So many of us think of suffering and why to me, why to my child, why to my loved ones. Many think we deserved it. Suffering never helped me in considering and believing in a punishing God for my sins. No I believe in the 'healing' in that grace and the wonder that is to come. Thank you to that person who showed his/her spirit to us in Auschwitz. Eleonore is a lovely speaker.

This was exceptional. Professor Stump only came across my radar this afternoon as I was catching up on some Pints with Aquinas podcasts. After hearing her on the podcasts, the subject being on suffering, I went in search of more of her material. This interview was so worth watching and I am next going to purchase Wandering In Darkness. Thank you so much Eleonore Stump and thank you CCT for this interview.

Mrs. Stump is just great. I am a Hindu living in India. Am a great fan of hers. Her ideas match much of our Vedanta, except the philosophy of karma which the Christians do not acknowledge.

The biggest problem in Christian theology is 'Why is there suffering in the world?' If they accept the theory of karma and rebirth this problem goes away in a second.

Theodicy is, in my opinion, the most difficult of all subjects for philosophers and theologians to deal with. Professor Stump handles the subject beautifully. I wish to emphasize my last statement by revealing that I strongly disagree with her particular religious foundation but again state that she deals with theodicy beautifully and she crosses many sectarian divides. I have ordered her book, "Wandering in Darkness" and anxiously await its arrival.

Everytime you listen to her you learn some new beautiful idea. I do have one criticism though. Somewhere she speaks about "stupid character formation", but the point is rather about soul formation, or soul making. She rightly points out that if a world with evils in it takes something valuable from you it must give you back something greater, and the greater thing is you yourself. There is the objection that sometimes evils break a person, and indeed we know that evil begets evil, but that objection can be answered.

I love this interviewer. I am convinced these videos would be seen more if the “alg*r*thm” was fair. Leaks of anti Christian opinion from the techies.

He created you all so that he can test who is good and who is not and he is the best judge... suffering will happen always. that is the test

I’m sorry, but as beautiful as this otherwise is, it is just silly for a Christian to take on this whole issue without regard to the eternal.

@@stanleyharlan7290 I mean that it’s silly to discuss how it could be that God loves us and allows us to suffer in this life, without ever once mentioning eternal life. After ten billion years of joy, one might finally recognize the trials lasting a few decades that shaped his soul were worth it. But without bringing that up, it is not a very complete perspective on whats happening.
