the 890 coil spring, but it seems to be a 2" lift coil for stock weight rigs. What tires/size? 5100s are digressive iirc. How do you have the 5100s set and what don't you like about the way it feels?

I'll never understand why people insist on pronouncing Blistein wrong, even when they know they're saying it wrong, like the guy in this video. Just say it the way the company says it ffs, why is that so hard?

Lockers are nice, but no substitute for driving a better line. The third-gen is remarkable without diff-locks. I only use mine at full twist. This truck went 95% of everywhere it was pointed without any lockers for years. jf
