Lithium belongs to the drug class: antimanic agents and it is sold under the US brand names:
Lithobid, Eskalith, Eskalith-CR. More than 5.7 million American adults or 2.6 percent of the
population age 18 or older in any given year have bipolar disorder. Lithium is helping some of
this American. It has become one of the first and widely used psychiatric drugs for the
treatment of bipolar disorder in the United States, since its approval in the 1970s. It also has
become one of the most studied psychiatric medications.
Indication:
Lithium is an effective drug for bipolar disorder as its properties help to prevent, as well as
stabilize, manic-depressive mood swings that occur in this psychiatric condition. By controlling
mood disorder, it also reduces the risk of suicide. This is an advantage of lithium that is lacking
in some other drugs. But it is more effective in preventing depression than it is in preventing
mania. However, it needs time to develop and reach its ideal therapeutic level in the body
before it induces any effects. Usually it takes about 1-3 weeks, however, in the case of sudden
or acute bipolar episodes, if lithium hasn’t reached its optimum level in the client’s body, it can
be prescribed along with other medications for effectiveness.
Lithium can also be prescribed for other psychiatric disorders besides bipolar disorder. It can be
useful when other drugs fail in conditions such as schizophrenia, major depression, and certain
psychiatric problems in children.
Mechanism of Action:
Although lithium had been used for more than 50 years in the treatment of bipolar
disorder, its mechanism of action was unknown; until 1998. Scientists didn’t know the cause of
mood swings in bipolar disorder either. A study made in 1998, by a group of researchers from
Wisconsin University shed light on how lithium works and why it is effective. It was concluded
that lithium acts on certain nerve cells in the brain and the receptors of the neurotransmitter
glutamate. Lithium has a dual effect on these receptors, and using this, it helps to regulate the
level of glutamate between cells, preventing it from reaching too high or too low concentrations.
According to the director of this research, Dr. Lowell Hokin, who is also a school
professor of pharmacology at Wisconsin University; too little glutamate between neurons cause
depression, while excessive amounts of glutamate cause mania. But it is also believed that
there are more causes and factors involved in these disorders besides the level of glutamate,
but nevertheless, the study has been very helpful as it has uncovered the fundamental causes
of bipolar disorder.

Lithium has been the best treatment for my moods.. Really glad that i decided to try it. My depression is gone, my impulsiveness and uncritical behaviour is gone, and all the chaos inside my mind has calmed down a lot. And it has not made me like a zombie - i just feel normal again, and like myself.

So if you dont want weight gain you have to be a bit disiplined. Regardless, lithium is the best medication if you are mindful about what you eat.

I have bipolar disorder & take lithium 600mgs each night. I have regular blood tests done at my Gp's surgery every 3 months. This is extremely important to check the levels of lithium in my blood stream. Everybody that takes lithium has regular blood tests done, then they are sent on to their local hospital. The results usually take 5 days to get back to the Gp. I've been taking Lithium & one other stabliser drug called sodium valproate for the past 28 years. These drugs have not only helped my moods but have saved my life. My bipolar disorder started at age of 18years. I wasn't fully diagnosed til my early 30s now I'm 58yrs old. I struggle with my illness on a daily basis yet I know I'd be far worse off if I didn't take my meds. It takes a long time to get the right combination of meds & dosages, years in many cases like myself. I can recommend a good channel on youtube called " Polar Warriors " various video's on bipolar & mood disorders etc... Very informative & helpful. 🍪pocket.

One thing you forgot to mention is that combining antidepressants with lithium can cause a rare, but potentially deadly disease, called Serotonin Syndrome, which is where the serotonin levels in your body rise to a toxic level. I got this from amitryptiline, Zoloft, and Tramadol. My symptoms were: lack of muscle control, diarrhea, severe anxiety, nausea, seizures, and dangerously low blood pressure.

What people don't realize is conditions like Bipolar, Schizophrenia, etc. can be caused by reaction to certain foods. Ever thought about changing the diet? I had a friend of mine who had bipolar disorder. But his bipolar disorder was caused by Dairy and Gluten (Wheat, Rye, Barley, etc.). Corn gluten can also be dangerous as well. When he stopped both, he became a lot better. For example, check youtube video "The Milk Protein Casein and Bipolar Disorder" by Dr. David J. Clark. There is also a youtube video by Dr. David Clark called "Cheese causes seizures" on how seizure was gone after dairy was eliminated.

Word of advice I’ve been on Psych meds for 30 years. Don’t take anything new that you haven’t tried or have been on a very long time. Often if they switch the medications you can actually become worst. Don’t let them juggle your meds! This happened to me they gave me a new medicine and it was terrible for my mind. In fact I know something has changed permanently in my brain for the worst. It can be mind altering even if your off that medication the damage can set in and stay with you.

