I think it was important for him to reassure her he was safe. One of his biggest triggers is when someone he cares about gets in a situation where she could be in danger (like his mom used to). With him being in danger, Ana finally experiences this fear from the other side. His rush to reassure her demonstrates how he would want Ana to act when the roles are reversed, which unfortunately she doesn't do until the very end.
