I thought about this a couple of times and arrived to a conclusion. Recently science is advancing so fast that we wake up one day and can literally be astonished by what innovation is bringing. NEVER in history we could have that, in fact, all advances in technology where very incremental so that we never perceive the 'change'. However, now this is not true anymore. And now each year is going to be full of incredible breakthroughs, they will be so 'futuristic' that we will even call them miracles.

When it comes to pricing technology, there are really two major elements at play. One is how cheaply it can be assembled and at what rate it can be made fully ready for distribution. The second is how much above the production cost it has to be marketed at in order to keep the product profitable. Currently, the arm, and likely many of its components are all likely either the highest end electronic components they could reasonably get their hands on, or components that were built from scratch, or at least very basic elements for specific use in the experiments. Should this technology become the standard, or close to, for prosthetic limbs, you'd see a lot of the components become more standard in their manufacturing, especially ones that are core to the functionality regardless of what specific limb it's being implemented in. At that point, the main thing that would hold price up would be relatively low demand. Now I can't rattle off amputation statistics from the top of my head or really spout, but I feel like it would still be several grand, maybe even cost as much as a car, but it'd be something you could acquire through the use of insurance, a loan, or a combination. Additional production demand for the components could also come from things like maintenance and service kits, possibly the construction of limbs for those who would willing be prosthetized (though I feel like the majority of people who say they would chop their arm off for a robotic one would feel a bit different if they were faced with paperwork and the reality of having it done), as well as possibly for assistance androids or task robots should those technologies have adequate breakthroughs.

I guess it's interesting in a way, but I'm not sure if we are going to be advanced enough in ten years to make prosthetic arms carry implanted weapons for soldiers, and Navy Seals, etc. to use in the military and stuff like that. Its a bit tricky as optic nerves are connecting directly to the brain. Something goes wrong and you are a drooling vegetable. Also connecting an optic nerve to an artifical eye is not really possible with our current technology....if you still have the nerves...otherwise it needs to be replaced and then it is even more complicated.

Now apply this to more automated devices and you have so many applications that can even not involve a human being present at all except to direct a remote machine. I agree. it could be created far cheaper and far more effectively. maybe it would be less fancy, but I dont pay for fancy. our biological bodies work already close to like machines, we simply need to be inspired by nature. tendons in our bodies pull and push, pistons in machine shall pull and push. connect it directly to your flesh, your biological tendons fused with the metal wires. even your feeling can be returned artificially. apply thin plastic surface plates over the metal cover and in between copper leaf with wired connection to an circuit that connects to your nerves, it shall be your translator of electric current. keep replacing until you cannot replace anymore. let the only thing that needs nutrition be your brain, for you can even replace heart and lungs artificially so you no longer need to think about it. the blood only needs to flow between three organs. flesh is weak in all meanings of the word. steel is pure and strong.

I look at this and i start to cry, i have never had a left arm. ive been bullied all my life and i am only 13. i want to be able to fold my arms or to twiddle my thumbs i cant wait for this arm to become a reality I might be able to achieve, but you'll only be lucky enough to be chosen for a project like this. Itll be close to impossible to afford. and then looking at the comments in this video is absolutely ridiculous, because "now its time to cut off my arm" is a terrible thing to say. i wish i had the chance to have an arm.

I did a gripper project that's not even close to something like this. These have wires for tendons, pulleys to increase mechanical advantage, and electro-mechanical brakes to hold the position. The control system is based on a fuzzy controller. The phalanges are underactuated, and the actuators are electrical. Mine was just a basic 2 finger 3 phalanges design, with underactuated 4 bar mechanism to power it. It didn't have any sensors, apart from the pneumatic pressure sensor. It was hard enough, and was a damn simplified version of these underactuated arms shown in the video. The video thing had like 120 sensors, mine had just one 🤣🤣🤣 It would take years to develop one like it.

What I immediately noticed here is how smooth and seamless the movements were. Usually with arms like these, the movements are kind of stiff, detached. But here? The arm acts like a human one, it’s got that smoothness as it moves it’s joints around and I think that’s amazing

To get an idea of what's being done, consider that most of the muscles used to manipulate the hand are located on the forearm. So this is using the principle that the nerves used to interact with the hand are still present further up the arm.

I think they are testing and calibrating, that would not be her final arm, and it is easier to control it in "mirror mode" than to have her right side control an arm to her left side (opposite right).

This is literally not very important at all. Most amputees given these types of prosthetics end up hardly ever using them, or just using a simple arm with only an elbow joint and a hook hand. Our scientific understandings and technology are just not developed enough in this year to make these types of prosthetic more convenient to use than it would be to just not use them.

I imagine the prosthetic arm would just copy the movements of which ever arm it is linked to in your brain. Not sure if it could work independently as if you had three arms, unless you just imagine moving it but not actually move your real arms. I wonder if you could have a telescopic prosthetic arm that lengthens as you imagine reaching out and stretching.

A tail we might have some connection with our coccyx, but I wonder how we would cope with a tentacle or even wheels in replace of legs. Would the notion of running simply make the wheels go fast? Perhaps there could be some sort of interface developed that transferred the human brain wave to the correct corresponding motion (as in running making the wheels go faster).
