this is the last video of the "return to chernobyl" series - but i still have a few surprises for you folks! for once, in this video... but also in the next video, which will be spectroscopy... but not only gamma spectroscopy this time! further on, after all words are said and all stories are told, i'll also have a more hands-on surprise for you guys...!

we had to leave in a hurry, and i was stupid enough not to think of packing a few grains of sand. believe it or not. i still get angry at myself for forgetting that. or maybe it's just destiny, the zone's way to say "you must come visit me again! and again! and again!"... the zone never gives everything at once...

some levels inside are so high, they can give you a fatal dose within ~30 minutes. you can find many areas with readings of Sv/h in the sarcophagus. however, outside of the reactor, it's quite save to be, maximum mSv/h readings, you can be there for a while with no trouble.

of course, i'd love to see the inside of the chernobyl sarcophagus! i'd refuse to go in without radiation detectors, but with them, i'll be able to see and hear dose levels, so i'd consider it safe, as i'd know what i am doing. going without radiation detectors would be like crossing a busy eight-lane road while being deaf and blind, though, so that'd be highly risky due to areas with a dozen Sv/h to be expected in there.

the protective suit only protects from too much dust etc. contaminating you, and the mask prevents you from inhaling / ingesting dust particles. it does not at all protect from external gamma radiation. near the elephant's foot, if staying too long, i'd still die due to the intense gamma radiation dose, as my protective gear is not at all a radiation shield. as a sidenote, i dont think its possible to wear enough lead shielding to survive near the elephant's foot for a long time (too heavy).

PC-3 is prostate cancer cell lines used for prostate cancer research. Also B2O (boron oxide) is used as a catalyst in the conversion and synthesis of organic compounds. Seems like they were doing cancer research before the explosion, then in the days after the explosion they used the building for testing radioactive samples.

Chernobyl never exploded, it DID in fact melt down, but it was a graphite moderated reactor and thus couldn’t explode. Graphite reactors melt down while pressurized water reactors explode (though the explosion is not nuclear as some propaganda films would show it, just the water pressure getting too high from boiling too much, as a result of too much heat)

Scorch mark What about the containment building?
@zenthrosrion9147
@zenthrosrion9147 5 жыл бұрын
The containment building of a nuclear reactor is specifically designed to withstand reactor water based explosions. It is meant to withstand far worse in fact, in the eighties the US did testing where they sent a 200 mph jet on a track towards a solid block of the concrete used to contain the reactors. The plane vaporized on impact and only the wing tips survived as the wingspan was too large for the block. Funnily enough, although reactor containment buildings have been designed and tested for pwr’s since the beginning, reactor sites like Fukushima happened to not use them, on multiple reactors, during a test that the crew failed to do proper procedure, with a power generator system open to breach by a convienent tsunami. It’s almost as if they wanted Fukushima to happen, but of course that is conspiracy theory territory.

Scorch mark the reactor was built poorly and unstable at low power. The graphite tipped control rods allowed the fission reaction to spiral out of control, and the hydrogen gas build up was so strong that it blew the top off. And hydrogen gas being extremely explosive, it cause the second explosion only a few seconds later which sealed the fate of chernobyl.

The only chemicals I could make out in the video were Potassium Chromate, EDTA, and Barium Oxide. Not sure what the Barium Oxide would be used for. Potassium Chromate could be used as an indicator for chlorides (perhaps they use chlorides in the preparation process and need to eliminate them, I think I saw some silver compounds there which are part of the Chloride test). I think more likely though is that it's used to precipitate out heavy elements from solutions that they make so as to filter them out from the rest of the solution that would contain certain impurities, or it could be used as an oxidising agent in either the preparation of solutions. It can oxidise metals, perhaps the preparation process involved oxidising something in solution, or it could be used in preparing organic ligands. I know that when you're purifying plutonium one of the steps involves making an organic solution of plutonium that can be filtered out from the aqueous phase. The EDTA is almost certainly used as a chelating agent, assisting in getting the metals into solution in the first place. In short, the chemicals were all used to purify the metals. I'm guessing in the absence of enrichment equipment they were either content with mere chemical separation, or they knew that the compounds once extracted would be isotopically pure. As you said in the description, it's probably a plutonium lab, and the chemicals were most likely used in the extraction and purification of plutonium.

