To my knowledge, Makuta as he is shown in his titan form in Legends of Metru Nui is meant to be the movie version of Ultimate Dume. It did take me a while to process that Ultimate Dume was Makuta, but it made sense since Makuta took on the form of Turaga Dume throughout the movie and he gained his titan form from fusing Nivawk, Nidhiki, and Krehka into his body, and the Ultimate Dume model itself is a combiner model of all three of those sets. I have a custom model of Makuta in his Matoran form made as well as the original Makuta set, though I have him displayed with the special edition mask since I think it fits him better. I also did revamps of Takuta Nuva and Ultimate Dume. For Takuta Nuva, I gave him gold armor, and a custom Mask of Light and Shadow I got from Shapeways, which is meant to have him reflect off of his movie version. My revamp to Ultimate Dume just swaps out a lot of the blue and green parts for red and black parts to reflect the movie, I gave him different style of wings, and I gave him two silver hands instead of just one and a hand made-up of Turaga Dume's limbs. I also managed to build a model of the alternate Teridax from the Melting Universe, though I did need to glue some pieces in order to keep it together as the hands just kept popping out otherwise.

9:40 In my opinion the desicion to change makuta to the master of shadow rather than the master of destruction guys pretty well into the story. Like you said, destruction is a natural thing, but Makuta (terridax) is shown to be deeply unnatural and working against the order of things. He corrupts the animals, he infects and posseses Matanuis’ body, he’s the missshaspen and jaged rock, he acts out of line even from the members of his spiecies, activeley betraing them to get what he wants. The inclusion of the tribe and brotherhood of makuta in my opionion seperates terridax even further as a pure force of evil since he shows No feelings of kinship towards any of his kind. I believe the choice of changing his role works really well with all the other aspects and symbollism of his character. Yes, this is a rant of a sleep deprived soul at 3:00 a.m.

the only true Makuta, got him and Takanuva for christmas as a child and one of the few figures I could restore completely. Your reviews are great, I made a spareparts version of Icarax with parts from Vampra and the golden Kanohi Krakahn

8:12 I would say he comes from the fusion parallel version of Spherus Magna since in this universe, the Makutas were created to protect the toas and matorans and have white shining armors

I like the idea of Makuta being an eldritdh god much better. That could be where they got the idea for Tren Krom, heck it would make sense for him to refer to Mata Nui as brother considering Tren Krom was the predessessor to The Great Spirit.

100% on the soft armor damage being mentioned. I've since replaced mine, and we only lightly played with Makuta back in the day. And yes, always THE Makuta 👍

did you know that the krakhan (however it is spelled) actually has a five hole variant? It is really rare as it appeared in between the six hole mask and the four hole mask. This mask is also the reason the four hole one exists, as one of the nubs on the mold that made the holes had worn off. So to keep the symmetry they made it have four holes.

I did obtain this set, though not until July of 2007, four years after its initial release. In addition to the Rahkshi capsule lids and Nuva armor in gunmetal, this is one of only two sets to have Technic 120-millimeter "groove tubes" in "cool silver", along with the concurrently-released "Supersonic RC" (8366) from the "Drome Racers" theme. The Nuva chest armor in gunmetal also came in the Kikanalo (in 8811) the following year, and the Nuva shoulder armor in that color appeared in a "Parts tub" (6620) in May of 2006. Makuta was also one of the last sets to have the "RoboRider heads" in that color, and was the only non-Drome Racers set to have them. He also marks the last appearance of the Toa Mata eye stock in transparent medium blue.

I remember when I first learned that there were more than just 1 Makuta, my mind was blown ! Still this is the best Makuta set we ever got ! (At least in my opinion) But I mean, it's the only TRUE Makuta to be fair.

Technically you're right, after all he did murder all of the other makuta at some point with the only makuta that still exist in the story now being Makuta Miserix and an alternate universe version of Makuta Teridax.