I say this because I'm currently in an accelerated nursing program and many times I find that learning the theory portion of the program may not necessarily translate into real life situations. I have taken prescribed lithium in the past for Bipolar when some serious life crises eg divorce etc made bipolar worse than normal and it does even out moods but it put me into this stupefied, vegetable state and caused me to gain weight I could not take off despite massive amounts of exercise and strict dieting. Also, I got all these other distressing side effects eg kidney troubles etc. I simply had to find a better way to handle bipolar without medication so I began to experiment with what I ingest, exercise and relaxation therapies, manipulating light and colour and temperatures of my environment, avoid bad social environments eg many workplaces etc and doing activities compatible with the condition eg creativity whilst avoiding bad ones eg monotony and routines which are OK for my down phase but not the up phase. I have to vary how I live to accommodate which phase I am in and this is partly affected by the seasons eg in summer the high sets in and so I need to be cool and still and reduce exposure to bright light and colours, to dampen mania before it gets too bad. Unfortunately, summer is also festive season and normal folk love colour and light then and I do performing arts and they all want to know why I refuse their party invites, won't eat their nice food etc but I put myself on this strict regime to control my disorder and be a responsible mental illness sufferer and it is hard to explain because they do not understand and tell me there is nothing wrong with me but they would soon see there IS, if I stopped my bipolar control regime. My biggest challenge controlling bipolar is dealing with other people who want me to stop my regime and come be normal like them and have fun etc. But I cannot do this. If I take medication I cease to be the person they know and like being with. I just go flat, fat and dull. They just don't understand but I cannot expect them to because they do not have this condition and cannot imagine how it affects moods. They say "We feel sad or happy, too. Snap out of it and help us feel good. Sing, play music for us, tell us interesting things etc. Doing my strict regime is very hard but it is not as bad as taking medication and it gives me a feeling of pride being mentally strong enough to do it and keep these bipolar demons under control. It requires self discipline and is not for all sufferers. If I got really bad, I would take prescribed medication but if I can do without, I do. Some herbs eg hypericum help in the down phase. So do pure strong coffee and pure cocoa. Valerian and alcohol in moderation help dampen the manic phase. Coffee, alcohol and pure cocoa are other useful foods, in moderation. Adequate plain water intake is essential in both phases for stabilising moods. Sugary foods and highly processed foods with many additives cause mood issues in all phases. Some natural foods eg flour are also suspect but I need to study these further.... Everything needs to be regulated to control bipolar. It is a very precarious balancing act that needs readjusting each season or life change. It is not just diet. Everything must work together eg increase exercise in he down phase but stop in the up phase etc. My system involves effort but it does work. So long as I stick to it. It is harder than popping daily pi and regular blood tests but well worth all my effort to stay mentally sane. It also has many other physical health spin off benefits anybody can utilise, even if not mentally I'll. It might even help prevent becoming mentally I'll, even if you copped crap genes that make you a candidate for the Looney bin. You can defeat mental illness. I proved that with my life.

Has anyone been able to get by and not have kidney or thyroid issues on a low dose of Lithium - like 450 mg.? Depression from BPII has been the hardest symptom to deal with and it comes and goes, but when it comes on full force in Spring and Summer, Lithium is the only thing that helps it. I seem to be able to get by on just 450 mg. but I am not young (almost 52) and I am afraid of kidney and thyroid issues if I stay on it long term. Will continue to get things tested. Last time I quit, it was because I was getting some kind of skin irritation on my face. But it didn't take long for the BP to start showing symptoms again and then I found myself in a serious depressive episode. *** I do so much natural stuff for depression - yoga, exercise, sauna, nutrition, meditation, try to stay social, help others, engage in hobbies and work and I am still flattened by clinical depression at some times of the year more than others. Been through years of many medications that did not work or made the BP a lot worse. Lithium is the thing that seems to work and I am kind of pissed about it because it scares me to stay on it long term.

Hi! At around 3:44 you state “...Sodium depletion or severe dehydration...” as a risk factor. You then continue to mention that lithium can cause sodium toxicity. To my knowledge, lithium decreases sodium reabsorption which is consistent with your statement “sodium depletion” or a decrease in the amount of sodium in the body. However, I’m not sure how this results in severe dehydration. Please correct me if I’m wrong, but dehydration corresponds to an excess of sodium in the blood and not enough water. In the case of lithium intake, the amount of sodium is decreased therefore the body must be able to retain water. To add to my point, lithium can cause lithium toxicity, not sodium toxicity.

