There’s understandably controversy around BetterHelp. I researched the privacy and licensing issues they’ve had in the past, and more than anything I found, I was convinced that they’re worth working with after reading a post by Jonathan Decker over at Cinema Therapy (link below), which extensively outlines the various criticisms. While they’ve sold browser data in the past (never clinical data), they’ve since changed their practices and strictly comply with privacy regulations. All their therapists are licensed and vetted. I personally use the service, and have had a great experience with my therapist. While BetterHelp might not have a perfect history, as they stand now, I believe they are an effective way to provide therapy to those who wouldn't normally be able to access it. All that being said, I'm hearing the criticism loud and clear. They never sold personal data. The federal suit against them specifically states that they didn't, and they've always used only licensed, experienced therapists. The problem was with the wording of their TOS, which said that clients were responsible for verifying licensing, which some people took to mean that Betterhelp didn't verify.
