Hey I just wanted to tell you I found you on accident. I have a Rosebreasted Cockatoo that was really being a cranky baby. Biting, and screaming, and testing me. Well I changed up his diet based on your videos and he’s like a different bird. Lovable, trainable, quiet. Man! Your channel has been a blessing to new bird owners like me. I wasn’t giving him junk food but his diet wasn’t as well rounded as it is now and kaboom! Here’s the bird I was hoping I’d get. So anyway, thank you!

Great advice, and Alfie is a cutie! I've had two conures in my life. Both were lively, smart, and fun. The first one bite me hard enough to break skin only ONCE in her 22 years. The second, a green-cheek conure, got the same healthy diet as my first conure (Harrison's pellets, fresh fruits and veg, etc.) but drew blood several times a month. Sometimes he'd fly after me and bite the back of my neck, like a tiny vampire. On the other hand, he could sit on my knee for hours while I worked on my keyboard. So safe to say we were bonded. He was adorable, but could be like Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde.

Practice exchanges roles as well. I.e. if he mostly does the feeding etc. you do it and when you feel confident be the one to take it out of the cage, and introduce it to new people as often as possible. It’s in a parrots nature to like one person ore than anyone. Keep me posted :)

@@parrotsco.3224 we are doing that with the feeding. She (11) takes food from me but then sometimes she lunges at me. We’ve only had her a week. In her last home she was well loved and accepted all the family members. I can’t help thinking I inadvertently set her off when she bit me and might have just been testing my arm perch. I pulled away and since then the games been on. I got her perch trained but I do feel my husband needs to be out the room as she has eyes for him only. On the other hand our African grey (21) loves me and hates my husband. We want to try clicker training both birds . I felt so discouraged as I’ve trained larger macaws but they were very young. Now I have a huge respect for her beak! What’s your opinion on gently blowing at them if they bite? It’s been suggested and would love advice on that please . Not so,etching I’ve done in the past

READ ALL OF THIS : Great video, thanks. Just just bought one and a half year old African Grey with its cage. They said it was so tame. Day one…. flew at me inside cage on the attack. I left it alone so it could get used to new surroundings. Morning day 2- used one click on a clicker and gave it part of a cracker. Spent nearly all day with it, using clicker. We were both VERY wary of each other. I never opened the cage door, being very wary of that beak. Wanted a very short head rub…through bars….Day three - he came over to cage for a head rub…fingers tentatively through bars again. Responded well to one click food. Afternoon day 3…I had to put new items in cage for him from pet store. I opened cage door, put my hand in and he ignored me totally. Later I opened door again and he put his head down for head rub, at back of cage on branch. I bit the bullet and put my finger on back of his head. He rubbed against it so I massaged his head with other fingers. He lifted his leg and outstretched his toes to be picked up. I backed away and closed the gate. I returned later and he did exactly the same routine. So did I, and closed the gate. I pulled a chair up next to his cage at the side facing forward with my iPad and put on parrot sounds. He came over to investigate, got bored and walked off. I changed you tube to something different for me, turned my head and his face was next to mine watching through the bars. After a few minutes he walked over to his dish picked up a peanut walked back over, turned around and carried on watching. ( won’t let him see p*rn as they remember and repeat !) I left and returned later opened cage, gave him a head rub and he put his beak and tongue over my fingers,…while I sweated. He put his foot out to be picked up and I backed off., because it may be a different story getting him down from the curtains. That will come later when we both are confident with each other. Each time I approached him I have given him a treat. I don’t use clicker now and he comes straight over. The key is to watch his reactions to everything and act accordingly. Take your time…no sudden movements. If he gets startled, ie a dog barking, back away. If he goes to bite say NO firmly then leave the room. He stops biting because he wants to seem me again. I do have loads of hanging parrot toys from pet store in cage.Boredom= aggression. Don’t give up.

I adopted a 15 year old female senegal on Monday. At first she was sweet with me, but then she started attacking my hands. I left her in her cage for most of the day today, but I talked to her. I gave her treats. I let her out about 30 mins ago. She sitting on my shoulder napping. I'm a bit scared of her now after she attacked me a few times. What I was wondering is what kind of movements or posture am I looking for before she strikes? She gets really close to my face and preens me. I don't want to be afraid because she is sweet. I have a 1 year old GCC and I know her very well, but a senegal is all new to me. Thanks for the videos! They're very helpful.

