I contacted three persons to make this glider for me. Two ran away with my money. They were just a lot of blabla, but did really NOTHING. The third persons started making parts. I saw pictures of several parts, but ...now he has become silent. Very sad. I truly hoped that this project would be a boost for the beginner-pilots with low budget. The project only made me loose my trust in people. :-/

Sadly it is the other way. Two persons promised me to build a prototype for me. I send money for the materials. And ... both ran or just picked up the materials. This project did cost me a lot of money. Sorry, guys, i trusted the wrong people. Aldo Sibi, where ever you are, you made me loose faith in people. These days i am with a lady who is afraid of me flying. I am now just a web-flyer. I keep my dangers just to riding motorbike in the trafficjams of Antwerp. That is the story, guys. Nothing more. By the way ... the funding in total was 110 dollar.

Tim, i am not planning to earn money on this project. Like i said ... all plans are online. I just had hoped with the crowdfunding to keep my money for my other project. A motorized flying wing, the SilverDragon. The sad part about this glider-project is that i trusted a few persons that promised me to build the first prototype, but ... they just took the money and did nada, nothing, zero. A real disappointment for my trust in people.

Competing with the Red Goat glider (on KZbin) it's just like this one (retro-fits and all).
@nestofdragons
@nestofdragons 7 жыл бұрын
I was inspired by the GOAT, but i had to have it footlaunchable to avoid a lot of paperwork in Belgium. No certifications needed for footlaunchable stuff here. GOAT was too heavy to footlaunch. If you are referring to the electric engines as the retro-fits, you might see that we choose to do it differently. We use two engines next to the fuselage. Reason, we wanted to avoid that the pilot would be hit in his back by the forward sliding engine in a possible crash. The GOAT has not that problem. Other sources of inspiration were the HM5 of Henri Mignet (1930's), the Superfloater (i guess 1970's) and the Swift Light (2000's). We had to use a lot of stuff to get its weight low enough and take off speed low enough too.

Robert Hopkins Robert, i understand your reaction. Seems like not possible. But ...it was. Using my premade connection parts i really only needed 25 hours to assemble the parts to get to my half made glider. You can follow the work process on my Facebook account. It is named BirdGlider. And i need money to make the last parts. Making single parts for a prototype is more expensive than for a production line. My connection parts were all send to the USA. In a hope to see it build there before Oshkosh 2015. Sadly, the volunteer had health problems. But he will continue the project (when receiving the last parts) with the help of some students of a technical school. So ...the BirdGlider will be constructed. But no longer by me. I concentrate on two projects now. The DragonCub and one that i like to keep a secret for this moment. Can only say 40-50 HP and ...looooot of range. :)

I reckon a good cheap super structure could be made from carbon fiber sailboard poles and fishing rod blanks cut up in lengths (and joining contours prepared) and joined by wrapping string around the joints and the string laden in resin after winding (strong, cheap, easy and light). I did it making models from fishing rod blanks (and it ticked all the boxes).

If you want a motorized airplane for a disabled person, i would suggest a Flying Flea. It has no pedals and still is very short in turns and is easy to steer (watch my Flying Flea section). This design here is my attempt to make it possible to steer without the need of pedals. It is something that i needed for the time that the pilot stands up on a hill for a feetlaunch. With those two sticks he can fully control the airplane in the wind while he has no access to the pedals. But ... at the same time those two sticks can be used by a wheelchair user while he rolls down a hill for take of and for the rest of the entire flight. All he needs is help to get him rolling of the hill.

Lastly I will say that a 13 year old kid could build a better glider from free plans already in existence the goat glider which you sloppily copied is a better and proven design..... Many of them world wide search them b4 ever thinking of this joke

@jollyroger1 I don't believe i ever stole anything. I was inspired by the GOAT. True. But there are so many differences that we can really talk about a totally different glider. For me it was important to get the weight down and to be able to fly at running speed. To accomplish that we had to do a loooooot of changes. I like the GOAT as well, i ever guide them towards the GOAT plans on my website. I adore the work of Mike Sandlin. The Bird Glider is just something else. It is all about a choice. If you like simplicity, i would go also for the GOAT. If you like to prevent a lot of paperwork (which is the case in my country), you go for something footlaunchable. And the GOAT is not really that. That is the reason why we designed this one. I really don't like being called somebody who steals. I do a lot of aviation for free. I guide them in my website and give them free advise. I even put the plans of the BirdGlider for free on the internet. And yes, it is not proven ...yet. But it fully went through all needed simulations to be sure that it is strong enough for the allowed g-forces. A magnitude of tests were simulated. Stability, controlsurface cable movement, rigidity, ... . I am willing to be the testpilot of the prototype (if somebodies neck will break, it has to be mine). And ...i am a beginner pilot. If i do it step by step, i don't see any problem doing that. So, please, don't put me a label on which says "thief" or "crook". I just want to help light aviation. That is my main goal.

