Great video, I really enjoyed it. A few years ago we had a feeding station in the garden which wasn't being well used. This annoyed the kids, who I think expected birds on the feeders all the time. A friend suggested I move it nearer the hedge and hey presto .. more birds. I would have thought and free food would be welcome, but as you say .. the safety of the birds is more important to them.

It certainly seems that way, since moving the bird feeder there's constantly birds on it. It's been great, I wish I'd have thought of that last year!

Really enjoyed this! I actually saw a dunnock in my garden for the first time today and was wondering what it was. Thanks to this video I now know! I find it interesting as well how you say starlings are common and blue tits are rare. I have only seen starlings in my area once, whether robins/blue tits/great tits are really common every day visitors!
@GregsWildlife4 жыл бұрын
The starlings are a constant in my garden, I had more video footage of them than anything else. It's funny actually, as I mentioned in the video I only saw the sparrows on the day I started to edit the video, but they've been pretty common ever since. The goldfinches seem to have disappeared, I haven't seen them for a while. The blue tits usually visit every day, but they don't hang around and I'm lucky to be there with the camera when they show up. I've had a great time trying to film these birds.
@chroniclesofqueennutmeg2 жыл бұрын
Its true it matters where you live i think because my garden has loads of blue tits only get starlings occasionally and after fledged? But in areas in South of England ive seen loads if sparrows and rarely any blue tits? Anyhoo i just think its great this country has so many beautiful birds ❤️ never really noticed them until i moved here over a year ago! Now i can't go a day without watching them outside my window! @GregsWildlife2 жыл бұрын
I'm afraid I'm not knowledgeable enough about bird populations to answer that. This weekend just gone was the RSPB big bird watch, so they should release some data on the reported garden visitors at some point. It will be interesting to see what those numbers say about the populations and if the lack of finches is common around the country or if you've just been unlucky.

Nice one Greg. Excellent commentary and a lovely selection of birds. Had to chuckle at the bathing Blackbird clip - wonky or what??? 😆 I love watching the birds have a good old splash about and must try getting some more footage of that sort of behaviour myself again soon. Have done so before (kzbin.info/www/bejne/rpjSnJh7lpyIY8k) but I want to try getting some more species. A bathing magpie would be great! We get pretty much the same species as you, plus Robin and the occasional Wren. I did try Niger seed years ago for Goldfinch but without success - the seed always muldered into a black mess before anything took an interest. I eventually succeeded attracting them, on the advice of a friend, with sunflower hearts! 😀👍 Keep up the good work Greg! 👍😎👍
@GregsWildlife4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! The birdbath is slightly wonky, but I think part of that was the camera angle! I've been trying to get a picture of a magpie for ages, every time I point a camera at them they fly away! So I was chuffed when one came into the garden. I was surprised I didn't see a robin at all, but my wife says she saw one today, so I'll have to keep a look out. I put some sunflower hearts out, but it's mainly the pigeons that like them so far.

I am plaques by Starlings ! The feeders ( over 21 of then), dishes, ground feeders, suet blocks and suet balls etc are monopolized by them. Even the bird bath is used by them and the other birds miss out. Sorry, Starlings are " flying rats " particularly if you have over 50 as I have.

I understand why some people might not like them and it is a shame the other birds don't get a look in at the feeders, but I still think Starlings are a beautiful bird.
