Us old timers understand something you young bloods don't. That is a promise made is a promise kept. There used to be a day in this world when a mans word was his bond. It's not always about the cash. And there is another little something out there especially in the last 20 years. I like to call it "last one to touch it syndrome." That means once you have done any repairs to the equipment. Every thing that goes wrong with that equipment from that point forward. It's your fault. Been there done that got the T shirt. Hundreds of times.

The customer is obviously fine, and I'm sure she is glad you got her AC running when it was 95 out. Better than waiting a day with no AC. Once I had to go take care of this 90-year-old customer, who's AC was freezing up intermittently. After some investigation I figured out that the blower relay would heat up and cut out. I wanted to put a new relay on and this old lady's friend came over and gave me holy heck for trying to rip her off. "Because if it was freezing up, the problem had to be outside." I said no the blower is cutting out making it freeze up. "oh no you're trying to rip her off." So I went back to the old lady and told her what I wanted to do, and when I did it, it fixed it. Everyone's a presumptuous know it all these days.

The worse helicopter I have ever encountered was in Asheville, NC where I was installing a fancy pump and lighting system for a downtown water fountain located in the center of the main bus stop area. I had installed the power and control panels as the fountain was being built and had come back to wire in the pumps, the spray ring, and the underwater lights. The control panel was low to the ground and I was sitting on my butt reading the wiring diagram and connecting the wiring. A drunk guy kept watching me and over time, he worked his way over to where I was sitting. He kneeled down behind me, placed his chin on my shoulder, and started telling me how to hook everything up. He stunk so bad I nearly puked. He was so intent on telling me how to do my job, he didn't notice me motioning to a cop who was patrolling the area. The drunk was hauled off, I shook the smell off me, and went about finishing what I was doing.

You didn’t have a new on your truck. It was last call of day and hot outside. You were doing her a big favor. I don’t understand how people could criticize great customer service.

We stayed at a cabin in Tennessee this past week and it had a fairly new carrier gas unit and the blower motor ran from the time we got there till the day we left (6days). Called the maintenance guy and he said it was throwing several codes, probably needs a board, and left. Heat still worked fine, just couldn't turn off the fan lol

I often carry a few used components for situations like this. A pretty much brand new part that was installed and came out shortly thereafter as the units they came from were replaced. No charge for the part and it’s helped some people who may not have a lot of money.

Hey Ted. First off. Thanks for all your great videos. Long time subscriber and saw the first video back when you downloaded. You did right in my opinion on the cap the way you did it without charging. Any other company would of gave her a 200% mark up on a new dual run cap. In my opinion and experience in the trade you have 2 kinds of service techs. Techs that are trained for sales and the true old school seasoned tech that will take the time to fix the equipment even if it is 25 to 30 yes old and not push a sale but professionally comment on age of equipment. You planted the seed and that's how you keep your customers. Always an awesome job done on all your videos. Always appreciate old school techs. You and Steve Lav both. Happy Holidays

I use to work for a company like the first one you described, hated every minute of it. Nothing but greed. I'm now with one who cares about customers. I don't feel pressured to sell anything other than what needs to be sold to fix the issue.

​@macmac3374 I get what you are saying but it is necessary to point out to customers when a furnace is due to be replaced and why. Give them the quote and hopefully you will get the business when they are ready to pull the trigger. I was a lube tech at a dealership ... I made as much money as many of techs pointing out problems I saw and what I would do to fix. About 50 percent of time people had me fix the things that I saw. I looked at it as good for them, good for me since I made more on customer pay jobs versus what factory reimbursed for warranty repairs. My point is te hs make the best salespeople and if you worked for me I would be expecting you to at least offer customer service on stuff that needed to be done. You don't get business if you don't ask.

I don't know what was the fuzz about that used capacitor. On a hot day, I'd be happy with ANY capacitor or bunch of paralleled caps that would enable it to run a.s.a.p. You provided the best service one can get. You made that happen for free and you replaced the temporary cap with a new one during another service call. Perfect. But that fan. Being 20 years old, being jammed by a bird. Suffering there, powered but inhibited to turn. And running again, after being freed up. I bet, on modern equipment, the fan would just burn out. They don't make 'em like they used to. This one was built to last forever. Nowadays, they're just built to survive the warranty.

