That works even better in Dutch, as spoor is the Dutch word for track. Doubly appropriate, I'd say.

That's scary, because I used to travel daily between Morden and Tottenham Court Road in 1956. When I did my National Service in the RAF in 1957-58, our Station Routine Orders regularly carried invitations to go to Porton Down to be 'injected with a cold virus'! Payment was made for the period spent there. However, the word had it that other dark things were being injected instead and my compatriots never went near the place! How wise, it would seem.

I was brought up in Wiltshire in the 1960s and my parents were in the Civil Defence. It was an odd time with UFOs over Warminster and lots of comings and goings. Mum and Dad said little but I did a strange number of Chemistry Sets for my birthdays and was asked to get up for my paper round at five in the morning in all weathers all before school . Oh Those Blue Remembered Hills

Yes... And in Australia, we were blessed with British Atomic Bomb testing out in the desert of South Australia. Only problem was it wasn't "Uninhabited" after all... And even many official "Participants" were simply guinea pigs who suffered as a consequence. 😢

I don't think it's right to imply that Nigeria was chosen for experimentation because of the race of its indigenous population. Africa's a violent, lawless place and corporations and foreign governments can get away with that sort of stuff there (well, Pfizer didn't), I think that's almost worse. P.S. There's what could be classed as genocide occurring in Nigeria right now, and it's not white people doing it.

No chips here chap. I just think that a greed for money, power and a lack of accountability is usually a more powerful motivator than racial prejudice. It's a damning indictment on the current climate that I even feel the need to point out that I find both disgusting.

In the late 1950s one of my Grandfathers went Blind, the other died of respiratory problems "in the smog", both used the line frequently, I wonder if the event was a contributory factor?

Impossible to say but dying of respiratory problems in the smogs of 1950s London was in no way unusual. Smog isn't the fog you see today: it's a mixture of fog and smoke and it would hang around for days at a time. It was basically like breathing dense smoke.
@crossleydd423 жыл бұрын
@@beeble2003 Yes, I used to have to walk home in it as the bus timetables went haywire in the smogs. It definitely had the choking effect and I was a healthy 15 year old at the time!

@@beeble2003 and coal dust! (Even when it’s from eg a diesel engine’s particulates..) Lovely stuff. Paper masks can help a little with that (or at least you can see them going black and replace for clean ones) but of course no one really wore them back then. (Even today in lots of wood mills or metal shops they don’t wear masks around the wood/metal dust.) As you probably know, people would have thoroughly blackened mucus from it, far worse than any smoker might get. It’s quite sad that some people don’t really appreciate what clean air regs have brought us and want to get rid of it all.

In 1958, Porton Down released something (we weren't told what) and Met Offices around the country were required to operate a monitoring device to measure the amount of said 'something' that had reached that location.

Bloody hell !!!! I didn't know about this. I knew of the tests in Scotland as I have/had friends up in the west of Scotland. One of which lived in Achgarve, part of which overlooks Gruinard island. His father remembered the tests going on. The local fishermen at the time were told (and chased off) not to fish anywhere between the coast at Achgarve and Mungasdale but were never told why. There was a vague story of someone actually "sneaking" onto the island a couple of years after tests. Like in a classic horror novel, he wasn't ever seen again. Thanks for this video Jago. Makes us more aware just how deceitful the British military are.

Hmm.. I rode the Tube across London twice a day, five days a week, throughout '62, '63, and '64. I am sure I caught my fair dose of germs during that time, but it never occured to me that any doses were unfairly placed there for me and fellow passengers to catch.

Is it volunteers or “volunteers”?
@JagoHazzard4 жыл бұрын
Apparently they were actual volunteers (they were paid for participating), but it was kept from them exactly what was being tested. I suspect if the servicemen were informed of what was actually being done, the pay might not have been enough.
@duganwarn70933 жыл бұрын
Medical research volunteers are often paid expenses for the inconvenience, I believe. It’s not 1,000,000 miles from giving a kidney for money. “For the common good”.

Some of the subjects were National Servicemen, i.e. conscripts, and some were told they were taking part in research on the common cold. There was a separate establishment for common cold research at Harvard Hospital in that part of England: did it provide cover for chemical warfare too? The CIA's MKultra programme experimented on covert administration of LSD and other psychotropics to civilians. The British psychiatrist most concerned with that was Dr William Sargant of St Thomas's Hospital, a media doctor who also worked with MI5 and Porton Down.
@beeble20033 жыл бұрын
@@faithlesshound5621 Some of the subjects were conscripts but their participation in those experiments was voluntary. They were lied to, and the consent they gave was not informed consent, and that is absolutely wrong. But they weren't forced to participate in the experiments.

The scientists at Porton played a very significant part in unraveling the case of the "Salisbury Poisonings". I do wonder if the current COVID-19 pandemic is actually the result of an experiment that went terribly wrong. I also wonder if we will ever know for sure.
@planespeaking3 жыл бұрын
They did, yes and No COVID is not a biological weapon, don't be stupid.
@beeble20033 жыл бұрын
No, the SARS-CoV-2 virus was not part of a biological warfare programme. Engineered viruses contain parts of this and parts of that, whereas SARS-CoV-2 doesn't. And the virus has been studied in great detail by many, many universities around the world so we don't just have to take the world of bioweapons labs on this. SARS-CoV-2 would be a total failure as a biological weapon. For a bioweapon, you want something that has a much higher fatality rate, so the disease outbreak kills a lot of people in one area but rapidly dies out. You don't want something that will cause a global pandemic that kills tens or hundreds of thousands of your own civilians.

Thanks for a very interesting video. I think you might be feeding conspiracy theorist but that's OK, they need a new twist. I did think the the racist claim was a little sensationalist and glib. Nigeria as a member of the Commonwealth would likely have volunteered (at Govt Level) to be compensated for these tests in a large open area. The attitude of both govts is open to question but must be judged by the standards of the day. The already commented nuclear tests in Australia fall under the same heading. Canada was testing against soldiers in general (not targetted) dispersals in the 60s and is still the leading NATO country for chemical weapons defence. Britain was carrying out open range firings of tank battle groups in Libya until 1970, without even checking to see if the were people forward of the guns - it was an open range. Don't even start asking what the US were doing!!! My point is that you need to look at these activities in the light of there time - just as you do when presenting your railway histories.