The most difficult thing for me is to understand the type of bite. For example sometimes he bites me lightly in order to walk by using his beak as an extra hand. Sometimes he gets pissed of when I insist getting him off my shoulders, sometimes it looks like he is liking me.... I would appreciate a second video about biting in order to elaborate between different types of bites. Best regards and thanks for your efforts!

Good point!! Usually there’s body language before bites and you can anticipate what you’re doing when it happens. Shouldering biting parrots 🦜 is a no no in my opinion should be seen as a reward not a right for them haha but he’s just trying to communicate he doesn’t want to come off 🤔

Hi, I’m a few days into researching pet birds cause I think I might want one (I’m gonna research and wait over a year or so before deciding/planning for one). I’m really enjoying your videos and I was wondering about certain household living changes - I know that they have delicate respiratory systems and that chemical-based household cleaners + sprays shouldn’t be used around them, or at the very least should be well-aired out before bringing a bird into the room, etc. What alternatives could or do you use instead to clean in general? And if its solely vinegar/water/dish soap (for example), how difficult is it, really, to switch entirely to these alternatives?
@parrotsco.3224

Hey Tara! I personally don't use any household cleaning products while Elfie is in the room I'm cleaning. I will usually move him around to well ventilated areas and let the house air out before putting him back in his cage. I use eco-friendly/natural cleaning supplies. There are some bird friendly cleaning supplies out there I would look into as well. (Don't forget to change out your cooking pans to ceramic ones, this is worse than cleaning supply odors, teflon can kill your parrot within the day.)

re-homed conure that bites profusely. Have him out of the cage most of the day; he plays gets fresh fruit veg snacks, lots of attention, scritches; likes being near me (clingy even) until he senses separation (bed or me having to leave for any amount of time). I cant sustain this level of involvement though much longer. I have things to do and cant spend 6-8 hours a day accomodate-baby sitting; walking on egg shells for him; would take him with me places but cant begin to consider training when he is so difficult.

I have a Senegal who we got back in 2005, although we also had a female one that died a few years later from a tumor growth. We had a big cage for him, but we didn't let him out. He then decided to make his great escape by destroying the cage and creating a big hole in it. We didn't bother getting another cage, as he goes in and out as he pleases and chews on a plank of wood that sits next to his cage. He used to be really wild and scared of humans, however he did become more tame. He will not let my hand go near him though and will bite and has bitten me a number of times. He will play with me, though, by using a long metal chain that I use to stroke his head with in and out of his cage. When he is sitting on top of the cage, he will walk up to me, jump across things, but what he does when he sees me is, climb down from the top of the cage and up to his perch, so I can stroke him with the chain. He will also let me hold his head up, using it with his beak. He almost drifts off to sleep doing that. I also trained him to say hello, and he repeats this when he's getting sometimes petted, although it's more when I'm talking to him. He squaks loudly when you ring his bell or is wanting attention. He actually broke the bell hammer, so he can't ring it :-D. We spray him to help him against mites but when he see's the bottle he does a runner and shuts up if he's been squawking. Initially when I interacted with him, we played a game where I would stroke his beak whilst he was in his cage. He would hang on the side, rest his beak before he tried to bite me, like a game of chicken. He escaped and flew out the house after a cat got in a month or two ago, so he's lucky to still be alive, as this was near darkness. I luckily found him in the garden, although he was in a bit of shock. The cat didn't cause him any harm, fortunately. It was the only time he allowed me to stroke his head in the bag he was in that I used to retrieve him. The next day he was back to his old self again.

