Now, I know Paddington loves his marmalade sandwiches. But how about you make some English-style scones to serve with the marmalade instead?

So, as a Brit, and more specifically one from the south of England, I can say that clotted cream is also an acceptable part of the scone experience, replacing the butter. I will, however, note that the classic cream tea typically involves a berry jam, rather than a marmalade. There is also a certain amount of what some would call controversy surrounding the question of whether to apply cream first or jam. I'm not going to stick my oar into it right now, because I don't think it would further the discussion surrounding the video.

And sure enough, all the comments are of which of cream/jam goes first. Tbf Babish did do scone, clotted cream and jam in his Phantom Thread breakfast one. I can see marmalade working in this context but then it's been a while since I indulged in this treat

I remember maybe a year or so ago, Babish said that he used his neck down video style so the focus is on the subject and not the personality, unlike most KZbin channels with very little substance and a lot of hamming it up for the camera. I mostly agree with that, but I'm also very glad that Babish has started to share more and more personality with us, because there's nothing wrong with getting a little chuckle with my information. Also just wanna say how fucking grateful I am for the 20 second still at the end of the video that prevents KZbin from immediately throwing me into the next video against my will. Babish, you're a saint.

I'm from Yorkshire, we put jam and cream on our scones (scones pronounced like Rhon's) and normally have them at about 2 which is just before afternoon tea, normally scones are only for guests as afternoon tea is generally just cake and tea. This is a national thing not just my household btw.

j a As a Brit, I can honestly say that I’ve never met anyone who puts marmalade on scones. Marmalade is usually used at breakfast on toast, an English muffin or a tea cake at a push but scones are never eaten for breakfast, they are generally eaten for afternoon tea...sometimes elevensies. So they should not be put together. Scones are either buttered or have clotted cream and jam on them...unless they are cheese scones of course. I hope that has made everything a little clearer.

If anyone decides to use navel oranges, I actually recommend using a normal lemon (eureka lemon) instead of a meyer lemon. Navel oranges are a lot sweeter than servile oranges and the sour from the eureka is better for balancing out the sweetness. I squeeze 1 1/2 lemons for every two oranges into my navel orange marmalade, which is also made using cane syrup or sorghum syrup instead of granulated sugar. What comes out is a sweet and tangy but darker marmalade. It also has a slight syrup flavor to it. Sometimes I like to lightly overcook it because it gives the marmalade a butterscotch-like aftertaste that goes perfectly on a pancake, vanilla ice cream or biscuit.

Pro tip from Mary Berry, the queen of cakes: don’t twist the cutter when making scones. They don’t rise quite as well because the dough has twisted. Go straight down into the dough, jiggle if necessary and then come straight back up. The result is even fluffier scone.

@blessed peas Exactly, who on earth puts marmalade on a scone? Also, butter... on a scone... NO. Only people I have come across who do that are Northerners, and I think that's only because the cold has addled their brains. It's clotted cream and jam or no scones for you; as for the order, argue amongst yourselves. I am not getting involved in the Great Devonshire Cornwall Scone Scuffle, ever again.
@Chlorate299
@Chlorate299 4 жыл бұрын
@@Josheroo The solution to that argument is to take two scones and cut the tops off both, apply clotted cream to one top half, jam to the other, sandwich them together and serve sitting on its edge. This forms a scone that satisfies both sides. The bottom halves can be used for less picky people.

Can I suggest skimming off the pith (white bit) from the rind with a sharp knife, then adding the pith to the bag of seeds, helps more pectin to be released from the pith whilst kerbing the sometimes overwhilming bitterness that comes through in the peel. Been making jam in the family for a while and always seem to get a nicer set when the peel and pith are seperated. Also in my experience scones are served with clotted cream and jam! Not sure if you get Rhoddas outside of the UK but its by far the best.

@@konekoray9323 Could never really understand how people like you can so confidently say things with zero clue of what the hell you're talking about. LemonParty was a prank site that would show a full screen image of 3 old men having sex. It's NOTHING of what you just said.

airwavehero I get you. Things don’t usually make me literally laugh out loud anymore, but I couldn’t stop last night
