Bird Chick Chokes to Death from Overfeeding

This video shows the brutal side of nature. A 3 day old cowbird chick in a finch nest was overfed seeds and choked to death. It appears the finch mother regurgitated too many seeds into the baby birds mouth which caused the chick to choke and suffocate. The finch mother was not able to remove the seeds before the chick died. This is a common risk for baby birds as their mouths at a very young age can easily be clogged causing them to suffocate if not helped. Usually mothers are able to remove the stuck food but sometimes they are unable to. An explanation video of this event will be coming out shortly.

It is instinct, when chicks sense movement or parents nearby the open their beaks. Maybe it 'tried' also for the mother bird to get out the food stuck. Birds do that often if the food is too big or too much. Poor chick.

I was all of about 75 lbs. in high school. The food was fantastic...fresh cooked roast beef, real mashed potatoes, green beans, homemade yeast rolls and a bottle of ice cold milk. I scarfed it down! Baby birds have the irresistible urge to gape even if they are not hungry. Had to raise 3 baby mockingbirds whose mom was killed last year and nest was destroyed. I accidentally killed one from overfeeding due to thinking it was still hungry because it was constantly gaping. Came back to check in them and one was dead with food coming out of its mouth. Lesson was learned. Other two chicks survived and flew.

At first I thought this was a rare case of a chick hatching first and being over-fed by both parents since there was an abundance of food, but then I read the description and saw it was a cowbird chick that hatched and I am far less sorry that it died, as it would have crowded out all the other chicks to claim all the food and let the rest die. Not quite as brutal as a cuckoo chick, but almost. In a way it was almost karmic, but no. It's just nature.

Cowbirds also lay 'parasite' eggs in other birds nests which hatch first and claim all the food the parents bring, usually starving out all the other chicks. Cuckoos are a bit worse, literally tossing out the native eggs as soon as the cuckoo hatches,and if it cannot it will toss the hatchlings out as soon as possible, as well as claim all the food and keep the parents feeding it non-stop.

This is a House finch nest. House finches eat almost exclusively seeds and other vegetable matter, even feeding their young the same. The baby cowbird would not have done well regardless, because cowbirds need more insects in their diet. Shame that the eggs of the House finch had to suffer because of a baby Cowbird who probably would have died anyway.

It's all driven by instinct, as can be demonstrated in the cases of eagles adopting a prey hawk chick only to wind up feeding and rearing it to fletch. They respond to the gaping and the begging. They can't even tell if only one chick is hogging all the food to the detriment of the siblings. There are no bonding or emotional attachments.

My first thought was ngl that is kind of funny. Then I found it it was a parasitic bird and I didn't feel bad for laughing. @@Strype13 could tell by just the glance of the shape of the spider. That one had a huge behind though. It is common for birds to eat ans give their young, but that was too much for that little one off the bat. Maybe Ive watched to many of such vid to tell even the outline shape that it was what did that one in.

Mother was either really smart or really dumb. By choking the baby to death it insured the death of its own. Ultimately the nest was destroyed by the mother cowbird... Yes a cruel fate but it is nature. Sometimes the finch should have just let the other baby live.
