Something I don't see people talk about is how toothless reacted to Astrid and Stoick. With Astrid, during the flight scene he was being rough up until Astrid said she's sorry. Instantly he starts flying calmly and actually showing her the beautiful of flying. With Stoick, Toothless was holding Hiccup in his wings safely while Stoick believed he was dead, but when Stoick said he was sorry then Toothless revealed Hiccup to him.

It was almost like Toothless saw his and Hiccup’s relationship as more important than anyone else’s. He genuinely believed he was the best option to protect Hiccup at any time and any disrespect to Hiccup was disrespect to him and vice versa. You gotta love the relationship those two had man, they were there for each other no matter why

I feel like this is because when Hiccup helped toothless he said sorry and built him his wings. That's when they started to really get along. So now in order for people who do wrong by either of them, they have to say sorry first.

Nobody talks about this, but I absolutely love how STRANGE Hiccups mother is. She has been immersed in the world of the dragons for so long that she is acting like one at some points, when she’s intrigued by something, the way she talks and her body language. One of my favorite characters for sure. Also, while being more open minded than Stoic in the particulars of the Viking culture, it is so interesting that she is just as close minded in her particular set of beliefes. They are polar opposites, and neither of them willing to find a way across the ideological devide between them.

i mean, hiccup has always been a real G, he first shot down a dragon during an attack,a helped and befriended one of the the most rumored to be dangerous dragons, then subsequently learned almost everything he needed to know about dragons by himself, through just observing toothless's behaviour, then taught everyone how to ride a dragon. If anything, he became a millionaire without a startup.

I don't know if anyone else has said this, but Grimmel is also a parallel to hiccup, and kind of represents what hiccup could've been if he had killed Toothless in the first film. Grimmel is smart, and technically savvy, and Hiccup easily could've fulfilled that role if he didn't realize his true self.

The first two films are great, the third one can be either great or controversial depending on if you consider the Dreamwork Dragons tv series canon, in part because the tv series expanded on the personalities of the other vikings so much that when the third movie uses them more for comedy, it can be rather aggravating that they are used in such one-note manners. Regardless, HTTYD is still a series that I enjoy, with movies that I can look back on fondly.
@BoolianKazooka

The thing is that the third movie does make subtle nods to the show. These can be dismissed pretty easily if you’re keen on having the show be non-canon though.

My main issue is that the takeaway message kinda contradicts the other two? 1 said "challenge stereotypes about others and use your brain to be brave." 2 said "people can change but some choose not too and that doesn't mean you can't keep trying on others." Despite the happy ending, I feel like 3's moral is "if people don't accept those who are ostracized, hide them until it's acceptable"

Lightfuries are the original Nightfuries. NFs are a subspecies where they evolved to live outside the hidden world while LFs stayed. That’s why they have camouflage to hide in the dark while LF are white to reflect light to become invisible, which is why it’s harder for Toothless because he already has camouflage and dark scales that can’t reflect light as well

not just the perfect trilogy but also the perfected animated series "school of dragons" and "race to the edge". They basically took more depth showing the adventures with almost half the dragons shown in the series and how hiccup and astrid relationship developed. heck, even the 2 games adapted from them is nice. one where you play with a specific character raising dragons, fighting, racing, doing events and farming and the other is basically a city building game with dragons.

How To Train Your Dragon is a trilogy about a boy begging for, getting, raising, owning, growing with, growing apart from, rejoining, and finally leaving a dog. Toothless is the pet that Hiccup wants (or needs) to grow as a person, and is forced at the end to deal with the mortality of. That's why the trilogy sticks with so many people. It reflects many peoples experiences with getting a pet, growing up with that pet, and then that pet passing on in their early adulthood

The Red Death(Dragon from the first movie) is the “queen” of dragons much like a wasp queen or queen bee type character where as the Alpha from Httyd 2 is much more like the Wolf pack type leader of dragons and has much more control over the dragons in a more natural way.
@pogpogpog7507
@pogpogpog7507 Жыл бұрын
there are quite a few queens throughout the franchise (eg. the fireworm queen, she's so cool) but they don't really exhibit the same behaviour. there's also the green death (red death's sister, i believe) in one of the mobile games who is pretty friendly from my understanding. i think the red death was just a nasty dragon lol
@adynholden9546
@adynholden9546 Жыл бұрын
@@pogpogpog7507 perhaps. I just say “Queen” of dragons as a catch all for the bee like behavior she seems to cause dragons to exhibit. I doubt that was the natural way dragons were but due to her large size and tendency to kill those she deemed lesser I would think she’s the “Wicked Queen” of dragons in proper canon. Though that could be a weird way of looking at it