Thank goodness for Goodman. I've probably taken dozens of birds and bats out of draft inducers, and the motors always started after. It probably did some damage to it. But on a 20 year old furnace is it worth replacing?

The old guy that I apprenticed under always said, bring in your bag/toolbox full of tools so you look like a professional HVAC tech. Nothing pisses off a customer faster than a guy running to his truck for the right tool when the customer is paying.

You're right about that, especially in a big city, image is everything. They want to see new tools, a clean crisp uniform, and the service done in 30 minutes, even though they're paying for an hour just for a diagnosis. An experienced tech really only needs a few tools and a meter, to diagnose the problem, and it's hard to keep clean when you're working in some of the hottest and dirtiest environments.

I"m right there with you on the basement thing. What was the person who installed that thinking?! Those open frame shaded pole motors are pretty hard to hurt. In regard to a video where I provided a used blower wheel to a customer, someone actually asked me if the customer paid for a new or used part. Right or wrong, I'm a big believer that if one's not honest, they won't be in this or most other businesses for very long... I hope the bird didn't suffer too much before it passed away. Not sure if I would have been strong stomached enough to get it out of there, even as crusty and dried up as it was.

We see birds in chimneys often. Took a 5 gal/ bucket of them out of one once. They set on the chimney to get warm then pass out from carbon monoxide and fall in. Just another day in HVAC!

If something burns clean, there won't be co. No flame disturbance when the blower came on. Not everyone has time to pull ductwork apart to check. You might see a crack with a camera but a camera can also mislead you.

I once did the same thing, didn't have a t-stat on the weekend (didn't charge her then) and I told the lady I would put in a used loaner t-stat till Monday, come Monday I call her that I'm ready to install new one and she just said its working fine and just hung up, sister in laws sister blocked both of them.

Sometimes I’ll use red rtv to use as a seal for the inducer motor or anything of a combustion seal it’s a high temp sealant and I also use it on heat exchangers

Best thing you did was not return with the new capacitor...she wasn't out any money that entire time and had A/C ! Now this time, its a combo discount to free the bird ! Looked like the bearings were still good on that fan and it didn't sound bad but as a service call plan, best to at least offer a replacement due to the heat it was likely subject to being jammed up. Good to know about the comments on the other video...I read most of them and likely not the ones that were deleted. Everyone has their opinion...not everyone has logic.

Hey Ted, I'm just a DIY-er, mechanic by trade. I can usually fix anything that needs fixing. I don't know everything, but I know people that do, lol. And I'm also a known helicopter (to a degree) at times, but only when it warrants it. But I know what it's like to have someone up in your business (Helicopter) when you're trying to figure out what all is going on, hanging over your shoulder asking all kinds of questions. I just tell them that my fees are 'double' if they watch. Triple if they ask questions! Eventually they get the hint, and leave me to my business. :-) This question is about what "Brand" of Run Capacitor is the best - for the money - in your opinion? I've used the Mars brand (like you used on this Condenser Unit, and they've lasted 1-2-yrs tops each time. Then I moved on to the B.M.I. Brand, which lasted about the same length of time as the Mars Brand. Then I switched over to the AmRad brand, which was about twice the price as the other two brands, but as per suggested by a fellow friend that's in the Heating & A/C business, but living in another State now. But I'd kinda got tired of having to replace them once every year, or two. And since replacing the Run Capacitor this last time with the AmRad Brand, it's been working perfectly for the past 5+ almost 6-yrs now with no problems what so ever. Did I answer my own question? :-/

Up here in Canada that furnace would have been condemned just because of that flue pipe is a fire hazard even if it was installed in 2002. Still has to be up to ode when we go to a call or the gas gets shut off.

that's a tall crawlspace, compared to many I've been in! although some had thin concrete so a creeper worked, you couldn't get passed the drains or the main beams on them and had to GI crawl with toes and elbows. not beer guts in there!

My Mom had a duplex that was so low to the ground that the only way to get to one of the 2 floor furnace heaters was to crawl between the floor joists and crawl backwards to get back out. No fun for sure.

a lady called me and stated her washing machine was possessed...i thought she was drinking to much...however while i stood there and told her there was nothing wrong with her new whirlpool washer ..it fired up and started to dry agitate. i remove the back cover and there was a dried up mouse with his teeth sunk up in the wiring harness.. i guess when it got humid enough it carried voltage and started the washer up..you just never know what your gonna run into out there
