I have received wonderful feedbck from cat owners on these videos. Thanks! Even though these videos don't receive many views, it's something I really enjoy doing. :) I appreciate your comment.

When the sun came over the horizon the fill of light into the shadows was very good. You have some beautiful species of birds there - far more colourful than most of ours, where bright plumage is very much the exception.

Ordered one and can't wait for the early April shipping date. If you set it near the entrance to a hive would it pick up bee flight? If i put it on a post, which direction would you recommend it facing? South to get maximum sun exposure? East for morning sun? I have a couple of bluebird feeders with the small holes and have i would guess a half dozen pairs. Will have yo retrain them to this. Thanks for the great videos and advice.
@FrederickDunn9 ай бұрын
Yes, the camera has sensitivity settings on it, you can put it on the most sensitive motion detection and it will trigger particularly when it's still cool and the bees start to fly. Less effective when bee bodies match the surrounding temps.
@kennith.9 ай бұрын
There is definitely a huge difference in the amount of fill you are getting now. As the sun came over the tress and the birds were strongly backlit, I could definitely see the difference from before. Was wondering since you left the section where the feed comes out transparent, if painting that would give more up fill. Thank you for the 4K upload.
@FrederickDunn9 ай бұрын
Thanks, Kennith... yes, I think painting all of those surfaces white would improve the lighting. But traded that for being able to see the feed level there. I've removed the camera and placed it by a hive to see if it triggers when a bee flies out or returns... and it does! Impressive camera!

Great video and sound, I miss the birds back east, former PA boy here. I'm in Oregon now, and there are no real song birds here, or at best every few. Thanks Fred. Maybe I'll come back.
@FrederickDunn9 ай бұрын
I notice in cities and many urban areas, the song bird species have been pushed out by house sparrows. If people only understood how truly destructive they are.
@thomasplummer26739 ай бұрын
@FrederickDunn From what we have noticed is in SW Oregon there are no song birds, we do get blue birds and a couple wrens but that's about it. Here, when the sun is coming up, it's quiet except for ravens and crows. I mess the noise of the back east sun rise. Blue Knob area was my stomping ground. Thanks Fred.

That's a great setup. And great yard! I'm watching your bee videos very often, as you are one of the best 🐝 educators on YT. Thank you. I'm successfully coming out of my first winter with two hives. My apiary is in city garden in Bristol UK. Did you ever experiment with live stream cameras for outdoor hive observation? Cheers from UK
@FrederickDunn9 ай бұрын
Thank you so much! We really don't have enough bandwidth do have a live-stream that remains on and available. Maybe in the future we could do something like that.
@VideoEngineering9 ай бұрын
@@FrederickDunn I'm thinking about it. We have tons of bandwidth 😁. I would like to educate people about bees as i educate myself. We are going to start this year. Just with a shorts about bee life. I'm hoping to build a bee shed, with observation hive next year. Excited. All the best.

I’m going to put some Bettercomb in some new horizontal I’ve built to hopefully help entice some swarms into them. I don’t have any old frames to use unless I rob my other hives. I am baiting with some small pieces of comb and lemongrass oil. My question is where would you install those bettercomb frames to best entice them. I’m putting one bettercomb per horizontal hive. My entrances are on the ends like your plans. I’m thinking either the second frame from the end wall or the fifth frame from the end wall. I’m running 10 frames with the follower board to entice them.
@FrederickDunn9 ай бұрын
Wherever your entrance ends, I'de have the BetterComb one frame in from that. But I don't think placement will be critical. I think having your follower board at the 10th frame as you've mentioned sounds like it will be sized right. I hope it works out.

Hi, Fred. I just got mine, thanks to you. I'm very happy with the quality. The birds seem to like it a lot too. I have a pair of bluebirds and a pair of cardinals practically living in it. My question is how's your battery life? I don't live view often but it's already down to 75% in less than a week.
@FrederickDunn8 ай бұрын
I think that battery life is variable based on how many triggers it records, and how cold is is outside. I pull it in and charge it up every 14 days as I don't want the battery to have to deep-cycle when charging. I'm still very happy with it and I've reached out to the company regarding offering a stand-alone camera. They are very responsive, so that may happen. On the most sensitive setting, you could monitor a swarm trap's activity. I'm glad you like it!
@no1slisteninganyway8 ай бұрын
@@FrederickDunn That makes sense. It triggered over 200 times today. The birds are going nuts for that soldier fly larvae. I'll be trying the paint modification you showed too to improve the lighting.
@tasmedic9 ай бұрын
Clever idea, Fred, and I've learned another thing from you! I've had more success spraying plastics than painting. It's quicker, too. Probably cheaper, if you look for expired automotive spray cans in the shade of white (!) you're looking for.
@FrederickDunn9 ай бұрын
Thanks, I'll remember that next time :) this was quicker for me since I had to do it inside and didn't want to tape it all off.

No units available?? Been looking at this intently for a week, been talking to support about it too... and go to buy 2 of them today through your Aff link and can't get to checkout as it put me on some email waiting list from 2 months ago?? lol...

It's an odd situation. Try going directly to their site and ignore the link. Maybe that will work. They had a larger than expected response and are re-organizing.

@@FrederickDunn No difference using the straight URL to their site to buy... Amazon USA will not send it to me in Canada, even if they have it.. and Amazon CAN does not even have it listed... no support response from them using 2 different support emails, even when replying to their email sent to me, and 3 different posts on their Facebook page either.. answers received are mostly generic when specifics were asked for and did not even address 3/5 questions and responded in poor, non native English with a clear misunderstanding of said language... dysfunctional company at best at this juncture. Great review you've done and deserving of the affiliate comm.. **UPDATE** Support got back to me with the rest of my answers from the earlier inquiry Tried to buy from their site, waiting list page shows up... BUT I contacted support and they just told me now that they are selling them through the Amazon Canada site, which I checked, they are now.. yesterday I checked there and no listings.. Amazon USA has it but will not deliver to Canada... so grab one off of Amazon Canada if here... stock could deplete and backorder soon. I could not find one anywhere after looking for many days and not getting support help either, but they came through late but satisfactory.. as long as Amazon fulfills my order lol, will let you know here if they do not.. Wouldn't you get even better lighting if the extended roof was clear plastic? Just a thought.
@FrederickDunn9 ай бұрын
It's in the shade of dense spruce branches. Just putting it out on a post would solve all of the lighting issues :)
@barryguthrie80619 ай бұрын
The White pain probably helped, but it still looks too dark to see the bird features and their colors well. I could see the use of a small solar cell with a few LED lights would give better filming light. The light should not bother the birds, they want the food. :-)
@FrederickDunn9 ай бұрын
You're right, Barry.. it's the placement that's the biggest issue. This same feeder could easily just be placed out on a pole and the light would be excellent. I put mine under dense spruce branches. Or, if I just extended the feeder well out from the tree trunk. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
