Someone finally addressed this issue. I earned a gold medal in Pharma and began my PhD in Delhi in 2017. Despite three years of hard work, balancing an industry job, and sacrificing my health fully, my guide forced me to choose between my job or failing. True to his word, I failed and left my PhD with a heavy heart, returning to the industry. My tasks included drinking tea from a flask, sitting in the canteen, and checking exam papers. A PhD in pharma doesn't pay well, with salaries around 4.5 LPA after 2-4 years. Industrial PhDs are essential, but many PhD scholars lose touch with reality. I'm a millennial, not Gen Z. Happy to answer your questions (if any) for this kind of content. Really heart touching good work.

@@tarungupta3590 It really hurts! I have seen these things in many prestigious institutions like IIT/ NIT. Many students leave their course because of these nasty behaviours from supervisor/ guide. In India PhD really sucks whatever the student is boy or girl! Maximum cases it takes 6-7 yrs to complete the course. Funding is another issue. After completion of degree there is no campus placement, job, besides family pressure for taking up responsibility(specially financial!), and pressure for getting married . Besides, the behaviour of maximum supervisor/ guides is so nasty!Due to these things many students leave their degree. Many students are losing their golden period (20-30yrs) of getting decent job and career. It really hurts! I have seen many students opt for distance degree for getting jobs. @biotecnika sir, there was a time when many students opted for honours master's in fundamental subjects, PhD, for zeal or stipend whatever it is. In India, the work culture in labs are very bad, many supervisors are torturing their scholars mentally. I have seen these, many students leave their institution, subject! After getting degree if anyone wants job, then he/she have to oiling their supervisors! Those who are aware of these earlier age, these students opt for distance degree or professional courses, because of pressure of getting jobs in 20-30s. In our state many seats in general/honours degree remain vacant! No one want to honours master's nowadays due to the system. Govt should bring strict guidelines for academic degrees like PhD to complete degrees in 4 yrs and recruitment system should be fair and lucid. Otherwise, in future no one will opt for PhD in India. 🙂

@@suparnasarkar4282 I strongly agree with your insights! I mean one shouldn't be under peer pressure just to persue some good research in the field they're really interested in! The pressure is really nasty and demotivating that we get bound to question ourselves why did we chose this field! And the sad part is this certain scenario kills that curiosity and enthusiasm once we had created for the subject. Phd should be more about new innovations, research, creativity and less about bizarre work ethics of lab, lab politics. Planning to go abroad for phd.

*PhD is a scam not only in India but also in foreign countries.* It’s better to work hard for a year to prepare for government exams rather than dedicating five years to something that is full of stress. A PhD doesn’t even guarantee a permanent asst prof post. First, you have to work on a contractual basis in universities to gain experience. Moreover, even if you receive a decent stipend, you can’t spend that money freely due to the constant fear: "What if I don’t get a permanent job immediately after my PhD?" This marks the beginning of a vicious cycle, where one starts considering a postdoc to improve their chances. I know a teacher who completed his postdoc at IIT Ropar. Currently, he is working as a chemistry faculty member at a NEET coaching institute. Do you think someone with such qualifications is meant for this? This is the harsh reality of pursuing a PhD in India.

In many institutes in India like IIT's, students don't have a choice. First a bunch of students are selected on the basis of exams like GATE, then the students are enrolled in the PhD program without assigning any guide initially. Then students have to do 1 year or 6 months long coursework. After that only they get to choose the guide. And they do not have freedom as each guide can take 1 or 2 students. So students will have to choose 1 anyway from the bunch of these devil supervisors. Also I feel the coursework is a process made by the cunning professors so that the students are stuck in the institute. After 1 year is already gone in the name of coursework, students cannot leave the program to join other institutes or go abroad easily without losing valuable years of their career even if they understand that the professors are crap in research and have no good idea. The system is so flawed that it can break careers of many excellent students and professors are not accountable. I have gone through it myself. Go to any IIT or research institutes in India, you will see the level of frustration and hopelessness that a good student has to go through in PhD.

