This is kind of unfair: the only reason the Japanese SDF are as small as they currently are is because of the agreeement with the USA that the USA will defend Japan. If you take USA out of the equation, you have to expect Japan to have a much stronger military force then they currently do and was used in this scenario. I would think a Japan equipped to it's own abilities to manufacture and equip their military would repulse a Chinese invasion of even their smaller islands. Both countries would suffer economically, but I would call it a total failure for China in that case.

Thanks for engaging! however, as this is already a theoretical battle, I am going on the assumption that there was NEVER a defense agreement with the USA. If you are going to remove them entirely, then by the 'rules' of this battle they were never there at all. If all countries were 'reset' after WW2 then Japan would have had a locally developed warforce on par with the powers that were not restricted after ww2 aka China, the USSR, and of course the USA. You have a good point about the islands, except that the islands would be garrisoned by Japanese forces not natives. At best the locals would be grudgingly assisting, at worst they would have a full-on insurrection and be harassing the Japanese forces along with the Chinese.

The question isn't whether or not China would "lose" to Japan military. It's whether or not China would be successful in invading Japan. In a non-nuclear conventional warfare, Japan would never set foot on Chinese soil. That is 100% fact. However, the converse is also true. If the Mongols couldn't conquer Japan in the 13th century, China certainly isn't going to be able to do so against the JSDF.

The context of this comparison is of course that the Japanese have relied almost entirely on the Americans for their defense for most if their history after ww2 and have only recently started building it up again. Still they can count on heavy support of the Americans which means there is less of a need for military spending. In a situation with a Japan independent from american aid, the invasion would be a lot more costly for the chinese.

A problem with a lot of these scenarios are that they assume no allied support. However if Japan did not have allies it would no doubt have spent a lot more money on its military. A more realistic scenario would mean assuming that if America were not an ally of Japan then Japan would at the very least have acquired extra military assets that would be at least the equivalent of what the US currently has based in Japan. If that were the case then Japan could reasonably expect to have access to an additional 60 ships, 300 aircraft and 40,000 extra military personnel. In fact Japan currently only spends 1% of its GDP on defence. Japan would double or even triple its current defence budget if it had no allies.

One big problem China would need to overcome is a lack of a centralized military structure. They have so many different groups performing similar roles yet little cooperation between them, as seen in previous war games. Once they do this, it will significantly strengthen their military capability.

Any Chinese invasion would be preceded by a very long naval/aerial blockade to wear Japan down and thus the real model of the hypothetical war would be Japan's ability to break such a blockade. Starting a war with intent to amphibiously take outlying islands as an early objective would be at best foolish and would certainly not be considered. The war would be aerial, naval and missile reliant with ground troops only entering the fray to finish off the largely vanquished (in naval, air and missile power) combatant.

Taking those small islands would have a similar effect to that of Crimea. It gives China better footing, it allows them to install low range artillery and cut Japan from resources and structure. Replacement of material, especially updated anti ship/air missiles would be much easier for Japan. It's not just a numbers game, it's also distance and logistics based. Such as what is the furthest operational area Chinese fighters can go? And how long could they engage in combat maneuvers before having to retreat to refuel? Then there's the invasion force. How big of a landing army can the Chinese bring to a suitable invasion site? What kind of heavy equipment could they directly offload onto a beach landing, and how much can they bring? And how long before they can expect substantial reinforcements to secure and expand the beach head. Logistics may be somewhat boring, but they're a vital component of any military operation. It's one of the main reasons the war in the Pacific started going south for Japan after just a year of protracted conflict. The vast numbers of the Chinese don't mean squat if they can't get enough troops to an invasion site and hold on to it. Edit: Ok, all those points were addressed. Still, the sheer number of losses China would be looking at wouldn't even be worth the effort in the first place.

Japan has a wide range of manufacturing industries. At the onset of war, those industries can quickly be turned to produce war planes, ships and tanks. Japan will quickly move to secure resources from other countries. Yes a hypothetical war without direct US involvement is possible but an indirect one is not so much. Japan's allies will mobilize supplies to her while I doubt China will have the same due to the fact that an aggression on another country is widely unaccepted thus China will have to fend for itself or invade another resource rich country to keep it's supplies going. The philosophy behind Chinese military is “mainland defence” which is repeatedly emphasised by the communist party. Here are some reasons why I think it’s true and not propaganda. 1. The Army division is China's most well equipped military branch by far. They wouldn’t have such emphasis on Army, aka the least useful force in an invasion and the most useful force when being invaded, if they are not committed to their defence philosophy. 2. Their standard ammunition has a unique caliber of 5.8mm. That makes it a logistical nightmare for munition supply if they decided to invade another country because they can’t utilise ammo from captured forces/factories. However, it will make it equally hard for anyone who invades China because they can’t use Chinese ammo and have to bring supply all the way from their own country. That’s why China is using neither NATO nor WP ammo. So for now at least, China looks to be committed to their defensive military strategy. You can argue that they are trying to claim all of the islands in South China Sea as their territory. But the thing with political issues like border disputes is, you think they are being aggressive but they think they are protecting their own interest like any other country would. It’s fundamentally different from invading a sovereign nation recognised by UN like the US has done countless times. Not to mention other countries like Indonesia and Vietnam etc all have overlapping claims on the same area of South China Sea. It’s a quite normal border dispute. It’s only highly publicised because US in particular thinks their military presence in Asia is being threatened. If instead of islands, China has conflicting claim of a hill with Vietnam, I bet my left arse cheek that US wouldn’t give a flying fuck. In another word, no one would care about some other countries’ boarder disputes if their own interest wasn’t in question. If US acts to defend their interests in Asia, so can China.

I think geography is your country's greatest defense. The JSDF is weak and relies to much on the US for help, by design. With that removed, according to the scenario, it's foolish to try to fight the PLA in direct battle. You rely on a marvelous rail system, including the lovely Shinkansen, for most of your civil ground transport. As a result most of your highways are two lane. You don't have the limited-access, high-speed expressway system running between your major cities like the US Interstate or the German Autobahn which inspired it. Any Chinese forces would essentially be limited to operating where they started because movement on land would be easy to counter. They bad news to this is that the Chinese have a lot of troops they could commit to the operation and none of them would show the least hesitation in killing civilians if so ordered.
