Welcome to Optics4Birding, your go-to channel for in-depth reviews and insights into the world of optics!
We’re excited to bring you the first video in our Binocular Buying Guide series! In today’s video, we’ll talk about three of the most important characteristics to consider when choosing ANY binocular:
Magnification: A dimensionless number that tells you how much a binocular enlarges the image compared to the naked eye.
Objective Lens Diameter: The main factor that influences the size, weight, and light-gathering capacity of a binocular.
Exit Pupil: The image produced by a binocular

It would be nice to compare images from these binoculars next to each other in one shot 🙂

Trouble is it won’t be like viewing them in person because the image is through a camera.

I really appreciated this so much. I never thought about the importance of the exit pupil! Awesome education and video. Now, do you discuss the interpupillary distance in a video somewhere? I have a very narrow set of eyes and am having so much trouble finding binoculars that work. My pupillary distance is 53.5mm, just under the narrowest range on most binoculars, the 54mm. What bins would work well for me? Like the Zeiss Victory SF 10x32 did not work. I've been using very old Nikon Monarchs 10x42 that worked for years until the low end of their pupillary distance did not work on newer versions of the same bins. (Before that, I'd used Nikon Monarch 8x42.)

WOW! Not sure if you have a crystal ball or just great timing. We're going to publish a video about interpupillary distance and eye relief in just a few days! Stay tuned. If your IPD is 53.5 mm, our #1 recommendation by far is the ZEISS SFL! Both the 8x40 and 10x40 models have a minimum IPD of 52 mm. We had one customer with a 53 mm IPD use the 8x40 with no issues, so they should work for you as well. Hope this helps!

What are thoughts on the Opticron Verano 8x42 binoculars?

I don’t know that specific model but you won’t go far wrong with Opticron, they also tend to have longer than usual eye relief which is good for spectacle wearers.

The Opticron Oregon 8x42’s, which are a great value for the money. I bought based on the Cornell bird lab’s review. By the way, I noticed your not carrying the Opticron’s anymore. Why is this? I purchased a pair of Kowa BDII 8x42’s on sale, and they’re clearer and brighter than the Oregons. They’re also more compact and lighter than the Oregons, but the eye relief isn’t as generous. I’m now considering buying a pair of Kowa Genesis 8x33’s. Cheers!
