Bird Photography: Photographing Bluebirds and other Thrushes in the Field

Today I headed out to a location with views of the western hills of Connecticut that has a mixture of open fields as well as mixed forest. I had only been to this location once before so I was excited to see what species I could find. It did not take long before I found a small flock of Eastern Bluebirds foraging low along a field that had been cut. The birds were perching on the stalks that were just above the surface of the grass so I decided to lay down on my belly to get some ground level photos and videos of them foraging for insects. While I was laying down, I also found a Hermit Thrush foraging along the edge of the field. The heat from the March sun was warming up the ground creating a mirage effect and distorting the images so I decided to head into the forest to see if I could find anything in there.

Great video Todd! Congrats on all the wonderful clips you captured. Bluebirds are so beautiful. May I ask what tripod and tripod head you are using? The low perspective of the bluebirds in the dry grass 👌🏻 made the colors of the birds really pop
