Or... did his eminence from the war years simply highlight a chapter in history that juxtaposes his later success? If not for WW2, perhaps the Churchill/Gallipoli connection would only be the stuff of trivia buffs and historic scholars and the name Churchill would be an historic obscurity. Not many military leaders achieve fame for high-profile blunders. Some may even argue that Gallipoli wasn't necessarily a tactical blunder if you consider it was a huge risk made in desperation to alleviate the gridlock of the western front. But there is certainly no arguing that where it was a monumental botch, was that of an Empire's arrogance in its cost in human life.

My favorite, the last line of the Fight them on the Beaches speech: "... our Empire beyond the seas, armed and guarded by the British Fleet, would carry on the struggle, until, in God’s good time, the New World, with all its power and might, steps forth to the rescue and the liberation of the old." The Man had a way with words.

@nikesback holland is another word people (incorrectly) use to describe the netherlands, so what he basically said was “the netherlands, belgium and the netherlands”. i think he meant to say “luxembourg, belgium and the netherlands”.

I think the view of his mother put forward is not quite right. His ability to go where he wanted during his early military service was due to her pulling strings for him. If he had not been able to report from Cuba during the Spanish American War he would have most certainly not have been chosen to write in South Africa.
@NJStroebel5 жыл бұрын
Growing up in South Africa, I had no idea he had ever been here. In 2016, I was driving between my current town and my home town - a route I had driven often since childhood. I had recently started geocaching and there was one near the road, so I decided to stop. I was absolutely flabbergasted to find that it was at the site where Winston Churchill had been captured! (There's a monument to the soldiers who died in the attack.) I couldn't believe that I had driven past this piece of railway so many times in my life, not knowing that a big historical event happened right there. It just makes me wonder how many other cool things I have missed in my travels. Thanks for the interesting video!

Churchill has made many mistakes in his life. But he was indispensable in defeating the Nazis. There was nobody else that could have inspired his fellow Englishman in face of the total destruction of their home. He implanted an incredible victorious spirit, that kept them going past the darkest hours. I will be forever thankful to Churchill, not matter what else he did. Signed, a German.

I see a lot of people in the comments defending Churchill saying the forced starvation of four million people wasn't his fault, which I find especially interesting considering his actions weren't dissimilar to those of Joseph Stalin. Yet Stalin is universally hated (rightfully so) and Churchill is universally loved. The defense that he fought the Nazis and therefore he is good doesn't really work considering the Soviets did far more to stop the Nazis. The Soviets lost 27 million people stopping Hitler and pushed all the way to Berlin despite fighting the best the Germans had to offer.
@markharrison25446 жыл бұрын
The Soviets started the war by allying with Hitler to invade Poland in 1939.
@xertophilios36956 жыл бұрын
Talk about the Great Purge and how Stalin stupidly sent millions of men to die, be it POWs, political prisoners, innocent civillians. Russia lost these people because of some paranoid Georgian who thought it would be funny to massacre a large number of talented officers, who could have cut the large number of troops lost in the Eastern Front. Boy, you guys sure love honoring horrible dictators and shittalking the heroes of the past.

As an American, I am VERY Pro-British. So, to simply my opinion I say this; by today’s PC standards, it appalls people that Churchill wasn’t all loving and respectful of the Indians, or the American Indians, etc, etc. However, all these people today that attack him forget that back in his time, many of his views were shared by the people as well. It was the way things were then. But I’m going to say this.....what kind of world would it have been if not for Churchill at the helm of Britain in 1940? How different would the geopolitical makeup of Europe, or the world, be if Britain had fallen in 1940?!