i hate to ask some possibly repetitive questions but i'm stumped. i have a 7mo old green-cheek conure that i took home after two and a half months. she was the only one in her nest, so she isnt socialized with other birds but is EXTREMELY social with humans. loves to be on hands and shoulders at all times! climbing onto hands is no issue for her, however, she tends to want to bite fingernails, fingertips, and ears TOO hard. it seems like she's trying to play but doesn't know her strength, and when we pull away or put her down, she goes into attack mode and bites as hard as she can. i've watched so many videos and i feel like i don't get consistent answers on how to train a bird not to bite. when she bites, we have tried putting her down and walking out of the room briefly, we have tried ignoring it, we have tried using a low tone and saying "be gentle", we have tried gently gripping her beak and saying "no", and nothing has worked. its frustrating because i understand her body language when she doesn't want to be handled or pet, so we avoid doing so. but she will randomly start chomping on fingers or ears for fun, without any provoking, and i am at a loss on how to handle this. i take it that you are suggesting we reward behavior when she ISN'T biting, but how soon after a bite do we give positive reinforcement for not biting, without accidentally rewarding her FOR biting? how do i go about teaching her to not do this? thank you again!

If she is a baby, they tend to have this short attention span and play with everything much like human kids. I would just practice the step up for short increments and without having her bite your nails and reward when she steps up and doesn’t bite your finger nails.

Very informative video. I have a Indian ringneck. She was a great bird when she was little but now she’s a grumpy bird and bites at times. I’m tired of bloody hands. I love her to death but since she has gotten this biting mode I really don’t like to handle her much. I give her a mixture of fruits and vegetables and seeds but I’m curious what kinds of mix do you feed your bird?
@parrotsco.3224
@parrotsco.3224 3 жыл бұрын
I rarely feed my parrot fruits it’s basically a super treat because it’s so high in sugar. I recommend a blended veggie mix and pellets. I don’t feed my parrot any seeds (only as treats). A lot of parrots can go through this phase from baby to adult. Positive reinforcement with treats and preventing the biting (awareness) are important in the transition.

My two lovebirds (male and female) don't bite very often. The only time the female bites is when she findes some hiding spot around my house and decides thats her nest now. What i did is that i manage the enviroment she is in, that means for example i fly them only in the hall, where are no hiding spots and when i get them on the better diet i might start slowly introducing other rooms. We are transitioning almost a year now, but i see some progress in eating pellets so i just have to stay positive and hope they will eventually eat it full time. Also what i do with her is that when i see on her body that she is hormonal right now, i don't present my hand, she would have bitten me in that moment. Instead i present targer, which she will most of the time exept, and get her from the place which is making her hormonal. My male bites in the cage when i try remove some stuff or even put in. Thats why i try a) not having him in the cage when i am doing it, or b) fill his beak full with his favourite treats, try eating something and biting someone at the same time😂. With this method i even thought my female to give kisses and don't bite in the process. My male also bites when he gets scared. This problem we have still not reduced, but when i see he's not comfortable on me i put him on something else. Btw I really like your video, you have mentioned almost all i can think off. The only think i would add is that parrots in the wild use more body language for communication. If the other bird doesn't respond, than they bite. It's same with parrots at home. It is first noticiable at their body language that they will bite. If we do not respond, they have no other choice that to bite. Over time, they can learn that we just don't respect their body language and will skip this step and just go for the bite, as we usually really quicky react to that.

I got 2 Quaker parrots that were 6 & 9 months old in December. I’ve had birds for 10 years and have never had this problem. My male Quaker bites HARD and thinks it’s a game. He loves to play and jumps on my shoulder and preens my lips but if I ever try to touch him with my hands he freaks out and bites me and doesn’t let go. They eat a strict diet of roudybush pellets food and vegan oil free whole food. He runs to the top of his cage and wants attention but then bite when I try to touch him. He bops his head and laughs at me. He’s been like this since I got them and now he’s teaching his mate to bite me too. He bites on his cage and off the cage. And laughs every time. I never try to force him. I just offer my hand close to him to teach him over time my hands aren’t going to hurt them. Any help?

Hi, I’m having a 2-year-old female peach face lovebird for a month. I got her from a pet shop. She’s quite aggressive. We usually open the cage door in the afternoon and let it fly out of the cage freely. Yesterday and today, she flew out and landed on my head (for the first time, I was actually quite flattered as I see it as a kind of interaction with her), she was quite calm and even fell asleep on my head and my back, but today, after the nap, she bit my neck twice, I have small wounds though no blood came off. I really fear her bite and not dare point my fingers near her, but I also wanna tame her. Could you tell me what I can do to tame her? My mum first hand-fed her a grape today and I have tried hand-fed her seeds before (she was also aiming for the fingers once she ate the seeds ...)

