I played BioShock infinite in 2016 and was amazed by it. Only heard better things about BioShock 1-2. Then finally remastered versions came out and it didn't grab my attention for a while, until 2021, I played both the games like crazy and both of them are just so amazing that it buries BioShock infinite quite literally.

What's best about this game: how it doesn't simply demonize Ryan. You arrive in rapture, he is well over the edge, but all of it is a result both of his fallibility as a human (paranoia, pride and of course greed) and external factors, namely Atlas, an incarnation of everything he hated about the surface. In the end, Ryan became the villain because at first he ignored the obvious problems brewing under the surface (pun intended) and, once they were obvious, as a way to solve them, he convinced himself that his ideals were consistent with a technocatic dictatorship and that abusing basic human rights was a price worth paying to "save his city". Easily the geatest villain in video game history, imo.

The opening to this game is so perfect for a number of reasons. You get an uplifting speech, shilling this city as a utopia of art and culture, of capitalistic progress. Bright neon signs plastered over tall buildings, advertising fine cigars, wine, and plasmids. There are even a few big daddies visible, giving you the sense that the city is still populated. But then you arrive, and that pretense falls apart completely. A man gets gutted, the entrance is lined with abandoned briefcases and protest signs, the metal artwork is rusting and the pipes are buckling, and every resident is warped and hostile. It gives you a sense of comfort and rips that comfort away, all while making you wonder just what happened to this city.

It was definitely not a coincidence that they cast Armin Shimerman who played Quark of Ferenghi in DS9, a race who prized business and profit above all else, to voice Andrew Ryan. I recognised his voice after being a fan of DS9 when I was young. Great casting, not only does it tie in with both characters in terms of their profiles, but the voice acting and delivery by Shimerman is top draw, along with practically all the voice acting in this game.

It isn't presented very well, I think. An objectivist is not inherently a bastard. Mind you Andew Ryan did betray his original Ideals, but if a truly libertarian 'paradise' cannot stop people like him from emergeing, and people like him still emerge in authoritarian governments, maybe there is no way to stop people like him. @FunSize nah don't apologize. When a writer creates a story, they have complete and total control over every single action, development, and event that takes place in said story. Yes, what would happen if an ancap had actually built his own empire. Anarchists, in general, are basically tyrants that evnvy other successful tyrants. Whether that would be the government, the church, or the commune.

BioShock is meant to show how bad objectivism is and why anarcho-capitalism won't work. The capitalist becomes the authoritarian. The game shits on Ayn Rand HARD. Even the name "Andrew Ryan" is a direct reference to her. It's painfully obvious.

One reason why Rapture is under the Atlantic Ocean is because Ryan knew even if it wasn't the city would have been flooded by salty liberal tears.

"I am Common Man. And I'm here to ask the public a question: Is a Man not entitled to the money he earns? 'No...' says the Man in Washington, '...It belongs to me and my friends!' 'No...' says the Man in China, '...It belongs to me and my family!' 'No...' says the Jewish Man, '...It belongs to my entire race!' I REJECTED those answers. Instead, I chose something different. I chose the righteous. I chose..... REBELLION. A cause where the poor don't have to fear the rich. The worker isn't bound by petty pay. Where the Public isn't constrained by corrupt governments. And with your help, it can be your rebellion too."

@@NIHIL_EGOI always find it funny that people think libertarianism ISN'T a liberal or leftist ideology at its core. It enshrines the individual as the smallest functional unit of civilization, whereas conservatism posits that the family is the smallest. This is ultimately the core difference between the two ideologies.
@NIHIL_EGO

@@DerpASherpa117 Whether something is leftist or rightist depends entirely on the societal context it exists imo. For example, classical liberalism may have been leftist circa 1800, but I would argue it's at best centrist in today's world.

@@DerpASherpa117 Aha but how small is a family? That answer can vary from culture to culture, and there's many "family-centric" cultures that have strong leftist movements.
