I think the real furture of proshetics is not mechanical limbs, but artificial grown ones from the persons own cells (so the body doesn't reject it).
@seaoc6578 Жыл бұрын
Yes and no. Bionic ones are much closer, as we can't fully replicate cell growth to the level needed to make that. Plus, the problem with skin is its truly not that great. It serves its purpose but something like carbon fiber is both more durable and lighter than that of an average arm. We just need to connect it to nerve endings and it'll function just like a normal limb

I could see scientists trying to connect bionic limbs to the mind so there would be better reaction timing ,strength control , and feeling of course .

Actually in many ways it was more profetic for it's time. And $30,000 is what mine will cost. But they were getting into stuff that was scientific theory at best and outright science fiction then. Sixties

It's only expensive because people will pay anything to get their health back. If only health care were non profit there would be so much less suffering in the world
@kathryncook7193 Жыл бұрын
It's also expensive because of the technology being used.

Actually working on that with subdermal chips, tiny, that can link to the legs with tiny wires, perhaps Bluetooth in the future. Also may be able to use chips to repair Alzheimers.

Anyone know what kind of discipline specializes in designing & producing these kind of things, biomedical? Electrical engineering?
@CardGamesTV13 жыл бұрын
Mostly engineering

It's Biomedical engineering, even better if it's offered as an undergraduate specialty.
@stevenculver72283 жыл бұрын
In general, an engineering degree is needed for this kind of research, but there are other disciples that are part of the boarder field. Depending on what you want to do with bionics, you can have a mechanical, electrical, biomedical, or robotics engineering degree. But collaboration can cross boundaries to the medical side with prosthetist-scientists, physician-scientists, and surgeons. The field is also rapidly expanding into artificial intelligence.

A team or even a whole company working on a project like this. Not just one person. Designers, Doctors, Software Engineers, Hardware Engineers... There also also Team Managers, Project Owners, Software Tester, Hardware Testers, people who do marketing for it... You can be part of a project like this from a wide range of different specializations. Go ahead!

Someone in the comment section said that humans are creating organs better that what we are born with? Our organs are so personal to each individual that a person after an organ transplant will take on the personality of their organ donors and can even have that person's memories YIKES that is so cool.

That surgery for implanting prosthetics to the bone looks f***ing painful
@ANONIE473 жыл бұрын
It's a surgical procedure, carried out under a general anaesthetic 🙂 . Post-op painkillers would also be used. After healing, the artificial limb is click on, click off.

@krknfmkr8919 Жыл бұрын
If you're in the US, there are some companies, some of the more advanced ones can have tiny chips under the skin, connected to sensors in the limb that give your nerves immediate feed back.
@krknfmkr8919 Жыл бұрын
My sympathies, I only lost one. Mine will have a microprocessor that "learns" my stride. It has pressure sensors that give the ankle and knee joints feedback. I can't get it until the swelling goes down, above knee amputation. 2-3 months
@caswellfolk9697 Жыл бұрын
Is sounds messed up but growing human bodies with no brain (so there’s no conscious) then using the parts is the most realistic approach I can think of. Then somehow altering our cells to accept the limbs.
