Very interesting! I love the look of the pneumatic muscles but it does seem like the restricted ROM is a limiting factor to the designs functionality but all in all dope project! Would be awesome to explore different ways of augmented strength enhancement! Also good discussion at the end of the video addressing the pros and cons can’t wait to see what you guys come up with for a future exo suit 😱

Thanks! I'd like to mess around with my original prototypes again -- I think the way I built them I actually had more retraction (40-50%) which makes them significantly more useful for an exo build =)

A LOOOOONG time ago (1980's), there was a company working on artificial muscles, but instead of mechanical or pneumatic or hydraulic they used photo-reactive material. What happened is that when this material was exposed to light it contracted exactly like a muscle. I followed the project for a while, but it failed because they couldn't get a fiber-optic switching system good enough. I've always thought it should be re-attempted as fiber-optic switches have come a LONG way. You would basically have to recreate the human nervous system, but the system would have the benefit of not being slow and clunky like the suit demonstrated here.

With defense spending and allocation, something like this can very easily be upgraded. So, no worries guys, you made do with what you have - kudos for that. And... this kind of an external arm would need a support structure connecting to the ground and taking the pressure of the rest of the body I.e., an Exoskeleton in short. But all in all, good job guys!
@traveledart5372
@traveledart5372 Жыл бұрын
If you make some kind of leg exoskeleton, it could be more effective as it is larger meaning the suit can too, and the leg is already strong. It could also be directly connected to something on the back, with weights on the front to balance.

Damn, wish I found this video sooner because I used these actuators in my master's thesis to build a prosthetic limb for transtibial amputees. You guys did a great job but these muscles can be way more powerful than what you showed if you vary things like length, bladder diameter, and wall thickness. I was using much smaller actuators and I was able to achieve comparable strength to your larger actuators. I was also able to get much more of a contraction by messing with the parameters I mentioned above. The most difficult part of these actuators is how you secure the ends (I think you found that out the hard way) and as part of my thesis we came up with a clever way to weave the actuator at the ends to increase its durability. I highly encourage you guys to revisit this topic because I definitely think you're only scratching the surface with these actuators. I'd be willing to answer any questions you guys have or try to point you in the right direction.

I know nothing of these actuators but instead of using 3 large actuators like they did, how would it fare to use a lot of thinner actuators to better represent the fibers that make up natural muscle? They would be weaker by themselves but say they used ones that were half the diameter, they could fit twice as many and it wouldn't stick out as far from the arm.
@paveldrexler1972
@paveldrexler1972 3 жыл бұрын
@@mountieman18 bulging would be problematic with multiple small actuators. You cannot group them too close and that air intake has to stay fixed. It is different with fiber muscles where you have sinew conections that can work in broader angles than fixed intake. This aproach (multiple small actuators) can be used with polymer muscle fibers but those things are expensive :)
@sementhrower420
@sementhrower420 3 жыл бұрын
Did you also use a woven stainless steel sleeve for the outer layer? Did you zero in on a specific optimal diameter for the bladder? When you say wall thickness, are you referring to the thickness of the sleeving or the thickness of the bladder? Share some specifics, por favor, I'd love to tinker with this at my workshop a bit as well :)

When the muscles broke i felt so smug because i had been saying it out loud when seeing the end product. "This is risky, it could be exactly like EVERY scifi book about exo-skeles and mech suits i have ever read. It breaks someones arm or spine." Which almost happened! The first prototype suit or armor always kills the first wearer in scifi books. Glad that didn´t happen here. I kinda guessed nothing would happen because then it wouldn´t have been here on KZbin. But it is scary to imagine what damage that preasure could do it something snapped and your arm basically got pulled in any direction.

This was really cool. I was wondering though. They mentioned the inflatable tube for the muscle can expand a bit, what if the outer steel covering was a wider circumference to start with? Sure you might only be able to hold 1-2 tubes on each side due to space, but youd get a couple more inches of lift. And instead of the muscle ends being connected next to each other, have them more in a circular bind like how actual muscles are? And then just account for inflation space.

Cheers lads. I'm an Austrian mechanical engineer, motorcycle mechanic and sparetime drawer. A lil' idea o' me: Look up the battle slasher of one piece film Z for a good idea to unload the force a bit to the rest of the body.... The characters name if needed is Zephyr. Anyways, instead on a pneumatic muscle, which contract too less.... How about a pneumatic engine at the bearing or a gear in between of it.

15:51 Haha I know what that feels like. I was once building a compressed air cannon for a science project. It was actually pretty powerful. We could throw a golf ball very far. Anyway, as we were testing it one of the first times (without awareness it was going to be that effective) I spotted an air leak in one of the connections of the tubes we had. I got close and tried to pull them together, but it exploded and I became deaf for 20 seconds. One of the best experiences of my life.

18:05 the motion of lifting is a full body motion when he lifted the tool cart for example it would also put strain on his legs and back as you can see from his foot stance and how he was sort of hunched over. The device takes the stress of his bicep but ideally you would require a full body of this with an exo skeleton to move more weight safely. This is really good start though I’m not criticising at all.