@@nestofdragons no, because I can't afford anything like that. 🤣 If I could, my first purchase would be an amphibious car. Followed by a flat top paramotor and an electric hydrofoil board (eFoil). And if anything left over, I would buy a new Delorean. They are still cheaper than most cars on the road today. But no, how much is one of those flying dinosaurs?

Not a Goat clone. It brings together a lot of airplanes. The HM5 of Henri Mignet, the SWIFT by Aeriane, the GOAT indeed too, the Superfloater and many more.

@nestofdragons
@nestofdragons 8 жыл бұрын
It is footlaunched. That makes in in my country easy to use. No need for certification. I only need a license that i followed and finished hanggliding schooling. Not sure about situation in USA. I guess it falls in FAR103. That makes it easier easier for you. :) You don't even need that license which i need. But ...don't go flying without some training, man. It is not the same as driving a car. You need to know how to avoid a stall. Those happen when you fly too slow. If you don't know how to react to them ...you get killed. That is not a suggestion, that is a promise. Many died that way. :-/

Why don't the Chinese guy who built it fly it, would you trust your life in a homemade Chinese airplaine?
@nestofdragons
@nestofdragons 7 жыл бұрын
Yes ... if a paper is included that all the materials are according the plans. I once was thinking about buying airgrade alu in China. I got a quota for normal alu. When i said it is not what i asked, he said "it is just the same". Ok, such a guy you need to avoid. But China makes good stuff too.

Brian, aviation is all about choices. This design was a collection of my personal choices, it has ideas from a bunch of other airplanes. GOAT, Superfloater, HM5 of Henri Mignet, SWIFT and a bunch of other designs. For me it would be ideal, but i can understand that for you something else might be better. If for you the feetlaunch is not needed, i would surely go for the GOAT of Mike Sandlin. Those plans are free to download somewhere.

How I understand American flight laws is that you don't need a pilot license if the glider has a motor but you land on your feet, or if it doesn't have a motor and you land on wheels. If it has both, however, a pilot license is needed. Don't quote me on this, I could be wrong. I have just heard stories of people flying illegally and getting heavily fined.

Construction techniques may have moved along a bit since my father flying in a wooden Primary glider. The fun factor has too. Flying sailplanes is an inexpensive sport widely practiced with far better performance at low cost via a club. However if you like to make things then consider plastics - particularly foam cored wings. Very quick and easy to make, light, higher performance foils and cheap. Electric drive is now feasible. Nest Of Dragons, it's been a long time since we connected on Sky Chariot project yahoo group "wheelchairplane". I somehow missed your announcement of this project until now. What is current status? We are working and moving forward.

+Broadened Horizons Inc. Maaaaaaark, that has been a while! Last thing i recall is that i wrote a poem about granting disabled persons their dream of flight. I have no more memory of how it went. The BirdGlider project is doubtful at this moment. Two reasons: at my side money, at the side of the prototype builder getting the materials. I hear very little from him lately. Was it he trustworthy? I do hope so. If not ...i lost serious money. But ...i haven't lost faith yet. I only hope that people act according to their promises.

Exactly how is a person in a wheelchair going to foot launch this? This request for funding is more than questionable, and what country is it originating from? Nothing new here from what I can see. Just a glider.
@nestofdragons
@nestofdragons 7 жыл бұрын
If you are in wheelchair, you cannot footlaunch of course. But you can roll of a hill, be towed , winched or even been bungeeshot from a hill. I say it is for wheelchair-users because it has no footcontrols. All controls are by hand. Right stick has elevator and elevons. Left stick has rudder. Top control does flaps.

Taste is a personal matter. I am not even trying to convince you to see the beauty in its basic design and its simplicity. Some stuff i also like are the Spitfire, The Bugatti 100P, the Sunderland, The Me163, the Arado 234, the BD-5. All are very different. I like them all for another reason. BirdGlider i like because ... it is just what you need to fly your first air-minutes/hours.