Hi again, love Alfie and your video's. I'm having a few issues with my Kiwi (senegal) he is hand tame, will target, recall and do a few tricks. My problem is, he attacks my 13yr old, i don't know how to stop this. I don't want to permanently cage him as thats cruel. Would break my heart if i had to rehome him. Any advice would be much appreciated. Oh I'm still struggling trying to harness train. I've tried to desensitise him by holding it, laying it on his back, asking him to put his head through wing loop with a treat ect, which he will do but the next stage of asking him to put his head through the head loop is proving difficult, he either flies off, bites or he'll put his head through to get the treat then freezes, falls backwards off his perch, again, if you have any advice, it would be much appreciated. Its to cold for him to go out till spring, fingers xd, I'll hopefully train him by then. I'm uk. Thank you for all your advice. Just also wanted to ask you, roughly how many nuts ect can they have for treats, ie is ig healthy to give a whole Almond a day as a big reward aswell as treats for training? Hope you don't mind all my questions. Thank you xx

It takes time for your bird to settle in, Elfie did the same thing when I got him rehomed. I would give him treats when I went to have him step up and through the cage for him to like me more. Took about 2-4 weeks lol. Look into changing its diet from all seeds this helped Elfie a lot to settle down and not be a bully as much.

He won't let me pat him at all he pins his eyes and hisses and him being the first big bird I've owned it's kind of intimidating I try not to show my fear but he just gets so aggressive he's only in his cage at night and then gets let out once I wake up gets fed a good veggie diet and the occasional fruit has toys and a big cage am I doing something wrong if I could get any advice that would help alot thanks

My parrot does drive by’s. He will be nice and act like he wants you to interact with him then he bites ur ear or your finger (recently he bit my husbands face Uber his eye and drew blood!) and the he quickly flies away. Responding to him is difficult bc then it’s a chase to catch him and I know this is not good…I don’t want to clip his wings, so how do I deal with this? (Note, he was hand fed when we purchased him from the breeder and my daughter had him, but it’s clear she wasn’t doing what she promised to train him, so now I have him.) pls help.

I just got my pineapple conure. And he is getting ok with me reaching in his cage to change his food and water and liner. He’ll let me hand feed him. He even grabs the tiny seeds really gentle. But he won’t perch on my finger. When I let him out. He flies to my head. But won’t let me touch him. He won’t let me pet him yet. I’ve been waiting and backing off. And enforcing good behaviour with his favourite treats. Those little white seeds lol he won’t eat fresh leafy veg or peppers. Any ideas on how to encourage? He threw the grapes on the cage floor. 😳 same with the blueberries. I was leaving them whole like he would find in the wild. But idk lol do I cut those up too?? My first bird was on a all around pellet diet and she loved all fruits and veggies lol

My Indian ringneck parrot constantly bites my lips. She is very tame and will gladly step up or do target training, but the second she has a chance to grab onto my lip she will do it. It's almost as if she is trying to forcefully open my mouth. The bites are very hard. We can be chilling in bed then she'll just look at me and remember that I own lips and stroll over for a bite. She is very persistent and when I get her to let go of me she will do everything to get back. Even if I manage to shooo her away she will come back to do the same thing, but a little bit more cautiously. Do you have any advice? Please help :(

Sounds like you parrot is biting you to not put it away and is aggressive in the cage. Could be because you just got her and she’s not used to you. I would work on step up training/positive interaction through the cage. I wouldn’t let my parrot out of its cage unless it steps up to come out as part of training.

i have a 21 yo male dyh amazon, he belonged to my partner of 23 years, the amazon was bonded to my partner, my partner died unexpectedly in 2014, the bird was ok with me for a while after, then i had to move, at the new place i would let him out of the cage all day he was in a "high traffic" area he began lunging at visitors, so i moved him now if i let him out he even lunges at me and bites and draws blood before my partner got him he was with a female dyh and was seperated,then the former owner was mean to him, my partner felt bad for him so he took him..... whats the best way to deal with this issue, the birds diet consists of pellets and fruits and veggies, would the bird be better off with a different person since my partner is gone?

