Actually most of the worst beatings were from his wife and this only really happens in his first marriage. Most parents of that time did that kind of stuff, but 5 of his 7 defend Bing, 4 openly, 3 from his second marriage, and 2 from his first. Most of the stuff that was said he did was over exaggerated as the publisher of the book Gary Crosby wrote about his dad, said to add in stuff to get it to sell. Gary Crosby said this to Bing Crosby’s daughter during lunch. Dixie Lee, Bing’s first wife, was the harsh one, Bing wanted to be easier on them. Several of the accounts of “beatings” were from things like killing Dixie’s bird. I don’t condone hurting children as punishment, but that was the norm and many other people did it at the time. Please get your facts completely straight before you go around gossiping about one of the greatest multimedia stars of all time.

Bing's voice alone reigned supreme; during his peak years--1938-1945, even the arrangements had little instrumentation, rising up to the vocal. This is because everyone knew Bing's voice was so good, that the arranger didn't want to "interfere" with his vocal. He stood not waving his arms, have outside noise piped in, or loud instrumentation. None needed. Just a straightforward song/carol/hymn, with great lyrics, melody and meaning. Couple those with Bing's voice, and you have a mega-hit--which "Do You Hear What I Hear?" was.

If you didn't know, this song was written by Husband & Wife Noël Regney and Gloria Shayne Baker during the Cuban Missile Crisis because of the overwhelming dread people were feeling. They were going to put it out around Christmas but hesitated because of the excess commercialism surrounding Chirstmas. But they did. Many beautiful versions have been recorded. To me though, the standard of excellence belongs to Bing Crosby. Coincidentally, Bing recorded his version on the day JFK was assassinated. God bless us all.

On November 24, 1963... two days after JFK's assassination and the day Lee Harvey Oswald was murdered.... Bing Crosby was at NBC studios in Burbank, CA videotaping this, the first TV performance of the song "Do You Hear What I Hear?", lip synching to the now famous recording of it he made for Capitol Records on October 21st. The segment aired on December 13th as part of the Bob Hope Comedy Special. Bing's grief over the death of his friend JFK is clearly visible.
@richardmeyer85397 жыл бұрын
Married couple Noel Regney and Gloria Shayne Baker penned this Christmas carol in October 1962. Generally it was Baker who wrote the lyrics for their songs while Regney composed the music but in this instance it was the other way round. Regney's lyrics are a plea for peace, and they were written during the Cuban Missile Crisis when the USSR was spotted constructing bases for ballistic nuclear missiles in Cuba. These weapons had the ability to strike most of the continental United States and a confrontation was only averted when they were dismantled at the US president's insistence. Baker stated in an interview with the Los Angeles Times years later that neither could personally perform the entire song at the time they wrote it because of the emotions surrounding the incident. "Our little song broke us up. You must realize there was a threat of nuclear war at the time." The song has sold tens of millions of copies and has been covered by hundreds of different artists. It was originally recorded by the Harry Simeone Chorale and their version went on to sell more than quarter-million copies during the 1962 Christmas holiday season. It was Bing Crosby who made the song a worldwide smash hit when he recorded his own version of it for his I Wish You a Merry Christmas album in 1963. Ironically, Crosby laid down his vocals on November 22, 1963, the day that President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas.

I was about 5 years old when I heard this song drifting out of my parents room on a warm african night. My father brought a few things from Canada , but there was a christmas cassette he treasured in the big cupboard . He played drummer boy (and this song) and I still see him looking out into the dark african night as if he could see something in the sky. Those days are long gone and many years later I now look out across the dark snowy Canadian wilderness and see what he saw.