One of my favorite parts of HTTYD is that it rewards you for watching the shows, it’s not entirely necessary, but it rewards you with great moments and callbacks. I was going through some really difficult stuff when i discovered the first movie, but the idea of freedom through flying helped me through it; this fantastical world of dragons gave me an escape. Then, the second movie introduced the idea of identity to me; not having to be one specific person - « you have the heart of a chief and the soul of a dragon. »Then the third movie gave me permission to let go. I got through the hard stuff, I had my escape, now it’s time to move on and focus on myself and my life. I adore this franchise so much, it made such an incredible impact on my life. I’m so happy to see people acknowledging it’s greatness :)

this series has brought me to tears several times. i'm not even referring to what happens during the second and third movies (no spoilers. if you know you know) i just mean the existence of something so beautiful. every now and then i still listen to the soundtrack in full, when i was younger it literally used to bring me to tears because of how mighty and 'epic' (word ruined by the internet) the songs sounded, they were so impactful, even when the violins became quiet and subtle it still touched my heart. this franchise is such a huge part of my childhood (even the third movie still feels nostalgic even though it only came out a couple years ago) and it always will be. it sparked my love for mystical, streamlined, and mighty creatures- it's a huge reason as to why i'm still very much interested in palaeontology. i want to give everyone involved in this franchise a huge kiss. except for whoever is responsible for the nine realms, fuck that dogshit show, it unravels bits of the lore so unnecessarily and it's not even done right.. side note: while the light fury is cute, it doesn't make sense to me that night furies and light furies are separate things yet are only one gender- it would be fine if their offspring would only be one or the other depending on gender, but the night lights have both colours? maybe i've got it wrong? would love if someone corrected me! sorry for the ramble i'm neurodivergent and obsessed with nostalgia.

I think the light fury thing could be similar to like zebras and quaggas. Like they are very similar species, can interbreed but look distinct. We see multiple light furies in the background so it seems like almost a subspecies of this type of dragon.

I just like that his leg didn't magically grow back, they allowed him to miss a leg, and they show him adapting to his missing limb instead of reveling in his misfortune, it sets a good example for children that they can still do what they want within their limitations. It reminds me of a farmer that lost both arms from a young age and started using his feet for everything even while he was in the hospital, he just lifted the blanket up with his foot because he was cold. There's videos of him even working on tractors with his feet.

A lot of the things that happen in the second film are seen in the Netflix series, HTTYD Race to the Edge. Throughout the seasons it shows the interesting adventures Hiccup and the crew go on, as well as showing the creation of the contraptions Hiccup uses in the second film. Biggest examples being the flight suit and fire blade. On top of other references, towards the end of either season 5 or 6 (I sorta forgot) but it shows a scene/flashback of Draco threatening that he’ll be back, ITS A SUPER COOL SHOW IM BEGGING OF YOU TO WATCH IT

I love this summary of the trilogy. Love your takes on what happens and love your tier list of the movies. The third is def 50/50. Villain is amazing, the progression of character between Hiccup and Toothless is great, but every "side" character kind of just pulls it down. The "Main character" building is amazing in this trilogy, from Stoic, Hiccup, Toothless, Astrid and Gobber. But the "lesser" characters were so one-dimensional it brought the series down a chunk. A detail I don't see talked about at all is when in the third movie Hiccup is saying goodbye to Toothless, the last thing he does is remove his hand from Toothless's head while he looks away. A direct callback to the first one where he first puts his hand Toothless's head while looking away, marking the start of their bonding. In the first one it was done to symbolize their beginning while in the third one, when it was done in reverse, it marked their end.

I think the reason why grimmel is more intimidating than drago is because a) grimmels accomplishments are more impressive, nearly wiping out an entire species of dragon especially night furies as powerful as they are is more impressive than abusing a bewilderbeast from birth to control through fear to control other dragons through the bewilderbeast and b) drago is the shouting big buff raw power villain, grimmel is the smart, confident, slender type villain and the smarter the villain the more intimidating they tend to be, especially considering grimmels intentions

i remember watching the second one in the theatres with my family (we’re all big fans of the franchise) my dad actually teared up a bit when stoic dyed. i’ve always felt that he probably relates to hiccup and his relationship with his father so it probably hit harder than expected.

i remember when i finally caught up to the third movie, i had almost cried when hiccup had to let go of toothless because throughout the movies, it was a huge part of my childhood and it was like letting go of your childhood. everyone started out young and bonding's were growing stronger as the years go by. so i understand how hard it was for hiccup to finally let go of a close friend like toothless because they've done so much together and basically changed each other's lives. it's beautiful but so painful.

