Bing 54 float bowl leaking through the aluminum?

Who knew there was a batch of faulty Bing 54 carburetor bowls that would do this? Basically the aluminum is porous and allows the fuel to seep through the metal. This video was created when I discovered the issue, but had not completely figured out what was happening. I was able to get these bowls replaced and all is working great. Hopefully it will help you if you have a similar issue.

Good investigation Ken! Porous aluminum isn't new. When I worked for GM, we tested leakage through aluminum rims.

It would be interesting to know where they were cast.

I agree. Unfortunately these were some old, unused carbs that had never had fuel in them. They were mfg in the late 90's.

@@jamessharp9790 it could be, but that would be an expensive bowl. These were part of a faulty batch from the mfg so the issue has been resolved, but is something to keep in mind if this issue is found in the future.

@@jamessharp9790 The standard Bing 54 is a 36mm, I would contact Bing directly at [e-mail] or 800-309-2464 for options in the 38-40mm.
