At the time of his departure from the royal ballet there were stories going around about how entitled he was. But if you've watched/read just a few of his interviews you'll understand why. His mother put him into professional training in hopes that if he made it, they'll have better life, he probably didn't have much of a childhood either. Soon after he's tossed into the gruelling world of professional ballet with all that responsibility on him and alone in a foreign country. He was the youngest principal dancer the royal ballet ever had at age 19, while most other people were probably still in college. Being young and having all these people tell you things not to do, not many of us would appreciate that as well. Working in a company meant that you had colleagues and not necessarily friends, the higher ups only saw you as a dispensable employee. The royal ballet has had a history of disgruntled dancers leaving, big stars like Alina cojocaru and Johann kobborg, even further back with Viviana Durante and a very hasty sending off of Irek Mukhamedov. This kind of situation would leave a lot of us wanting more. I'm really glad that he's on the up and up again and though he may not be in a big company, at least he'll have the freedom he wants.

his mother knew he had the gift that would raise him out of a poor future in the ukraine. the family too, yes. but she kept him off the streets where he has said he would have probably ended up - like the criminals he has said he admired in his home town. the gangster boys. if you listen to the whole interview you know he understands now what his mom gave up in sending him to england to school. i feel her pain. the royal treated him MUCH better than just dispensable. they allowed him great lattitude in how fast he progressed in the company. hell, the let him get away with wearing non-school shirts in class - because he was Sergei! sure, they knew what they had. too bad sergei let other companies down when he was scheduled to perform by backing out. including the Royal! so while he may think he was professional, i can see how big companies might not want to take any more chances on a guy, no matter how fabulous, you aren't sure isn't going to get pissed off and leave.

It seems that the spirit and atmosphere of Royal dos not match with the character of "thick blooded" Eastern Europeans... we dont like political correctness, do have stubborn personalities, and a brave tendency to go against bureaucratic structures. Earlier Zoltan Solymosi, who was a perfect danceur noble, did not last long at Royal either....

It must have been very challenging to leave home at 13 and to go to a private ballet school in London, England.The fact that Sergei decided to get tattooed was another huge obstacle in a profession which normally does not permit such alternatives. I wonder if he realized how he was narrowing his chances to get future engagements/ bookings with companies worldwide.Thankfully his decision became his trademark as a free thinker and leader of change in an ultra conservative, elite system.

Hi, Julia, The documentary is on in Zurich at Arthouse Cinema. 'Dancer' is more of a studio film than a movie. That's probably why it is only played in very special cinemas. NOR MAJIDAH MOHAMED LOP same. I've heard his aiming to break down barriers within companies and dancers. Because there's so much restrictions that a dancer can or cannot do.