In many institutes in India like IIT's, the supervisors have such bad behavior. They will take credit quickly for students' achievements, but will put all the blames on the students if anything goes wrong. They are not accountable. Most are jealous lousy craps who do not have the decency to show any respect to the students, from whose works they reap all the benefits for their promotions. Students also don't have choice to make informed decision due to the process of admission adopted in these institutes. Usually students cannot apply directly to a professor's research group. I have seen it in IIT ISM Dhanbad! Where research scholars are becoming more personal assistant rather than a scholar/ student! Maximum Supervisors are so cringe! Even any student wants to do job after MSc, they strongly criticize! They insist the students to do PhD ! Even the supervisors insist to do their personal works like ticket booking, give free coaching to their children, if anyone denies, publication will be withheld or erase the name from author! After these job warranty? No job warranty! If a scholar has link recommendations then he/she can get a simple job in industry or pvt farms! Otherwise they will suffer from unemployment! Even many students are suffering from this! After 33+ the opportunities become lesser than earlier ages! That's why plan B or financial backing is most important! Thesis theft is another issue!

Industry oriented PhD itself needs a separate video. 1) People feel that they get passed over for a promotion. 2) Part time PhD is considered Full time Job + Part time PhD, so there is same expectation of work as before. 3) Opportunity given to pursue PhD is treated as some big favour so spot light awards and employee recognition are reduced. 4) People frequently keep askign how long is left in the PhD, even though you have just started. 5) Some people have notion that people giving time to PhD are distributing their focus and hence they should be not giving 100% to theri job. Job gossips can negatively contribute to employees career. 6) Less time to spare for family and loved ones. Missing functions, Avoiding inviting people to our homes, avoiding taking vactions can all be problematic to the mental health of the PhD candidate. Societal pressure can also be an issue such as pressure to raise kids, attend events with spouse.

This video is surely an important one. PhDs need better mental support from their families and supervisors. It's difficult for a woman scholar to manage both, given the lack of understanding of people. Peer pressure makes things worse...instead of a competitive environment, researchers will thrive better in a collaborative environment. Also, students need to know the ups and downs of the research well before they face it, say in the form of a Master's degree with research or a research component in the Pre-PhD stage. Such knowledge will help them make a mindful decision.

PhD guide must be a person who is a available to guide you and take a review from her/is previous PhD students to know about placements, his funding sources and lab atmosphere etc. 3. India spends 0.6% of GDP in research so most likely you may or may not land a research job even after you have done PhD/postdoc from a foreign institution. Also research jobs are not adequate even in industry. Let me share my story...I also left Phd in physics from IIT Roorkee in first year itself because of the following reasons:- 1-Stipend is too low(37k) , with negligible increase.. 2- No permanent Job after Phd 3-After Phd you have to Do few Postdocs which will last around another 4-5 years .. 4- At this point you are already 35, and now You have to compete to get some decent Assistant professor Job.. 5-In all above cases, I have assumed best case scenario that you have completed phd in 5 year, Got decent post doc position, got good guide and your topic of interest, assistant professor recruitment Is fair ...(All of which hardly happens)... So Even if everything goes well, the question arises.."Is it worth it to work so hard for another 10 year of your life after Msc "?.. So I switched to corporate sector 😊

Suggestion Remove PHd from the clutches of UGC. In India in most cases PHd is a gap filler for women and delivers nothing to the society, though these guys are fully financed by the society. I get surprised what they contribute to us when funded by us. There are HEIs awarding PHd for trivial subjects. In Kerala one guy took PHd on a poem - vailoppillyude vazhakkula ( vailoppilly - late poet in Kerala, and vazhakula- the fruit a plantain produce) What way that effort benefits the society is wondering. At the top it gives a bad impression on University higher education to the student community when they enter for UG. PHd should be awarded after one reach a certain level of understanding the environment say after 50 years of age. Delink it from job. Most of the HEIs are not competent for awarding PHd. Right from knowing the person aptitude passion etc and also on the usage on the product that guy is going to deliver.

