@borisdorofeev56023 жыл бұрын
@@Gbari7 influence of the media goes both ways, to show the defendant as innocent or guilty is wrong. Unbiased juries can't have preconceived notions about a person showing them in a positive or negative light. A fair trial is neutral and from there the defense and prosecution can call witnesses, present evidence, Etc. The media shouldn't be involved at any point, especially to attempt to sway public opinion. Just like the court of law should remain neutral so should the media. But neither can live up to that expectation, that's why I detest both.
@louthinator3 жыл бұрын
this became real relevant recently with the derek chauvin/george floyd case with the media completely misrepresenting the defence and using their bias are trying to push the narrative that unless chauvin is declared guilty then the trial is wrong and riots will ensue effectively threatening the court. The movie The Fugitive was shot in and near the town of Golconda, Illinois, which happened to be my mother's home town. (Pay close attention: Tommy Lee Jones even mentions the town name as he's barking orders to his team.) She knew the family whose home the filmmakers rented to use as "HQ" for the U.S. Marshals. The family was 1) shocked at how much the crew remade their home, and 2) even more shocked when they put everything back exactly as it was before they arrived. They didn't even leave a keepsake behind. As a town, Golconda is a place where time has stood still. This has been on purpose; the townspeople want to keep the place as it was over a hundred years ago. My mother went back for a visit some 50 years after she had left as a teenager, and was shocked at how everything was still exactly. the. same. She walked into the General Store and could have found any item in the store blindfolded, because nothing had moved.

She was only caught because of a bowl of soup.

Actually that's kind of contraintuitive. Typically liars forge their lies very well and meticulously. So if everything makes perfect sense, there is very good chance it's fake. If you have super stressed event, of course you would have your memories extremely mangled.

@@PetrSojnek Great point. Also, Sheppard had a head injury (medically attested to have been real, according to other coverage of this story I've seen). If a person woke in the middle of the night to an emergency situation, got knocked on the head at least once (twice, by Sheppard's account) in the first few minutes after waking, then had the shock and trauma of a brutally murdered partner in front of them when their head cleared, and DIDN'T have a fragmented, fuzzy account of events, that would be incredibly suspicious.

Dr. Sam Sheppard after his retrial became a professional wrestler. The hold that he came up with was known as "The Mandible Claw". It was years later used by Mick "Mankind" Foley, Bray "The Fiend" Wyatt (Windham Rotunda), and Sue Yung (Vannarah Rigs). "Truth is stranger than fiction."

Between his conduct investigating the Torso Murders and his role in railroading Dr. Sheppard, former Cuyahoga County Coroner Dr. Sam Gerber left a very dark legacy in Cleveland, Ohio; that should be far more deeply looked into. Unfortunately, his successors and their circles of power in law enforcement and Cleveland politics have a vested interest in preventing such a reckoning, even to this day.
@michaelpalmieri73354 жыл бұрын
I know that Dr. Gerber was the coroner in the Cleveland Torso Murders in the 1930s. That, in my opinion, is probably how he became so corrupt, that he resorted to railroading into prison a man (Sam Sheppard) whose family he had a grudge against. After all, at the time of the Torso Murders, Cleveland was beset by a wave of crime, graft, and corruption that nearly matched what went on in Chicago during the 1920s, the days of Prohibition and the speakeasies. In fact, the city fathers of Cleveland even brought in Eliot Ness, the former head of the "Untouchables," to become the town's Chief Of Public Safety. His efforts helped to clamp down on the Cleveland racketeers in such a way, that eventually, Cleveland became "the safest big city in the United States." By the way, Ness also worked on the Torso case. The point is, who's to say that some of that Cleveland corruption didn't rub off on Dr. Gerber? It happens even to the best people, you know.
@dsnodgrass48434 жыл бұрын
@@michaelpalmieri7335 Gerber's corruption in the conventional financial sense, I can't speak to, but he had specific political allegiances and had a taste for public importance and self-aggrandizement that in many cases tainted the objectivity of his work, and made him culpable in the destruction of both Sam Sheppard and Frank Dolezal. There are probably others, too; now lost to time and the willful amnesia of the powerful. Ness, btw, was a failure in Cleveland; ill-suited to the job and more concerned with his public image than anything real. His fall was inevitable, and eventually fatal.

OK, Osteopathic physicians receive the same medical education as MDs.. They have the same residencies as MDs. And practice ALL specialties, including surgery, as MDs. The only difference is that Osteopaths are trained in the practice of Osteopathy which includes body adjustments much like Chiropractors, although the majority rarely practice it. I know this because I am an RN who worked this Osteopaths for 40 years. I can tell you that their knowledge of osteopathy came in handy when on a tough work day I could get one to adjust my neck and relieve some tension. :}
@stephanieden43 жыл бұрын
Everything in your comment is correct. But there’s another major difference between MD’s and DO’s. MD’s are trained to just treat the symptoms of a patient, while DO’s are trained to treat the underlying cause of the symptoms. It’s a more investigative field. My cousin is a DO and West Virginia has an esteemed osteopathy medical school. She doesn’t like to do manipulations, even though she’s very good at it. The difference in strategies is obvious in cases like my elderly stepfather, who’s being hospitalized for the second time for dehydration due to diarrhea. They’re just pumping him with fluids, and giving him meds. But no one is trying to figure out why he has diarrhea. It came on suddenly last week and hasn’t stopped. They think it’s food poisoning but it should have cleared up. A DO would be trying to figure out what’s causing it, but no one is.

@@stephanieden4 During this case in the 50s I remember reading about MDs being envious of D.O.s. The Sheppards were supposedly threatening the established Pill Pusher MDs and that didn't sit well with them! The RESULTS speak for themselves! The whole Sheppard family was destroyed because of this case! So much for any competition!
