I've always felt so blessed to be born and raised here. It's always been a yearly treat that my family goes to the Biltmore House at Christmas. So beautifully decorated and it really takes the breath away to just be in such a beautiful home and let your imagination run with how things had to be at the time the home was occupied by family and guests. My dream world be to just be lucky enough to stay in the home intend for a whole week as if I lived there. That would be the gift of my lifetime

I knew Biltmore in the 1960s. And I find myself wondering who ... "ran" it at that time. Yes, George Washington Vanderbilt II built it, in the 1890s - and then lived there with his wife Edith and daughter Cornelia - born in 1900. But George died in 1915, Edith remarried in 1925 and must have moved away (to Rhode Island, I think) - and Cornelia herself, though she married John Cecil in 1924, left Biltmore in 1932, divorced John Cecil, and moved to Europe. She died in 1976 - in England - when her sons George and William Cecil inherited Biltmore. The implication in this video seems to be that Cornelia was some sort of grande dame of Biltmore (a la Maggie Smith), presiding over the place for decades. She wasn't. She left as a young woman - never to return. So who was in charge of Biltmore all those years - from 1932 till 1976? That's 44 years. Much is made here of the Vanderbilts, but I wonder if it was the Cecils who saved Biltmore. John Cecil was born into an English aristocratic family like the characters we see in Downton Abbey. Maybe the Cecils' know-how about running estates in England was the key to Biltmore's salvation.

this is a really good question and something I was wondering myself. maybe one day we will get an answer, and I wonder how all of those treasures were left untouched all of those years in the house. how did they keep it in such good condition? unreal.

Yes Cecil saved Biltmore House. Even though Edith opened it to help keep it and Asheville afloat after the depression, Cecil details the downturn and his involvement to restore it in America's Castles. He came back from Europe as banker with a plan to make it profitable.♥️🙏

I have been there one time, about a year ago. The ticket was $75. it was well worth it. If you go, start early and wear comfortable shoes. The tour goes on forever, I actually got tired of it You will see the Masters bedrooms, all the way down to the servants quarters. I do wish they had included the bathrooms. you can tour Candler house here in Atlanta and go into the bathrooms and the tourguides say its the most popular. Then you go visit the grounds, which also go on forever and are worth the money by itself. For the house to be the biggest private residence in the US, it is a very cosy and comfortable place. You would be happy to live there, not because it is rich, but because it is a warm relaxing place. It is not a palace with gilt all over it. Very tastefully done. When you tour where the guests stay, look on the door, there is the original place card with the guests name on it where it has been for 80 years i am amazed nobody has taken the cards. i looked up one of the names just to see who stayed there and it was the husband of one of the daughters. Also, you get a winery tour, i was halfway looped when I toured, it helped my arthritis as i walked for miles through the place. And, you will only see a portion of the house. It would takes weeks to see it all. I loved the place.

The bride, and her family, who we are very close to had rented it for the week. They also rented the Hunting Cabin. It was so cool to stay there. We also got a tour of the entire castle. I was doing some background reading on the van der Bilts and learned that Cornelia van der Bilt's fourth great-grandparents were a mixed-race pirate from Morocco and a self-acknowledged woman of the night. Jackie Kennedy Onassis is also related to the same pirate ancestor. The local people in New Amsterdam were disgusted with their moral character and threw them out of their community. They were involved in many lawsuits. CNN broadcaster Anderson Cooper should be proud to have descended from such good stock.

I'd be willing to bet the same is true for a lot of wealthy families, pirates back then were quite often wealthy people from good families or military men that were given a privateers license by the monarchy of their respective countries which made it "legal" for them to commit piracy on the ships and colonies of countries they were considered to be at war with, so someone considered to be a pirate by many may well be a respected member of a king or queens court

Ironically though, a Vanderbilt did live at Blenheim.Blenheim is laid out like a traditional palace with the enfilade style room layout.Highclere is closer to Biltmore and the grand hall at Highclere does remind one of Biltmore's dining room.

Disagree. Biltmore isn't even that large either... theres a few grand rooms but most of it is meh and not that well preserved and not that great of furnishings. You can tell most of the furniture is 19th century replicas of Louis XV and Louis XVI style and alot of it is scratched. Highclere...sure isn't the most impressive stately home but Biltmore can't compare to Chatsworth or Blenheim or Burghley House.
@tamaracarter1836
@tamaracarter1836 4 жыл бұрын
@Craig Parham Of course you’re welcome to have that opinion, but I must say I disagree - “tiny” well they are both similar sizes, “poorly furnished” that’s subjective I suppose (I personally disagree) and “run down” it certainly isn’t. However if it isn’t to you’re taste that’s fair enough (it certainly isn’t the finest house the country has to offer). If you’re interested, I’d like to give you a (rather long) list of all different types of castles/ stately homes in mostly England (but some from elsewhere in the UK), that I made for an Australian friend of mine who wanted to visit as many as he could when he came over. I’ve ordered them into different categories so it should be easy to follow depending on what you want, for example houses similar to “Chatsworth” would be under the section I titled *“Palaces”/ stately homes (Classical styles e.g Palladian or Baroque [est.1616-1830]):* anyway hope you’re interested. I’d just like to also say that you’ll obviously find beautiful castles/ Palaces etc all over Europe, I’m just showing one’s from the UK as I know these the best. Plus I Biltmore is fantastic and well worth a visit for anyone who wants a different experience to any in Europe!

No, you should not compare Biltmore to Downton Abbey . It's very inappropriate .Actually, it's almost indecent.Analogy is possible only in the mind of those that have no notion of history. You are comparing a Hamburger to a Beef Wellington ....Just saying since comparison is so important in this sale pitch. Lets be serious , Highclere Castle was built in 1679 and it's history steeped in British aristocracy. Highclere Castle has hosted prime ministers, kings and queens. Biltmore, built in 1895, was the residence of a family that quickly struggled to up keep the grandeur of the estate and had to converted it into a tourist attraction. By saying so, I do not wish to smother any beauty of Biltmore Estate. The comparison is so ridiculous that it impoverish the image of Biltmore Estate.

I would tend to agree with you. Thanks for the info. The comparison is probably just a sales pitch. To get viewers.

Very nice of course but let us not forget just who built these palaces. They were very skilled and low skilled labor...paid almost nothing and with monopoly profits that illegally awarding the Vanderbilts many 100s to1000s of times what the labor was paid.

If Eugenia's cat had been my cat... that cat better have had 9 lives. Those decorations would have been awesome to pass down from generation to generation. They would be prices by now. Stupid cat.

Tankersley J No, not really. Biltmore is grander and is probably in between shape these days. I don't think any of these houses see much excitement these days but in their hay day, the Vanderbilt houses often tended to have bigger, splashier parties than many of their English counterparts. I think it was at the first dinner dance that Alva Vanderbilt threw at her Marble House in Newport that had a specially built dining table made for the occasion. It was a French marquetry piece with fire gilded legs that had a trough running down the middle and filled with pure white sand. Each dinner guest was given a Tiffany sterling pail & shovel and was invited to dig through the sand, where a fortune in diamonds, rubies, emeralds, sapphires and amythests were buried as party favors.

@@carowells1607 Its not grander...its faux grand. The furnishings are subpar. Highclere is filled with actual antiques, Biltmiore is filled with cheaper furniture...gilded age new money. Honestly, I wish they would have picked a different house for Downton... Burghley House would have been great or even Knole House would have been amazing.

Not Downton Abbey - Highclere Castle. You Americans do not distinguish between fiction and reality, do you?