The reason the second movie will always be my favorite, is it's the movie that relates the most to the books. It's based on a series that ended being a 12 book series. The series was meant for kids but was drastically different from the movie, like first page of the first book and you'll see the difference. In short basically they were already training dragons but they treated them likes slaves rather than allies/pets/friends. The main conflict was to train dragons the book of "How to Train your Dragon" already existed in the universe and it had 1 instruction: Yell at it. So having a villain who embodied that aspect from the books was a breathe of fresh air that really brought the series back to it's roots. For anyone wondering what other similarities the two have the answer is simple: NEXT TO NONE. To list a few differences for ppl who are interested: the dragon's spoke and only Hiccup knew how to speak their language, Toothless was a common and garden dragon (basically the same as the terrors, the really small ones), the whole series revolved around a chosen one and the end of the world kind of theme, Hiccup had a separate dragon specifically for riding, toothless and fishlegs were both social outcasts and friends, a lot of the characters were mixed around such as Astrid, Ruff and Tuff were different characters all together. I could go on

What’s great to me is when you include in a watch through the tv shows and mini movies, it’s not only a good story and journey for the characters, it’s a world I became obsessed with as they came out, I watched the shows, studied the dragons, I wanted to immerse myself in the series, I even played School Of Dragons the kid focused MMO.

The second one was my favorite, even though it has timing issues. The story progression in it it phenomenal, it just has awkward pauses in it that I feel were only put in there because the voice acting didn't line up with the music, but they were so pressed for time that they couldn't fix it. Also they don't have the whole limited shots and noise confusion in the second and third movies. The show actually does that part far better.

Not to pull an "achtualleey 🤓" moment but toothless' love interest from the third film is actually an entirely different species. You can see others in the scene where they go to the hidden world. That's also why their offsprings are hybrids Also the alpha dragon lore is explored and explained in other media iirc. There's several shows, several comics, junior novels, there's games but they're half canon most of the time. So much lore I love dearly

I don't understand honestly why so many people don't really like these movies for the longest time these were my favorite movies like the first movie I watched every single night for a whole summer (my family didn't appreciate that as much as I did) not only is a good movie but it's a good movie that has really good disability rep like how they did hiccup losing a leg it wasn't like a huge over dramatic scene it was just a moment of realization just really well done and the latest movie him modifying his leg while just using to get something off the top shelf or joking about it just so well done

They didn't just survive the Red Death because of how Toothless showed Hiccup that dragons aren't fireproof on the inside; it was a combination of other observations and things he was told. Like, Gobber says to destroy a dragon's wings, so Hiccup has Toothless shoot the Red Death's wings. Hiccup also learned from loosing the cheat sheet that dragons have a tough time "braking" when falling from a great height, so what does he do? Takes the Red Death up into the stratosphere. All these factors combine to act as failsafes for each other. If they couldn't get it to fly high enough, they made sure the wings were inoperable. If they had the height but the wings were fine, they caused the distraction of igniting the fire inside it, where it's not fire proof. It's actually brilliant that Hiccup wins that fight using a combination of what Gobber said (destroy the wings), what Toothless taught him (not fireproof on the inside) and his own observation (dragons can't brake well at certain speeds/heights). He's taking inspiration from both sides of the coin, the viking and the dragon... and throwing in a little Hiccup flair to take the win.

Honestly, the second and third movies were good, but the original How to Train Your Dragon is a true masterpiece. Unlike the second and third movies in the series (and the majority of films in the genre), the original How to Train Your Dragon is so good that it doesn’t need a villain to create artificial conflict. The film is a coming of age story of a boy who gains acceptance by his father and community by being boldly and unapologetically himself, saving both his people and the dragons by daring to see the kindness in a seemingly violent creature. The conflict is internal, within Hiccup himself and his relationship with his father and community, and that’s what makes it so powerful and empathetic. Add to this the unconventional bond that Hiccup and Toothless form throughout the movie, and stunning flight scenes with beautiful visuals and a soundtrack that makes you feel like you truly are soaring through the skies on the back of a dragon, and you have a perfect movie.