Its not just in India where people leaves PhD half way. Its almost common in abroad also.but the problem in abroad is that as time period is less, people will try holding on in even in toxic labs and somehow will complete the PhD and according to some data (from where I saw,I forgot), number of PhD students coming out each year is more than double the amount of job openings and as foreign universities also have some strict rules in the financial funding, the PhD scholars are asked to leave ASAP after they complete PhD and as the job openings is less, they had to take post docs and in most places they may have to take another postdoc in next 2-3 years and they have to continuously move from one place to another and by the time they can settle down, they will be around 37 or more as some some people say the more time you spent in academia more trapped you feel. This is not case for everyone, there are many lucky or privileged people who gets their things done faster. But majority situation is similar and as for people who join PhD for a better career rather than their deep interest in research, these things will become make their life feels like a chakravyooh where they already fell in and can't leave. So its better if you don't choose PhD if you are really not that interested in deep lifelong research.( Even after joining academia according to their wishes this suffering doesn't as they have to focus on grant proposals and other things rather than research). So its not that green on other side also.

The problem with Indian academia especially with PhD and Profs is ego clash. And mostly it happens from the professors side. Professors are always vocal about blaming the student for their incapabilities during their PhD. They always say that it is the students' fault. If a student is unable to bring that research mindset within himself or herself, the profs simply says that he or she is unfit for phd. But if we look on the other side of the coin, is it not also fault of the profs that they are unable to impart that research mindset and the necessary things that a phd student needs. And even after completing phd there is no surety in India that a student can get a relevant industry job. Also I have seen another thing that in tier 1 institutes profs take "pride" over lingering a students phd for more than 5 years and they even provide "justification" for extending their degrees upto 7-8 years, saying that they are producing a good academic for the market. What about the students future then after that? I know many people who have completed phd in 7-8 years and still they are struggling to get a bare minimum job in the industry. Its high time to revive the academic scenarios of our country. Another aspect is that , many students who complete their masters from tier 1 institutes have heard a sentence from their guides which is " Job nhi lgi, aare phd karlo boht scopes hai". Not everyone want to pursue phd after an mtech or msc , they want to get into a full time job. Why this mindset prevails here...I mean why should any guide force any student to join phd where the student wants to pursue a job and settle down. The profa who are saying this they have thier career well settled and getting decent salaries per month , but they have problems with their students earning equal or maybe more than their present salaries. Ego is a big thing which mostly comes into play here. Phd needs dedication, patience, perseverence, tenacity. If someone is really interested for research then he or she can think of pursuing phd, maybe in India or abroad(better) . Other wise there is no point in pursuing phd from India and better to go for a job after masters and build up your necessary skills for that job.

I am working in a scientific organization and in the final years of my PhD. Recently, I was assigned as a technology advisor for a student of my guide. I agree with the observations. However, I would like to add. The students in my university get a handsome stipend of Rs 80K and a residential facility. In spite of that, I felt they were not motivated to work. The reason is that most of the students that join PhD lack any passion for research and a hunger to learn new stuff. Their only objectives is to gain temporary income and them land a job after research, which is not an unreasonable expectation. But research is very difficult if you don't have that hunger in you to learn new things and go ahead and hustle it out. This creates a big challenge for guides as well since the students are not so young and impressionable that you can motivate them to do research. Looking at these students, I myself don't want to become a guide when I complete my PhD.

I am at last year of PhD but I left my first PhD midway. So the basic thing first: 1. Like any other job in India PhD scholars are replacable. Other you are verygood in it or people leaving PhD hurt the name of the guide. If you do not come under either of these you will be under great pressure. 2. If you doing PhD in general line you should compare your fellowship with salary of govt and private college assistant professors only. Because being honest the vacancy for scientists and university professors and high end indutry opening is way lesser than number of students graduated per year. So for majority college professor is the future. 3. Choose guide properly. If is always comfort vs goal and everyone thrive in different environment. If you want to know about guide, ask the students of the guide and also the students under other guides of the same institute. 4. It need sacrifice, if you get fellowship don't try to wrapup PhD fast. The longer PhD need is India is due to inefficiency of sytem and contrain of resources. If you take even 6 years your work weight will be same as 4 year USA PhD. European PhD value greatly depends on institute, they are more concern to finish it in 4 years than the standard. Any question you have, please feel free to ask.

For those confused one i would like to add few points- Those who think i will get more knowledge after doing masters or ph.d. then you are mistaken. The practical knowledge/skillful knowledge is important in every field. You can persue your higher education or ph.d. when you find there is some chance of improvement in your field which comes with experience. Otherwise you have to rely on papers published on various journals like ieee, springers. for your research topic selection.
