2011 Xterra Pro4X with 6-speed manual, bone stock. Superb vehicle with one failing: the rear leafs are WAY too soft. Even empty the thing bottomed out on mild dips, and this is from the factory (bought it used from a neighbor with only 9,000 miles on it). Loaded out with my overlanding gear the thing is just not adequate for challenging feral roads (I do a lot of Baja trips). I’ve got about 90,000 on it now. I’d like to get about 2” of lift and chuck those damn leafs. Is this too soon to throw out the factory Bilsteins the Pro4X came with?

I added those in my 2015 Silverado in the rear and I have a Rough Country 3 inch lift struts in the front and it worked out great for me. I know not everyone likes their truck to ride stiff but I prefer to go into corners and not have that body roll. As an owner of a 2019 Colorado Crew Cab 4x4, V6, that I’m totally satisfied with the way it runs an rides. I was interested in leveling the look. However I also tow about once a month, with a 26’, 4,400-6,400lbs. So I could not go over the 2” mark, then tow level without air bags in the rear. So I decided strut spacers were all or nothing, plus only add hight. So I decided upon Bilstein 5100 RHA Struts/Shocks, both to balance the ride. So I set them at 1.9”, that works out perfectly! Being able to tow level. But most importantly, not only hight in front, but added suspension travel! That has really helped a lot off road with big hits that used to cause the front to bottom out, even on the road! Now hardly ever! With superior dampening, especially towing, with a weight distribution hitch, that set the truck/trailer nice an level! I’d advise anyone who is contemplating a leveling kit with spacers to look into the Bilstein!

I have 5100s all around on my 5th generation 4runner with SPC ucas. I love the ride. I really have been happy how it turned out. With the stock springs on the top perch, my lift in front is 2 and a half inches before my new tires. I have Bilstein lift springs in the rear getting me almost 2 inches of lift there. I'm now running 285 70/17s. I'm going to put about 160 lbs of winch and bumper on the front, so I am looking to see about changing the springs eventually.

@@PandasUNITE I am still pretty happy with the ride. I added the winch bumper and with the extra weight, I lost about 3/4 of an inch front lift. Most of these reviews focus on comparing off-road performance, but I want to know if there is a significant difference on-road. I like to drive aggressively so handling stability on pavement is my top priority but I want to get more into off-roading so I also want something I can grow into and won't need to upgrade for many years. I don't mind spending a little more money for a product that performs better in all situations, will last longer and give me room to grow into it, even if I don't necessarily need the capability now. I'm a firm believer in the buying once and crying once, rather than saving a few buck now only to be disappointed later.

Hey thank y’all so much for this video! Incredibly informative! I’m looking to get the 5100 kit, and was told that you shouldn’t max them out to the 2.5” inch height because it will reduce the height of the shock.. is there any truth to this? (I drive a 18 tacoma). I’m also gonna be adding UCA’s. My last question is if i add 33s if they would clear or would i have to do some minor plastic trimming? thanks in advance!
@AlldogsOffroadCoop2 жыл бұрын
More than anything, maxing the height reduces ride quality. For 33" you'll have to trim some plastic.
@eldorado962 жыл бұрын
"...reduce the height of the shock" The more precise way to view it is that raising the ride height using this adjustment is also consuming exactly that much of the upward travel/extension of the shock. Probably not a big deal by itself because the other components (in OEM form) are going to limit range of motion anyway. If your UCAs are intended to increase range of motion, maybe you need a longer than OEM shock anyway.

Due to the shock shortages this year, I had to go with 6112 with 5100 rears in my 3rd gen Tacoma. Might upgrade to 5160's in the future but not sure if it's better just to save for a whole new setup down the road. Maybe 8112's lol.
@AlldogsOffroadCoop3 жыл бұрын
5100 rears are still a very solid shock. You would likely be better off putting that money into a different upgrade on your truck

@@marcoallende3683 Loving the setup, took the truck on a 500 mile off road trip to Death Valley and the Inyo Mtns. Have the 6112's in the front made the ride smoother than my buddy's truck who has 5100's all around. If you're planning to add any steel bumpers or winches in the front, I would get upgraded 650 lb springs. I believe the default spring for the 6112 is 600 lbs.

@@khantra4568 no plans to add any weight, bumper or winch, just want to level it and improve my ride quality. Sounds like the set up I'd go for. I'm pretty set on getting the 6212, when they're finally available, but curious about springs. I keep hearing people complain about rough, stiff ride quality with a preloaded spring to achieve 2" up front. The kits I'm seeing on their website come with a spring and am hoping that would prevent any issues with a rough ride.

How does the 6112 ride on the road, please define. Because I have the 5100 front, rear set to stock with ome 885 and a 1’s block in the rear. The ride quality is jarring. Stiff and way to stiff for commuting daily. So I debating if I should buy the 6112 or go back to stock

Can i use bilstein 5160 or 5165 in my landcruiser fj40 with leaf springs ?
@blcdad2 жыл бұрын
With the 6112s and the different coil spring weight capacity options available it looks like there are some things to consider with the three variables of coil spring weight capacity, strut clip length and lift amount. How do you determine what setting for the strut clip for any given coil spring to achieve a specific lift height? For example if I choose a light duty spring and place the clip on position #1 will that give me the same lift as using a heavy duty spring and the clip on position # 1.
@spatulaman27532 жыл бұрын
Springs are typically the same length. The difference is in the diameter of the coil spring wire. Thicker coils are heavy duty.

Great video! Answered some questions for me. I had 5100s put on my Colorado. Put it at the highest "2.6" setting and yes it was "leveled" and cleared the front tires, (I also went up one tire size) and it ended up making it spongy and in need of rear stabilizer) I also experienced a 75mph and up shake. So far I have had 4 unsuccessful balances and 3 bad alignments! What happened? Also I went from oem sized Michelin street tires to "Patagonia" Milestar semi-offroad tires. Are the front coil springs less "loaded" when you go up from stock height? 3 of the Patagonias took 1/4oz-1/2oz of weight to balance, and the forth takes 4.5 ozs.
@trackntrail28693 ай бұрын
The Patagonias are known for being harder to balance and don't have the best quality control. Get a higher quality tire that will balance with less weight.

Great vid, but I need help. Long story short I run 5100 front,rear set to stock with ome885 up front 1’block in the rear. I hate the ride, it’s way to stiff an firm for daily driving. Jarring to say the least. I have a 19 taco that since 19 I hit the trails 6 times. My question is should I go with the 6112? What spring? An what clip to achieve a 2 inch lift. If you are happy with your ride quality we'd suggest sticking with the springs provided. You can pick up springs with a longer free height and higher rate if you wanted to tune your ride a bit more.

@ShockSurplus2 жыл бұрын
That vehicle doesn't have coilovers available, unless you go with a full conversion kit, which is unnecessary for what you're going after. You can do a 2.5" lift with the torsion keys alone, and get Bilstein 5100s to match that lift height.
