Bird Houses & Nesting

I’m in Delaware, we just started to feed and take interest in our backyard birds. We had an enclosed back porch that had a small hole towards the very top of the roof. I had a candle that was nearly half burnt sitting on a shelf out there. I ent to grab a ash tray that was next to it and noticed what I believe was a little Wren that had made a nest inside of the candle. They hatched pretty fast and in no time they flew the coop. I’m still amazed by it ❤️

We just saw a Pileated woodpecker for the first time this past weekend, it was every bit of 13 to 14 inches tall from head to tail. We have a bunch of the Red bellied, Downy and hairy woodpeckers and just recently we’ve seen 2 really small Hairy Woodpeckers that must be pretty young. My parents had a cedar siding house and they had a woodpecker that started to beat on the wood. Like clockwork every afternoon when my dad would get home from work he’d go lay down for a nap and that woodpecker would start beating at the siding driving him insane. He told my mom he was going to shoot it one of these days 🤦‍♀️🤬 My mom called the department of wildlife to get help on trying to get rid of the little guy. She had my husband hang up the aluminum pie pans, those really shiny balloons and banners all over the house, roof and old tv antenna. It looked like they were celebrating every holiday and special event all at once. It worked and it saved the life of the woodpecker and kept my dad out of jail. Most people connect to cardinals when they lose a loved one but I connect with woodpeckers. We bought our first home just 4 months after we lost my mom and the very first thing we noticed was a red bellied woodpecker right outside the kitchen window sitting on the tree. We have several acres of land here and about 1/2 an acre is considered to be wetlands. I had no idea we had so much wildlife in our backyard until we built a new back porch this year. Now we spend the majority of our time sitting outside there watching the deer, raccoon, groundhog and of course all the beautiful birds that fly in for a bite to eat at one of the many bird feeders we’ve put out there. We have a few hummingbirds, what do we do about feeding them this winter, I’m worried the sugar water mixture I make for them will freeze.

Hello I saw another video earlier today on KZbin a lady put six or eight 2” screws remaining about an inch and a half out of the wood randomly in the top of the blue birdhouse and then ran a crisscross series of some type of wire crisscrossing the top of the birdhouse and she said she had real good with that deterring house sparrows from hanging around that house or landing on it, and the screws and wires did not bother the bluebirds at all. I’m in the process of trying to attract different birds do not have any bird houses up yet other than my feeders.

Thanks for your site. I never had birds in my house previously the house is about 3 years old. And I don't know but I'm guessing these are chickadees and I'm just so curious he comes and goes comes and goes every 5 minutes continuously never stops for days. Sometimes he goes in and then a minute later he comes out and flies away again. I can't figure out how to attach a picture

Put up 2 owl boxes, 4 wood duck houses and my first 6 eastern bluebird houses last week (really just hoping to get tree swallows established at our new place). That being said, cowbirds, grackles, starlings and house sparrows get shot on site here. Same with the raccoons, in an attempt to keep ruffed grouse on the property.

Is there a set rule regarding the amount of sun a birdhouse gets or direction the opening is facing? I would like to attract more chickadees, wrens, titmice, etc to my house(s) and deter the sparrows.

I heard that the opening should face East or Southeast. Just try different directions and see what the birds prefer.