There is a book "James Greenblatt - Lithium: The Cinderella Story...": (Leader of Walden Behavioral Care, Waltham, Massachusetts, private psychiatric clinic) He says Lithium-Oratat from (2,50) - 5 to 40 mg of elementary Lithium is safe without side effects and works as well as high dosed therapies which are normally used. He uses it since 25 years. Bevor his story began, he looked at Jonathen Wright, MD who worked with it, he also found out the same. // The use out of alternative medicine has higher amounts of lithium: 600 - 1800 mg per day as Lithium- Carbonate which causes side effects. (Greenblatt and Wright are closed to orthomolecular medicine.) // (Maybe this is written in unusual American English because of German translation.)

Was thinking about taking this medication. I have taken many other anti-depressants and this seems to be a common side effect in men. I'm not currently taking anti-depressants, but have taken Cialis on several occasions and it worked for ED. Unfortunately it was extremely expensive without insurance, but that was several years ago. Sorry I couldn't help you more, but I do understand the struggle. Peace

@@ChrisfromGeorgia It is not advisable to take Antidepressants with lithium. They react badly together causing bipolar disorder symptoms to massively increase. Mania is hightend & this can make a person go into a full blown manic episode. My Gp warned me about this some years ago & I also watched a video on you-tube by a professor in psychiatry about it just recently. I would never take any Antidepressants for this reason. I've been taking Lithium 600 mgs at night for the past 28 years. I use Olanzapine 5mgs when my illness reaches a manic state which helps & works for me on a short term basis. Have you watched the channel " Polar Warriors" on you-tube? It very informative & helpful. One guy presents all the video's explains all aspects of bipolar disorder, he has suffered with the illness himself so he has good insight into the illness. Worth a watch 🍪pocket.

He doesn't want the same problem happening with you.

I take lithium carbonate with quetiapine as a bipolar treatment. It has worked for me although it is the only one I have taken. I have to sleep more than 9 nine hours a day. When I go to bed late and have to work early, I stop the treatment and I have enough energy to work and I feel better. My sexuality is a bit complicated, sometimes I have a lot of appetite and sometimes I don't, but I feel like I can control my appetite. I already want to stop the treatment but I would not like to fall ...

This was very informative . I was wondering why it is not safe to use lithium carbonate after the expiry date. Is it simply because of the reduced potency , or is it because the salt starts breaking up and the toxic lithium is not in its stable salt form ? Also is the shelf life 18 months or 5 years, I have been reading some contradictory information online.

Serious medical problems could arise if lithium is discontinued without the assistance of a psychiatrist (tapering down the dosage over time, how long the weaning process will take to get the person off of lithium in a safe way). Because lithium can affect multiple systems and areas of your body, it is quite dangerous to discontinue taking it abruptly. Damage could be done to the kidneys, as well as the thyroid gland, as well as other serious issues.

Good doctors I know and have personally consulted are. 1. Dr. Neelam bhora 2. Dr. Alok Sarin 3. Dr. PS Das. Theyre excellent and highly regarded. Consider reaching out to them. I'm sure they'll be accommodating. You Whites always get better treatment even by our people in our countries! Everyone wants to know yoy and be your friend. Let's take a look at this combination of drugs people labeled bipolar take each day in order to prevent relapses one by one: 1. Lithium, is a very well-known poison which will give you nothing but thyroid problems sooner or later at the time when your immune system weakens when you get older, and beware that this problem would be deadly in conjunction with a heart problem. 2. Valproic acid which is an antiepileptic drug in fact. The ones who have epilepsy can use this drug realatively safely as they get with much lower doses than bipolars. But don't forget that you get this drug in 5000 times higher doses than than epilepsy patients. There's no need to be a psychiatrist or pharmacologist or a physician to guess that sooner or later that would lead to liver or kidney failure in the long run. 3 One of the central nervous system drugs which would definitely lead to health issues such as heart problems and diabetes. 4. Antipsychotics which wouldl definitely lead to irreversable dysfiguring neurological problems like parkinson like disases in the long run ( if you don't already suffer) as well as metabolic disorders, type 2 diabetes and obessity which is accepted as number one cause of cancer. It's scientific fact that people episode even if they strictly take this drug regiment as much as the ones who don't take any drugs (just follow the researches on internet) at all. Moreover they can't quit these drugs because of the debilitating withdrawal symptoms of them. Now my question here is what will you do when your urologist endocrinologist, cardiologist and neurologist altogether say that you must quit these drugs otherwise it will have grave and even deadly consequences for you? What are you planing to do then? I always say this to those people who're lured into this psychiatric scam: The question here is not whether or not you're to quit these drugs. Because you'll definitely quit them sooner or later. The real question here is when you'll do it. Is it after or before irreversably wrecking your health?
