If your filter goes on TOP of your aquarium then use plastic media because they are lighter. But if your filter goes at the BOTTOM of your aquarium then use anything. Ceramic filter must be used on the cleaner water stage because they get clogged with muck easily while plastic media don't care because they don't get clogged. Don't hesitate to use plastic bio media because most of the bacteria lives in the sponge so they live anywhere! lol!

For submerged media.... lava rock outperforms, can be broken into the size you need, it will last you forever, it will support anerobic bacteria and it is a FRACTION of the cost of big name filter medias. Big name filter medias are the biggest waste of money in the hobby !