jformaldehydem I like your idea. When a fuel rod is pulled, chemistry run on it can show the efficiency of the reactor. The Pu-239/240 ratios are pretty important in plutonium production. I know the US keeps records of the ratios of the ratios that various reactors make, literally, "This looks like the September 1968 run in Savannah River Reactor #2." -- Dave

smoke detectors sometimes show the same "burns" inside, yes - however, please see the next video in the series. i did alpha spectroscopy of these samples, and they're clearly alpha source discs for laboratory standards and / or to analyze substances. they're NOT the smoke detector discs that oppose the sources. i found mixed isotopes of plutonium, including weapon's grade Pu-239, in those discs. that's NOT a smoke detector source at all.

So it's either spent plutonium (highly unlikely) or actually contaminated sand and lead from the reactor. you're correct. :) it's a very typical spectroscopy lab. the filters, the dish i picked up from below, and many of the chemicals and beakers are used in the process of refining a sample for alpha spectroscopy, which is then deposited (usually by electrolysis) on a disc of metal (varying types of metals may be used, it depends on what you're looking for, and how - for some methods, it's even necessary to use platinum).

I really enjoy your videos, bionerd23. I was very concerned to see you digging in that radioactive sand, and the amount of contamination left on the respirator. I visited the zone in September 2016 and found it to be fascinating. My tour guide kept telling us to stay quiet inside Pripyat buildings, as entry is officially forbidden. Yet, there are many modern videos from inside buildings. We visited the reactor 5/6 building and I was concerned by the lack of respirators for the group. It did not appear to be dusty, but you never know. My group climbed the DUGA one day after entry to it was forbidden, and we did get caught. Tour guide was angry with us for not climbing fast enough. There were lots of phone calls made (in Ukrainian) and eventually we left the DUGA accompanied by a smiling tour guide and guard. I suspect a bribe was paid somewhere along the line...

Over 500,000 Russian soldiers, miners, and reservists passed through Chernobyl during the clean-up phase. Many received dosages over 3,000 Roentgens (an outdated unit of measure). Natural "background" radiation worldwide is *91 millionths of ONE Roentgen*. For comparison, one chest X-ray is approximately 0.002281 Roentgen! Nearly all of the people receiving that huge of a dose have long since passed away due to either direct exposure to ionizing radiation (within days/weeks) or of cancer (within a few years). They paid a huge price to save Russia (and the entire European continent) from exposure to massive doses of radiation due to the imminent secondary explosion which was, very luckily, *just barely* averted thanks to these brave and patriotic young men. People fail to understand how close mankind came to global catastrophe in the days following the Chernobyl explosion. It has affected the entire world's cancer rate--and the Chernobyl site will continue to be deadly for what basically amounts to eternity. The scariest part? The concrete tomb that encases all of that deadly radiation is falling apart and Ukraine/Belarus have no money with which to repair it. It's designed life is but 30 years and, well, you do the math...

Your series on Chernobyl has been amazing and eye opening for me. It's been 30 years, yet there continues to be this kind of radiation in the area. I had known it was bad, but never really understood the impact before watching this and your 2015 series. It looks like at one point in the video the radiation even causes a strobing effect. Crazy. Out of curiosity, do you happen to know if anyone goes near the Elephant's Foot? I can imagine it would still, to this day, be too dangerous even for workers in protective gear to be around it for more than a couple minutes.

Yes it's actually fine. She'd have to spend hours rolling around in a hotspot to get a dose high enough to increase cancer risk. Radiation is dangerous, but nowhere near as dangerous as a lot of people have been led to believe. You'd probably be exposed to more radiation flying from the US to Ukraine than you'd receive spending a few hours touring Chernobyl.

"clean up"? we just dump the protective gear in another contaminated area, preferably an old storage bin. yeah, it's littering in the zone, but it's still better than taking it out of the zone. at least i dont throw empty cans etc. around like other people do (who go there and consume beer etc.).
