The Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive (LAWD) in Central Florida is an amazing birding resource that is actually a lake restoration area for Lake Apopka to which the St.Johns River Water Management District has kindly provided public access. It is the top eBird hotspot in Florida. Address is 2850 Lust Road, Apopka, FL. Gates are open to vehicular traffic from 7 am to 3 pm only Friday, Saturday, Sunday and most federal holidays---those are the days when District staff and contractors are not working out there. Since LAWD reopened after a COVID-19 shutdown and reorganization with the District's new safety procedures, the front gate closes at 3 pm and you must exit by 5 pm. This review of LAWD birding by the Bird Chats with Orange Audubon Society team was recorded January 14, 2021 and focuses on winter birds. The team will record a similar program featuring birds seen in other seasons.