I've always found it funny when people talk about how they dislike the Brotherhood of Makuta being introduced, despite him saying "Come, join my *brothers* and me" to Vakama towards the end of LoMN. Given the fact that the Great Spirit Robot and the Spherus Magna system were foreshadowed as far back as MNOG, I wouldn't be surprised if that was deliberately foreshadowing the Brotherhood with that line.

It has to do with a retcon and a sense of betrayal. Short version is the introduction arc Mata Nui built a very strong narrative and when that got changed, people felt their investment in the story was betrayed. This was much worse for the fans that consumed more Bionicle media as more got retconed. It was also the second or third time he was retconed. Sorry if this got rambly, it was supposed to be the short version. Thank you for your time.

Just because it was always planned doesn’t make it good. The Brotherhood of Makuta is such an amazing concept that was fumbled terribly. I think the best way to have the brotherhood exist, and to keep Makuta as his 2001-03 mysterious self, they could have done this. Makuta, feeling left out because the matoran don’t worship him, ends up finding an unnamed species, so uncared for and under appreciated, he takes them under his rule, and gives them the name of Makuta, as an honor bestowed upon them, and gives them all special abilities. That’s just my idea tho, obvious room for improvement even here.

Essentially, it was meant to be a secret group of matoran all from around Mata Nui (the island) signified by their black masks. Ahkmou, the matoran selling infected Koli balls (Kolhii is the stick using version, Koli is simply kicking the ball without using any other tools) is the only remnant of the cult, seen in the Mata Nui online game. In the second game, he still keeps the black mask, since that was just a detail he had at the time that didn’t change until his 2004 set release. Ahkmou being a two faced traitor in the story is only there due to the original, mostly scrapped cult of Makuta concept.

I like to think of the Makuta in the movie and the toy as two manifestations of the real Makuta. Like, the Eldrazi in Magic the Gathering.

I always really liked the early years for Makuta, being this primeval force of nature, destruction and shadow. He very much got into the idea of "evil" being a fundamental part of life, so long as there was conflict and destruction, there was Makuta. Even when they turned him into a set and gave him a more physical bad guy form, I still really like his set and his design, he cuts an imposing figure and a great shadowy counterpart to Takanuva. Him eventually just being retconned into one of many bad guys always did such a disservice to his early appearances.

I would like to think the Makuta we see is merely just one of many avatars the true Makuta can send down to the island of Mata Nui. That way, we can still keep the original idea of Makuta being an abstract form while still having a somewhat physical form that is not his true one per se.

You could say Makuta's first body is just another avatar that he possesses and that teridax specifically is controlled by the primal Makuta of destruction.

Honestly, I would’ve preferred if his matoran form was the form we got to see in the movie because it’s honestly much creepier much more eerie to see a tiny little guy like the guys they protect be what represents true evil

I think they should have kept him abstract, the toy was disappointing to me as a kid compared to the towering Rahi and the more streamlined exo toa. His gimmick also makes him super floppy IMO. Gave us some cool parts though, that's for sure

I do feel like the whole "antidermis cloud" thing helps offset the underwhelmingly sized set depiction thing, and I actually do quite like the character design of the set itself, but I 100% concede with the long contested change of the Teridax thing being a bad move. Makuta was a much more sinister threat as an equal to Mata Nui than some asshole who started a coup against some dragon guy. The Brotherhood could have worked just find relatively unscathed if they kept to the cult route, and given characters like Gorast you'd think that was the original intention to begin with. I don't care about the whole "brother in arms" semantics, the fact he and Mata Nui **aren't** actually mano y mano brothers really makes Makut- sorry "Teridax" more wimpy compared to what he was originally set out to be. Now, they definitely made the best out of this retcon, no doubt he's still a threatening well written villain, and the whole "I make Rahi" thing does add some more to the jealousy aspect of his character, but I wish they met somewhere more in the middle from what we got.
