Very informative thanks, one tip i saw elsewhere was NOT to dip the applicator directly into the blue solution bottle as it could contaminate the blue, always pour some blue into a different container just as much as you need, that way if you spill it you do not lose the whole bottle!!!

Incredibly useful video! Also, the best music I've heard with one of these gunsmithing videos, by far! Have a Vz24 that was sold to Israel, rechambered for .308, I bought it for $100 at Gander Mountain as it was missing the handguard, rear sights, barrel bands, buttplate, etc, and nobody else would take it. The rifle is in great shape but the metal has an unattractive patina that is starting to give way to pitting and desperately needs a facelift. Was intending to blast and paint with engine enamel, but this is a much much faster and simple process, very easily explained! Thanks much!

Very informative! My only suggestion is that instead of the coarse Brillo pad, use #0000 superfine steel wool & dish soap. It will give you a flawless finish. It polishes so finely that you can use it to shine chrome without scratching.

I would agree that 0000 steel wool is the way to go. It can be used with solvent or oil to remove rust spots and prep the surface. If you rub in a straight line, it also polishes the surface. In my experience, there is no need for caustic chemicals to remove all old bluing when touching up a firearm finish. I remove rust with 0000 steel wool and Hoppes #9, degrease with brake cleaner, blue over the exposed metal and existing blue, and then use some more Hoppes to halt the rusting process.

Nicely done.. the key with bluing is patience, and removing the old finish entirely before bluing. I have found to achieve a darker finish is allow the bluing to stay on over a minute, it will start to chalk up kinda like a white residue. when all done with process really allowing good drying time the cover with a good gun oil.

Right on thanks man , Ive been watching a million vids on how to reblue my remington automaster that was absolutely massacred by the previous owner ! ( he took what seems to be 100 grit paper to it ffs) . Im really nervous about fkn this up and want to be sure of what im doing first. Im VERY precise about my cleaning ( adhd / ocd) and want to make sure i have everything just perfect. Your video was very helpful aside from all the others i watched because i see people all have different but some similiar ways of process. I would however use two bowls of water and slightly heat my metal before i start blueing it to allow the acid to get into the grain . But to each their own . Thanks again my frienz
@wsweld10 жыл бұрын
Good job on the video and the project's final result. If I may offer a suggestion regards to the final cleaning stage. Instead of wiping back and fourth which smears around and redeposits the contaminants. Wipe one direction, change to a clean section of cloth or shop towel, add more alcohol then wipe again. Continue the process until you have wiped the entire part to be coated. The end result will be an even cleaner workable substrate. My background is applying self-assembling Bionic Nanotechnology products to various surfaces. Our particles are roughly 50,000 times smaller than a strand of human hair, just to give perspective of surface preparation knowledge I have shared. Thanks again for taking the time to make this outstanding video. Will be working on my Father's old shotgun soon that I inherited. Take care brother!

Just finished bluing a Remington model 12. Bluing wouldn’t take and looked horrible. If you heat the metal it seems to go on better. I used a lot of bluing solution and used scotch brite soaked with bluing to scrub it into the metal. Many applications later and I called it done. Doesn’t look like original bluing but it’ll do. Great video, thank you! I appreciate you taking time to show all steps and not leaving out any details. This tube was smooth and it was easy to remove the old finish by using a steelwool. Most real-world projects, however, won't be as easy to prep because guns have serrations, cavities, embossed and debossed signs, other surface irregularities which would make it a pain to clean/prep the surface. What's the way to prep those non-trivial surfaces?

Glad I found this video! I bought this same kit to redo all the bluing on an 1955-56 Crosman model 160 .22/ Co2 variant 1pellet gun I'm restoring. The bluing is worn & rusted, the Co2 pressure tube seems to be (horrors!) painted? I think the toughest part will be the knurled Co2 tube cap & the fancy knurled nut that holds the barrel/tube assembly to the stock? Idk if fine steel wool & that remover chemical will be a very easy job at all? I'm finishing up refinishing the stock atm, which can be seen on my Airgun Shooter videos on here. I wonder if a toothbrush would make cleaning the knurled parts any easier???

Great video. I really want to do an old .22 revolver. My only concern is the water. I can see getting water in small crevasses and getting rust. But I suppose you could actually use like a hair dryer to help evaporate any water in the crevasses and make sure you lube everything after bluing. This gun has very little monetary value. But it has deep sentimental value. It was in BAD shape when it was handed on to me. But I'm excited to get it looking nice again.

I recently picked up an old Marlin mod 81 DL microgroove barrel. 22 bolt tube fed. No serial number or letter code. The stock is bare but full intact with original swivels and Marlin butt plate. The rifle is near mint except from about 6 inches to top of front barrel. Heavy rust that I mostly removed. Now once I get it to where I can get it I was thinking of instead of cold bluing the entire barrel ,just the trouble spots. I don't see any pitting just ugly rust on rust clumps that are mostly gone. The original blue is beautiful for its age. When you look at receiver and internal parts you wouldn't believe it's same rifle. This will be my first project re bluing . It's going to be a gift for my daughter's 16th birthday. Figure sand and stain stock and if blue comes out ok it should be nice first rifle for her. At same time I'm wondering if I should just get new used barrel?

I love how the cold bluing comes out when you do it right, however, slow rust bluing is a tried and true method that has been used for well over a century and provides a more durable finish on the metal parts as compared to a cold bluing which will come off much easier from use. Sure it is much more work, but that is the standard finish that I would offer customers due to its higher quality than other blued finishes.

Would like to add something tho.If you are going to work on guns, especially older ones, please get a hollow ground screwdriver set, Most screwdrivers (including the one used here) have a tapered angle to the pointy end versus a straight angle to the pointy end of a hollow ground screwdriver/screwdriver-bit. Torquing a regular screwdriver or any screwdriver that doesn't fill the slot almost end to end on a sticky screw can really mess up the slot.

Good video. I just wanted to touch up some worn spots on a 70 year old pistol. No rust, just worn down to the bare metal in a couple of spots. My first attempt with the Perma Blue came out splotchy, no doubt from improper cleaning. After watching this video, I tried again and got great results. One suggestion on your shop technique from a retired chemistry teacher. During your prep, you had two bottles open with the identical caps set aside. Are you sure you got the right cap on each bottle? If you recap each bottle immediately after dispensing the chemical you don't risk cross contamination by getting the wrong cap on a bottle. Or at least set the cap next to the bottle so you know which was which.
