Biodiesel Production- This lecture explains about the production of biodiesel using plant vegitable oil and animal fats.
What Is Biodiesel?
Biodiesel is an alternative fuel similar to conventional or ‘fossil’ diesel. Biodiesel can be produced from straight vegetable oil, animal oil/fats, tallow and waste cooking oil. The process used to convert these oils to Biodiesel is called transesterification.

MeoH is used for transesterification.. If KoH /NaoH is used as catalyst ; then saponification can occur followed by long washing process... If it is replaced by solid catalyst; then saponification can be avoided...

creative writer Thanks for pointed out this. This is what the current industry is using. Saponification which occur due to strong alkaline was added. This will produce large amount of soap which brings down the percentage of biodiesel. Hence, we often use MeOH instead of KOH or NaOH. However, something I would like to add on, which is the pretreatment for the raw material. Impurities should be removed from the crude oil and FFA should be bring down to certain percentage before transesterification can be proceed. One more very important point which is the explosive issue.

55° to 60°C The pros : cheap, clean, makes the engine lubricated, same autonomy Cons : Start may be difficult in colder temps, not the same viscosity than regular diesel so it can be not avalaible for some vehicles, mainly DPF vehicles. quite time consuming, it needs setup and work if you want to make your own fuel

does India have the technology to manufacture Bio diesel from Municipal sledge waste ? if yes only than this sector has the potential to grow & be a profitable venture. as this technology is already running successfully in US & Australia.. relying on agriculture waste & Used Oil is never going to work due to high price of raw material & continuous availability. Municipal sledge is a very low cost raw material for Bio diesel .
