This guy is one of the best drummers in the world and 9 out of 10 people probably have no idea who the hell he is. If he was alive back in the 50s when jazz was the most popular music he would been one of the most well known drummers alive. There's really nobody I know that plays like Bill Stewart. Amazing sound quality of this video too since his drums sound like they are right in my room.
@CharlieWeller2 жыл бұрын
Yeah.. But then again, he wouldn't have his sound without those drummers from the 50's, 60's, 70's etc.. I hear all of that in his playing - Elvin, Max, Roy, Tony. These were the pioneers.
@dca88212 жыл бұрын
You are so right in that he is one of the very great drummers. In my opinion only Bill Stewart and Brian Blade are true successors of the classic master like Tony, Elvin, Roy etc. There are a lot of great and skillful players one of them is Eric Harland. But very few have developed a style where you only need to hear a few notes and you instantly know it is them.

I met Bill Stewart 10+ years ago when he was playing with Steve Swallow and John Scofield supporting the En Route album. I saw them at the Dakota and then next morning I found myself in line to get coffee at the Hotel and there was Bill Stewart in front of me. As a drummer, I asked him who he gets inspiration for his phrasing from and he told me "Roy Haynes". That was the greatest live musical performance I have ever seen.

Lovely tunes played by a fantastic trio. Shout out to whoever is taking care of the sound reproduction: the drums sound fantastic, the bass is warm and resonant and clear, and the sax sound is on point as well...It's SO refreshing to see/hear a venue that employs folks who know how to mix the sound for this music! Deep gratitude for posting this...🙏❤🤗

his work with timbers and textures and melody on the drumset is just always wonderful .. one of the things I always loved about Bill is the fact that he's so melodically clear that you can see "thru" his playing, you can understand everything he does... I've heard so many times that DeJonette is a melodic drummer and I kind of agreed, until I heard Bill for the first time

It's tape across the underside bow if the cymbal, with some hanging down at right angles. Might be deliberate...might have fallen off a bit.

Was really enjoying this until he had to get all political with his “F U Donald” song/statement. Just play your instrument and spread joy. tired of fellow musicians, celebrities and sports figures always trying to make statements (that goes for all parties - red, blue, black, green, yellow doesn’t matter). Want to make a statement stop playing music and go be a politician and see if you can do better.
