The frustration I'm facing right now is my conure, while making good improvements, still has one nasty problem: she hates my dad and one of my brothers (autistic) But she is obsessed with my other brother who is only home on the weekends. If she is free flying around the main floor and my younger brother comes down for say lunch and I'm in the next room, she mistakes him for the brother she likes and lands on him, then she will immediately bite him, like she's mad its the wrong one. Same for my dad but at least my dad will try hard to hold his temper while I pick her up off him. (Even after the full blown attack she launched on him on a seperate occasion, he had ducked and tried to shoo her away but she kept flying back at him and making some awful noises I had never heard her make before. I got a hand towel and managed to dampen her flight enough to make her touch down on the floor.) Dad was nipped and she was unhurt. I honestly think she is reacting to their hostile and negative energy. My mom thinks she's being a willfully brat. I desperately want to train this out of her before she makes someone bleed and she gets issued an eviction notice. 💔 My problem is neither my dad or brother want to cooperate with training. 😔 I have worked with lots of animals over the years and managed to teach my second adopted dog to not bite. Advice always welcome. The way I got her to stop biting me is a NECKSOCK AND HAT. After wearing those for a while, she got use to being with me and just not biting or instead playing with it, now I can actually have her with me for periods of time without the necksock. I still have trust issues myself but that's me problem... 😅

The biggest issue you will have is your dad and brother not wanting to be involved. Unless she is kept away from them then unless they GET invovled and work to improve their relationship with her through training then it won’t get much better I’m sad to say! Even something as simple as reinforcing for calm or a quick target through the bars regularly may help.

@@TheParrotTeacher Well, we are working with my brother who is more willing to learn, He wears my hat and necksock and the bird sits with him for about 5-10 minuets. When she is not "chewing" on the necksock, (she chews on and plays with it while I wear it all the time, so I have a hard time telling when she plays, or when is being angry) she is given a really high value treat, like a piece of nutriberrie, while he reads a book. She did really good yesterday and I think it just allows the bird to sit with him, listen to his voice and feel his energy in a non hostile mood and allows my brother to learn to be calm with the sensation of a little bird crawling around not hurting him. I hope this is an acceptable first step.

Do you have a video on soft targeting? My cockatiel has accidentally learned to totally attack the target stick for a treat and bite hard, which I think has moved from the stick towards thinking biting things hard is good and will be rewarded.
@TheParrotTeacher
@TheParrotTeacher 6 ай бұрын
I have a recent video on soft targeting also a general video on target training that is older that mentions it! And it does translate for sure! If it’s consistently a biting problem then you’ll need to come from further away and only reinforce for soft licks or touches from now on!

I've got a Lovebird. She's a total Ninja. She does like to bite every now and then. Lovebirds are not so easy to train with treats, unlike other species of bigger birds. However, I love her to bits.
@TheParrotTeacher
@TheParrotTeacher 11 ай бұрын
I’d disagree there! While they can be flighty if you find the right treat and they are on a good diet they are just as trainable as any other parrot! I’ve worked with them in wildlife walkthroughs and got some great results after establishing treat hierarchy’s with them! One started off biting so hard then ended up nibbling my ear gently to ask for treats!

@@TheParrotTeacher hello! I actually just purchased a cage an hour ago. We are looking for one that’s spacious enough for them and also not too bulky for us since we live in an apartment. We do let them outside with us everyday as well. Most likely it’ll be only 2 cockatiels inside of this cage. Please let me know if you think this one is fine. I tried to reply earlier but my comment was taken down. Maybe for the link I tried to share for the cage I purchased. But here’s the name, I purchased it from Amazon also sold by the Yaheetech brand. @@TheParrotTeacher ok thank you for your help! One more question what are some good Air Purifiers that are safe for Cockatiels? What are some healthy snacks and food for them? Seed brand? Also how can I clean the bird cage? We recently used water, soap and a little bit of bleach. Thanks!
@TheParrotTeacher
@TheParrotTeacher Жыл бұрын
@@gucciserg8093 I have a video about air purifiers that talks about what to look for! Avoid bleach at all costs from now on. It's totally unsafe. There's a product called F10 that is excellent and bird safe. You can also use "Poop off" or just warm water. Seeds are seeds. They are best part of a varied diet.

I don't know but will rewatch & get other tips/info via your channel. Our recent rescue cockateil will step up if he's willing. For most part he bites & avoids - darts or flies off when our hand/fingers approach. Baby steps somehow. We would like to get that trust whereby we can tickle his head. He flies & stays on my head often. Guess that's to get a high vantage position & escape. So far he prefers to be on someone's head or shoulder. All in good time.

All about bonding, training, education, adjustment, and time. He's been thru a lot. His strength of being, stamina & character carried him thru to surviving recently being lost at large & his original owner. He has quite the whistling & talking repertoire along with truly a good nature. 👍 As he settles into my home, I notice how intelligent Bazza is & he helped himself to my All-Bran Cereal & water. Love it. ❤️ Sharing is caring. Look forward to learning loads. Cheerio 👋

Thanks for your work, your videos are really helpful! 🤗 I have a question - so I just got a parrotlet who is friendly. 4mths old. Day two of having him. We are getting used to each other as I am a first time bird owner so I appreciate the patience you speak about goes both ways😅 but I’m wondering - he has started pinching my neck and ears with just the tiniest sharp bite. It is not pleasant lol. I have been taking that as a signal that hooman time is wrapping up for a bit. I have been getting him off my shoulder, if he doesn’t want to step down, with the bowl of millet lol. Any idea why the sharp skin nips?
@TheParrotTeacher

He’s likely testing his boundaries or doesn’t know he’s hurting you! Either way you don’t want to encourage the behaviour or he will continue to do it!
@otterlyfresh2886

It’s interesting because Pavlovian training works with birds but not as well as it does with mammals. They learn so quickly how to manipulate the rules or only follow the ones they prefer. My ‘tiel gets millet if he puts toy fruits in a basket. He only likes the green apple so he’ll pick up and drop it repeatedly instead of completing the task, even if it means getting less millet.

Hey David! What would you do in a situation, if your cockatiel wont accept treats. My Cockatiel is almost 1 year old and he for some reason hates fingers suddenly overnight, I cant give him treats as he isn't treat motivated, even when on a healthy diet, and also hates fingers so much that he tries to lunge at my fingers when trying to give a treat.
@TheParrotTeacher

I’d try to do another heirarchy test to find out if their tastes have changed. I’d also use the bowl dropping method, as in having a bowl in the cage and just dropping a treat and moving on without interaction. I’d also look at what has changed? Is it hormones? Is it a break in trust or something in the environment etc

It’s very early days for you and your little one, so it may improve in time. I’d strongly recommend target training and soft targeting to help give her an alternative to do and also to teach softer interactions. I actually have a whole series filmed dedicated to biting but haven’t had the opportunity in my schedule to pop it up. If you’re really struggling I’d consider booking a consultation with our business (link in bio)
