I would watch my father play this game when I was in middle school. We both got so into the story that my dad would set up many save files so he could show me cutscenes and audio tapes I might have missed because I had a set bedtime and he would want to keep playing the game while I was asleep. He would replay the save files (maybe replay them on hard difficulty) for me to catch up with the story. I remember him being so excited to show me the plot twist. I know it kept him up late playing but he was so happy to replay it again the next day for my reaction. When it came what to do with the Little sisters, my dad went the evil route to see what would happen and deleted that save file since he only had daughters irl and felt harvesting the little sisters was a deadly sin so I only saw the true good ending.

I just noticed, all three original Shock games use the Medical wing as their first level. It's an especially major fuck you in the original System Shock, because the Medical deck is Shodan's cyborg factory, and is fucking FULL of her lobotomized footsoldiers, not to mention it's where all the crew members who got infected by her mutagen virus were sent when they started showing symptoms, so it's chock full of goddamn mutants too, and at that point in the game you have a lead pipe, a dart gun, and a taser. I think most people don't get into System Shock 1 because, even after you get used to the control scheme, the game has no chill with the opening level and immediately brings the hammer down. Only the worthy may pass.

I have a semi love/hate relationship with this game since I love the setting and the amount of different options you get, but the shooter gameplay is about as soggy as its environment compared to some more polished games of the genre and some of the story moments feel really stupid in hindsight when you think about them. 10/10 I hope everyone plays this game at least once, because there's nothing like unleashing a swarm of bees on your enemies like they just stepped into a mid-summer outdoor barbecue and the family insists that they eat outdoors.
