In this video, Biology Professor (Twitter: @DrWhitneyHolden) discusses the basics of understanding several important human fungal pathogens and the diseases they cause, including Candida albicans, Pneumocystis jiroveci, Histoplasma capsulatum, Blastomyces dermatitidis, Coccidioides immitis, and dermatophytes. In addition, reasons why many fungi are good for humans are also discussed, along with a brief mention of fungal pathogens of plants and amphibians. Great for MCAT Biology Review!

I have read that there are microbes in the soil which are beneficial to humans and it can be good to touch soil with our bare skin. Do you believe that to be true or is it too risky? Should we always wear gloves and shoes? Is it healthy for children to play in the dirt for developing healthy immune systems?

Yes, very healthy to touch soil and play in the dirt! It’s good to get muddy, as long as the mud/dirt/soil isn’t contaminated by feces, pollutants, or something else dangerous.

Hii ....anybody knows about fungal resistance of transgenic planta??
@BiologyProfessor
@BiologyProfessor 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, plants can be genetically modified to express genes that confer resistance to certain fungal pathogens. For example... www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/15947906/

Unfortunately, it makes me less confident in the material when you use the word "endemic" incorrectly. If its found in more than one location, by definition it cannot be endemic.
@BiologyProfessor
@BiologyProfessor 7 жыл бұрын
You are very much incorrect. According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, run by the National Institute of Health: "Endemic refers to the constant presence and/or usual prevalence of a disease or infectious agent in a population within a geographic area." www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMHT0025844/ In other words, endemic refers to a continual presence of a pathogen in any given area, not in only one area. Many diseases can be endemic to multiple locations. Here is another example: www.cdc.gov/travel-static/yellowbook/2014/map_3-10.pdf This map from the CDC specifically shows dozens of countries where malaria is ENDEMIC.
