Why we connect the emitters of both?is it not that we get the output from collector point ...be it npn or pnp? Am I missing something?

If both transistors are "off", the circuit has 4 LED's connected in series, 5 volts on one end, ground on the other. The LEDs will light up.

Takes more than 5V for 4 LEDs to light up. That's why I used 4 instead of 2 :)
