@@yektakurt1080 correct, my point is that the English iteration cannot include the ‘ü’. Türkiye has to be anglicized. Hence, either people will keep on using ‘Turkey’ or adopt ‘Turkiye’. Pronunciation is unlikely to change in any case. As a general rule, common-usage language cannot be regulated or mandated. The change is always gradual, if any.

As a Turkish citizen I didn't mind English speaking people calling our country Turkey because I know the name doesn't come from the bird, it's the other way around. So, some Brits didn't say let's name that country after a bird to mock them. Either the bird was brought to Britain from Turkey and they named the bird after our country or they saw the American bird but they thought it looked like some other bird coming from Turkey. That's basically the commonly accepted theory. So, I think it's pointless to change your country's name in other languages and I don't think it's gonna have an effect on daily life. You'll probably keep saying and writing "Turkey" in English. I think it's just a populist political move to affect some ignorant nationalist votes. The funniest thing you would be amused is that we have the same thing for India in Turkish. "Hindi" means both Indian and turkey (bird) in Turkish and "Hindistan" is the Turkish name for the country which could roughly be translated to "land of turkeys" quite similarly. Funny right? But it's the same story. We didn't name the country after the bird, we named the bird after the country because the bird came to our land from India in the old times. And when talking about the country we really rarely think of the bird, the mind simply doesn't go there often. A few jokes in elemantary school, sure... But after a certain age it's not an issue at all...

@@ceydaoncu4205 If I'm not mistaken, it comes from the same roots etimologically. It passed to Turkish from Arabic or Persian. It was originally "Hindi" but evolved into "Hint" in modern Turkish. I believe some Turkish dictionaries (not the official TDK one) still include the older version. Also, the "Hindistan" part is still the same. It literally means "the land of turkeys" besides the country.

Heres something you may find interesting. :) The name of my country has nothing to do with the interesting and delicious bird ''turkey'', well let me explain. :) Name of my country has always been Turkiye, that is Turk-iye, it's been known as such since around the 1200's, spelled to phonetically resemble ''Turkiye'' in different languages, where the -iye suffix means ''land of/belonging to''.... ...just like the Latin suffix -ia in such countries as Latv-ia, Roman-ia, Eston-ia, Austr-ia, Austral-ia etc etc. Another example; decades ago Czechoslovakia Republic changed it's name to Czech Republic and a few years ago changed that to Czechia (that is Czech-ia). Anyways, most likely the Latin -ia suffix was derived from the Turkish version -iye, as Turkish is much much older. Because in old times people of different languages could only pronounce it as their languages allowed them, we got various differences in spelling like Turchia (in Italian), Turquie (in French) and Turkey (in English) all trying to resemble the pronounciation of ''Turk-ia'' thus Turkiye. Mind you this was way BEFORE the animal we currently know as 'turkey'' was found by the europeans when they explored the north americas, the bird was sent to europe from north americas in the year 1519, so upuntil that they there was no bird named 'turkey'.... ...they came across the bird and thought it was a specie of the fowl/chicken they had been buying from the country of Turkiye at the time, so they named the bird ''Turkey Fowl'' meaning ''Turkish Chicken''..... ....just like how a dog breed is known as German Shepherd (because it's from Germany), Rhodesian Ridgeback (because it's from Rhodesia), American Bulldog, British Terrier, Greek Harehound etc etc. In time you don't get to call the Greek Harehound as simply as ''Greek''; or you don't call the British Terrier as ''British''; or the German Shepherd as ''German'', but in time the Turkish Fowl started to be called just ''turkey'', and has been going on for hundreds of years. Now in 2023, this is causing confusion, especially when we have people across the world unable to point to their OWN country on the atlas, this ''confusion over the naming'' needed to be corrected. So my country decided to rectify this confusion that has been going on for so long and corrected the name in other languages to Türkiye, which it always was, we basically didn't change the name of our country, we changed the mistake made in the English language. : ) So, there's some tid bit information for you to have a great day, if you read upto this point you have a great night too, ohh just have a wonderfull life. : ) Best wishes. ;)

Trevor, I don't know if you are reading these comments, but I just wanted to say that I was very upset after watching this video. Türkiye is the proper name of our country (as in Turkish, our country's name is Türkiye), so there is actually no name change happening. I hate that people are being misinformed about this and thinking that we want to change our name just because they have been referring to our country as Turkey in English. I'm a big fan of yours, but I wish you and your team had done your research properly before shooting this bit, as this video ended up being a mockery, and I'm sure I wasn't the only one who was offended by the misinformation and misrepresentation. :(

I think that Turkey changing it's name is just pointless, and nothing more than a political stunt by Erdoğan. The name Turkey comes from the Turkish people, and the name of the bird comes from the Turkish people when european colonizers compared the bird to a fowl commonly traded by Turkish merchants back in the day. Besides, at least Turkey's domestic name sounds a lot like its international one, and there are lots of other countries who's international names don't sound anything like their domestic names, like two mentioned in this video: Hungary (Magyároszag), Greece (Hellas), as well as China (Zhongguo), Finland (Suomi), Japan (Nippon), Both Koreas (Choseon for the north and Hanguk for the south), as well as other countries.

😂 Okey. This is a funny situation. Other countries have different names. Egypt is actually referred to as corn in us. Germany is referred to as "Almanya". It is quite possible that there is confusion between languages. But in the past, no one cared about this situation in Turkey. Not yet. English pronunciation just changed. We refer to it as "Turkiye". This is a name of Latin origin meaning the land of the Turks. We didn't put it. Asia used to be called Turkiye. These are mentioned in Byzantine and Roman sources. The settlers in Anatolia gave it the name Marco Polo Little Turkiye. There is no name change, as you might think. We combined international usage with national usage. Germans can do it too. Dautchland, Germany, Almanya. Come on, it's really complicated. Turkey means hindi. Hindi means Indian. Because turkey passed from there to us and from us to Europe. That's how it's named. I really think it's an unnecessary change. But if you do it anyway.