My Quaker does not like to eat many nuts. He eats seeds, carrots, cooked corn, not hard, fruits, and sometimes, plain spaghetti or elbow n]macaroni, but he will not eat any nuts, except pumpkin seeds. I really don;t know what to give him. He is really a good bird and loves to sit on my shoulder and pick at my ears, etc., and sometimes, he will bite, but not hard. He is very territorial, but, I can get through that. He only comes to me, as I am his main caregiver. My hubby isn’t a bird lover, so it is kind of hard. He loves my two youngest granddaughters, ages 13 and 11, but will not go on their fingers yer. I guess what I really would like to know is what else can I feed him? I wash everything before I give it to him. Any ideas? Great videos. Thank you.

It all depends on your parrot and what his preferences are. You can try putting a bunch of different treats on the table when he’s hungry and see what he goes to first. The top 1-3 you can use for training rewards. Aside from that having a chop/pellet diet will help improve its desires for treats because of scarcity etc.

And when i try taking him off my shoulder his pupils dilate and he bites my fingers. He eats veggies, fruits, seeds and pellets. He gets his 12 hours of sleep. But now his moods are terrible and idk what to do 😭 i dont want to rehome him. I got him when he was 1 month and a half. I fed him his formula etc etc. Hes still sweet but the ear biting and finger biting is beginning to be too much and hes a baby im scared of what he will become once he gets older

@parrotsco.3224 3 жыл бұрын
Sounds like there might not being any positive reinforcement on not biting. I would recommend you start target training and basic step up/step down commands. He’s a baby still so he’s trying to go off instinct which is to bite to communicate. This is when we have to step in and teach our birds wanted/unwanted behavior. I would avoid shouldering until he completely gets over this bad habit. He’s basically communicating that he doesn’t want to come down off your shoulder. Think of reasons for him to come down off the shoulder I.e. treats, play time, toys etc. Try removing the seeds and fruits only as treats during training. Veggies/pellets are good. Hope this helps let me know if you need more 1-on-1 help/insights.

@@parrotsco.3224 thank you! He does step up perfect! He rarely uses his beak on stepping up. But when he sees sunflower seeds he comes down or any fruit lol. So for now he will not be on my shoulder:) thank you. It amazes me how my rooster is the sweetest thing ever but my parrot is the terrible one 😂😂 haha. Thank you again!
@parrotsco.3224

Hahaha funny how that works! Yeah try to get some formalized training going whether it’s tricks, targeting etc. And just the basics of getting on/off of you. Try to train getting off your shoulder as a trick/reward because when he comes off and doesn’t bite he gets a treat. The key is to avoid the bites altogether so it’s not programmed behavior etc

My parrot is a rescue and everyone gives her treats when they walk by. She'll let me get her out of the cage and doesn't bite me often, but she then will fly and attack another family member if their in the room. Im afraid to let my sister and her boyfriend interact with her without me in the room because they smack her if she flys at them. Not to mention my sister walks in there terrified while her boyfriend trys to dominate the bird. I feel like if they interact with her outside of the cage without me she'll be better but I don't want my grandma or her to get hurt. She's on a good diet, gets plenty of sleep and has been with us for a few weeks.

Well it makes sense why your parrot keeps attacking your sister and her bf if they smack your parrot 🦜. It’s going to create a negative feedback loop and this bird will not like anyone but you in the future. I wouldn’t let them interact with your parrot outside of the cage without you. You can try working with your sister and you in a separate room away from your parrots cage where you might have her practice any step up or trick training and your sister present treats to build a better relationship. Keep me posted!

@Anonymous-fj2uo

It makes perfect sense. Poor diet can influence mood and highten behaviour, not to mention mess with their hormones. Wild birds have never had human contact, they naturally see people as a threat, that's why they bite. With birds that have human contact, there are many different things that can lead to bites.

Hey Jynxie! To be honest have not worked with any lorakeets and I know their diet is a little different than most parrots. I would give the morning feeding then during the last feeding (motivation to eat is higher) you can try getting a bunch of different treats you think she would like and see which ones she picks (could be fruit, nuts, etc) the hand nibbling is a baby think where they are getting a feel for their beak and will chew on things like babies humans do haha hopefully this passes with time!
