Auguste Comte (1798-1857) was a French philosopher and sociologist who is widely regarded as the father of sociology and positivism. Born in Montpellier, France, Comte was a brilliant mathematician and scientist who later turned to philosophy and sociology. He developed a social doctrine based on scientific principles and coined the term "sociology" to describe the study of society. Comte's major work, the six-volume "Course of Positive Philosophy," divided sociology into two main fields: social statics (the study of forces holding society together) and social dynamics (the study of causes of social change). He also proposed the Law of Three Stages, which posits that society progresses through theological, metaphysical, and positive stages. Despite personal struggles and tragedies, Comte's influential ideas have shaped the development of sociology and social philosophy, leaving a lasting legacy in the social sciences.
