when I make tamales with my mom we literally use the same ingredients you're using, but in the region of Mexico that we're from (Zamora, Michoacan) our masa is not white: we add a little of the 'spice paste' into the masa and we knead the dough for like 45 minutes straight. I'm not sure what region of Mexico your tamales are from, but if you put that much lard, they're 100% legit; THIS is cultural appreciation so it's a double thumbs-up for me.

Can confirm is a "norteño thing" my mom asks me to go to a nearby "molino" to buy that dough i think its called "Mixtamal" and is often used to make "gorditas" too. There is another version of tamales that my family makes occasionally. They are sweet tamales. We change the dough a bit. We add sugar, cinnamon, and raisins. I've made tamales twice-- once with my mom and grandma, and once solo. It takes a looooong time. It's no wonder they were only made for special occasions or Christmas. I didn't get as fancy as you. I also found there was a good side of the corn husk that made it easier to spread the masa.

Thank you for spreading the word that lard isn't really that bad for you
@dixontriconderoga85246 жыл бұрын
Neither is regular butter, supposedly. All the hate is apparently due to lazy research/bad science. In other words, the general rule is to pay attention to your diet and how the food you consume affects your body.

Dixon Triconderoga butter is actually pretty bad for you in terms of the kinds of fats it contains (bad cholesterol, saturated fats). However, it ultimately all lies in moderation. That being said, lard is far healthier than butter. I'd recommend it over butter (besides, butter has that butter taste and personally, I dislike)

Has anyone mentioned the fact that "tamale" is an english construct and the actual food's name is "tamal"? so un tamal, dos tamales. Just food for thought. (pun intended)
@brunocruz73044 жыл бұрын
I was going to mention that haha

Has anyone mentioned the fact that the word tamale comes from the Nahuatl (Aztec) language not the Spanish , and it was called Tamali by them .. so technically the English name is closer to its original name than the Spanish is ..
@nataliatc14 жыл бұрын
@@ramonpena698 in spanish it is tamal. In náhuatl it is tamalli. Of course, tamal comes from tamalli, thats obvious. Tamale does not exist. nice try -.- they (americans and i dont know who else) say tamale cause they don't know the singular of tamales, not because they know the nahuatl etymology.
@ninjafaceify4 жыл бұрын
@@nataliatc1 So tamal is also wrong if you go to the original language for what it was called. It's not a problem that when a word is translated the spelling changes.....that's just how fucking translations work.
@crazycodplayer114 жыл бұрын
@@nataliatc1 both the anglicized and "spanishized" versions are incorrect given the food is Aztec in origin so you can't claim one languages version to be superior and the other to be non-existent when both are just as (in)correct. Language adapts and changes when transitioning between cultures and there's nothing wrong with that. A word exists if enough people say it does.
