This masterpiece touches me personally, just brings on the tears......In the summer of 1976 I sailed out of Long Beach Ca. on a 380 ft.1942 converted Army transport. The first drillship to drill without anchor in the Gulf of Alaska and Bering Sea, The fury of that cold sea forever changed my life. A young man at sea on a fine old ship..THE CALDRILL 1....away from my loved one...75 days at sea,,.then brought the money home in a duffle bag.....Oh, the unforgettable pleasure of dust under my heel.

I consider myself very fortunate to have been able to attend three Stan Rodgers concerts when I was in my late teens and early twenties. He had a presence on stage that only those who got to be there would understand. Have never seen anyone in any genre of music come close since. During intermission he would come out into the lobby and walk around chatting with everyone. He was very humble and always thanking you for taking the time to attend. Imagine.

I saw him multiple times as well, all but once at McCabe's in Santa Monica (which seats 150). He was a force of nature onstage. It's such a shame there are so few videos of him performing. I agree that no one really ever has come close, at least in my experience.

Stan should be known far more widely. I first heard him over 35 years ago. He was killed in a plane crash in 1983. Horrible! But he has left an impressive body of work. All his songs are stories; he has an amazing ability to wrote the thoughts of an entirely different person, from an aging Midwestern farm wife to a sailor dying in a land far away. You can find most of his CD'S on Amazon. They are every single one a treasure. He was a "full of the dickens " kind of gut and great fun. I still miss him terribly.

I like the comment about "Run her fingers through my hair" He wrote his songs as though he was some one else, and, gave his words to them and for them, so that people actually believed he was talking in verse about himself when he was transforming himself, into all of us.

That was Stan's genius. I still can't believe how he did it... he read these old stories, and visualized them so well as to make himself appear on the ship beside ye.

I guess you need not to be Canadian nor live near the sea to fell in love with this music. I'm woman of 50, living 300 km from the nearest sea, having an experience of seafare just by taking sea ferry nothing more. Still I've found Rogers just two weeks ago, and listening now to him in my earphones, sitting at work amongst folk 20 years junior, feeling like on deck of Nightingale.

Well, it’s not the hours of watch-on-watch And it’s not the work that I mind so much Or the long cold miles from my lover’s touch ‘Though for sure she’s far away No stranger, I, to the touch of steel Or the honest fear any man can feel But I long for dust under my heels And a pocket full of pay So I’ll take it from day to day The pack-ice ’round us cracks and groans The old St. Roch, she creaks and moans The icy fog is in my bones And the ache won’t go away Outside I bet it’s warm and fair I could have her fingers in my hair But it’s long, cold miles to her out there So I guess I’ll have to stay And just take it from day to day We’re as far North as I want to come But Larsen’s got us under his thumb And I signed up for the whole damned run I can’t get off half way But when I get back onto the shore I’m going South where it stays warm And there’ll be someone on my arm To help me spend my pay So I’ll take it from day to day

It's one of those songs that sounds like stock humanity. No one ever heard the Riddle by Nik Kershaw for the first time, or Tomorrow Never Comes by Northern Pikes, or 95 by Wideband Network. They're just there, and somebody had the self-awareness to notice and the skill to make them tangible.

Understand he's singing about the voyage of the "St. Roch", the first ship to complete the Northwest Passage from west to east (1049 - 1942) under the command of Captain Henry Larsen. It returned east to west in 1944. Ended up at the Vancouver Maritime Museum, B C.

The RCMP vessel St Roch served as a floating detachment of "Mounties" for 20 years in the high Arctic. My friend Mitch Owens (RIP since 2016) served on board her in the 40's, and her Captain was Henry Larsen, who was my father's boss in the RCMP when my Dad was patrolling by dogsled in the Arctic. I was also fortunate to serve as a police officer in the Arctic on Baffin Island in 2008. But I never realized Stan Rogers had written this song about that famous schooner. What a treasure in music history this one is. The St Roch was the 1st to sail the Northwest Passage from west to east (1940 - 1942) . The 1st to complete the Northwest Passage in one season (1944), also making it the first to use the more northerly, deeper route and to complete the Passage in both directions. The 1st to circumnavigate North America via Panama Canal, survived 12 winters stuck in the Arctic ice for 10 months at a time. The King awarded the prestigious Polar Medal to Henry Larsen and the crew who sailed during the 1944 voyage, and she was declared a National Historic Site in 1962, now in drydock at the Vancouver Maritime Museum. A good full story on the St Roch can be found here... www.canadiangeographic.ca/sites/cgcorp/files/images/web_articles/blog/northwest.pdf .

@@beverlylarsen2353 In 2009 we did a trip through the North West Passage with Adventure Canada . I built a radio-controlled model of the St Roch using the Billings kit as a template and then adapted it for radio control. I launched the boat at Gjoa Haven and a KZbin video was made of the day see kzbin.info/www/bejne/qKOofHuKhNisZqc and the build kzbin.info/www/bejne/kHqYo5WFes13iJo. I gave an onboard presentation about the boat to our fellow adventurers . They wers all fascinated by its history and of course I spoke about your father's crucial role in the impact the St. Roch had on the north . You might enjoy the memories .
