Ness was never going to get to Sweeney. To this day that family is very powerful in Cleveland with a long line of judges and politicians. The famous "law man" broke a LOT of laws and even if he'd gotten Sweeney to confess it would've been inadmissible. Not to mention, he didn't do all that much about organized crime in Cleveland. Up until the 1970s this town was run by mobsters and the gang wars had more car bombs in Cleveland than in Beirut at the time. Ness also turned into a raging alcoholic and there's a lovely beer that has his name from the Great Lakes Brewing Company. Ness thought he was tough because he broke Chicago but Cleveland ended up breaking Ness.

Thank You Simon for that great video. I live in the U.S. and have never heard of this case. I'm sure the killer had to have some sense of anatomy, though you could just buy a book on the subject. I don't think serials actually would take the time to do such a thing. No, I believe he or she knew about anatomy by learning and doing such as surgeries on cadavers. To think the first victims found were the killers first attempts at cutting up a corpse is ridiculous. It makes me wonder why police refused to believe these murders were done by one individual? Its not like this would of been the first case of its kind. If they informed the public earlier, maybe some of the murders could of been avoided. Hum, many more questions, so few answers. Anyway, thank you Simon for shedding some light on an old unsolved murder case, well done. ❤Arlene

I'm not sure cutting off the head, arms, and legs, takes any great amount of knowledge. Steely nerves perhaps, but not any special knowledge of anatomy. I'm not trying to be cute, I'm just saying... The real mystery of this case, is where the killer dismembered his victims. It's doubtful he just did it in a field some place under cover of darkness, though that's not impossible. At home in a bathtub? In one of the box cars of the trains always nearby to where the victims were found? One modern theory is that he operated out of one of the abandoned breweries in the area, a place I don't think investigators at the time even considered.

A long time back, I recall one writer speculating on a connection to Elizabeth Short’s murder 9 years after the last body was found in Cleveland. Seems unlikely, given that all the bodies in Cleveland are found headless and decapitation was about the only indignity Elizabeth Short was spared. But it does provide a stepping stone through several dismemberment murders of mid-20th century America and makes for an intriguing read.
@chubby_cheesecake_cheeks2 жыл бұрын
I also read of that but it does seem far fetched as it doesn’t have any similarities with the cases of the Cleveland Torso Murders.
@jesperandersen62012 жыл бұрын
The PC game The Black Dahlia, does this connection. Tough the game is only very loosly inspired by these murders, the intro is the Boys finding the body on the bank in Cleveland And the name of the game is the nickname of Elisabeth Short. It's an old game now, but I remember how thrilling it was playing it then 🙂

Fact is that Ness and his team were sure that Sweeney was the murderer for some good reasons, but without enough evidence cause he got a free jail card cause of his cousin congressman. Still after he got locked into a psychiatry the murders stopped instantly. So politics just destroyed Ness' career and life while he most likely solved the case.

Francis Sweeney was 100% the killer. Sad how he was never brought to justice.
@tysonthomas60294 жыл бұрын
My opinion is yes, I believe Sweeney was the butcher. Always wonder why he stopped, and I believe because Ness and the police were on to him so that’s why Sweeney stopped, or why the butcher stopped!! Obviously jail, he died or moved! But I think they were in to him and suspected him so therefore he stopped!
@philiptucker75902 жыл бұрын
@@tysonthomas6029 He had to stop because he knew if he killed 1 or 2 more Victims he’d be caught for sure….He was being heavily watched and surveyed by multiple people. He probably got his rocks off and quenched his urges by taking out his urges on animals or going hunting, etc… sadly 😞

@@tysonthomas6029 Sweeney was committed to a hospital shortly after being interoggated, where he would remain (in a hospital, not any specific one) for the rest of his life.
@williamanthony90902 жыл бұрын
@@ReverendLeRoux I believe the hospital you're talking about was in Sandusky, and Sweeney could come and go as he pleased. The detective who worked the longest on the case never believed Sweeney was the guy. Neither do I. I think Sweeney was a head case who got a great deal of joy out of toying with Ness. Nor does Sweeney fit the profile of what we know today to be the characteristics of most serial killers. I wish it was Sweeney. At least then I wouldn't have the sick feeling the butcher got away with his murderous spree.
