Bionicle was my introduction to mechanical design and although the characters themselves weren't mechs, they still hold up as some of the best designs for fictional creatures ever. Ironically, I now collect Gundam model kits, which are similar to Bionicle (buildable action figure), but based on Japanese Anime shows and grown up because, again, model kit.

12:13 - The reason why the protagonist of Mask of Light is a Matoran instead of one of the Toa is because Takua (the blue & red Matoran) is the main protagonist of a lot of the Bionicle media of the time such as the Mata Nui Online flash game, some of the GBA games, and the web animations. Not to mention, the movie is about Takua becoming the 7th Toa, so it makes sense that he would be the focus.

My God, the nostalgia! These were probably the last great toys before the era of advanced gaming on PCs, consoles and smartphones. If you still have any, don't get rid of them, ever! Very few things in life can equal with the amazing feeling you got as a kid, when looking at the "Bionicle" section in a supermarket. Some even now, as adults, report having "the Bionicle dream". The more I think of it, the 2000s seem like a paradise lost...

Oh man, I could talk literally hours or even days about my experience with this franchise. Those early days prior to the Metru Nui arc were just my jam at that age. I dropped out in 2004 then returned in 2009 and caught up on the story at that point, just as the franchise was wrapping up. Even met one of my longtime internet friends while browsing early KZbin for archived Bionicle clips. It's one of my favourite franchises ever and has defined my own creative outlets. Long live the Great Spirit.

This was absolutely the best thing ive watched all week- what a nostalgia trip- I did NOT expect youd talk about Robo Riders and the other guys- I literally have them all and was just cleaning out my attic thinking id get rid of them because I never played with them or held their memories as fondly as I did with the first few lines of Bionicle. I did remember bringing them everywhere and asking for them from all my family for christmas and birthdays- wow- You totally captured the essence of my childhood and the collecting that I started. I bought the green Bionicle pretty much from every line up till the very very end when in my opinion as a fan, they became just too unsatisfying and even brittle. The last few lines have plastic joints that snapped on their second disassembly- something the originals never failed by despite numerous trips down the staircase and off of furniture!! Love Lego as an adult- this video was really a time capsule.

As a kid born 1993 I was the perfect age to appreciate LEGO's launch of Bionicle. I received the very first Bionicle comic from my monthly LEGO magazine subscription (2001, I think), and was instantly obsessed with getting a Toa of my own. I remember hoping to get Lewa, but settling for Kopaka as my first, since he was what was available in store shelves when mom took me looking. I still have portions of my collection. I played the 2003 video game (there was also a gameboy advance version not mentioned here; you could play as the OG Toa), and can quote the Mask of Light movie to this day lol ("unity, duty, destiny!") I drifted once the shift from Bohrok/Rakshi to Metro Nui happened. Will always have found memories of Bionicle shepherding me through childhood. Thanks for the nostalgia trip!

I even wrote to LEGO and was able to get the happy meal toys I missed mailed to my house. I stopped when the redesigns of the main characters came out - my mom was annoyed that I was going into high school and asking for LEGO for Christmas / Birthdays plus my little brother and sister were born in 2001 and 2002 and started getting into my stuff so my LEGO toys got packed away.
