Birding The North Maine Woods Is Wild.

Maine is the most heavily forested state in America. The North Maine Woods is millions of acres of adventure birding. Nobody up here but a few loggers and sportsmen...and an amazing number of birds. Northern forest birds include boreal chickadee, spruce grouse, black-backed woodpecker, American three-toed woodpecker, and Canada jay.

I love that you call them “babies”. Beautiful area. We ran into a migrating swarm of nighthawks up in that direction this summer. Hope to get back.

Nice shots of singing birds! Here in the mountain forests of western NC, I never see Veerys (Veeries?) in an open treetop. We’re on year one of our state’s Atlas. Lots of fun! Steve

Loads of fun in the north Maine woods. I've got another video coming soon, featuring some of my favorite spruce grouse. I go north in all seasons, but I would credit late May through late June as the best time. All the songbirds are back and singing. The grouse are on territory, making them easier to find. The rare woodpeckers are often noisy. The only real drawback is that the boreal chickadees tend to be quiet while nesting. Oh, and it can be buggy, though I don't find it that annoying. It's a controllable problem. Maine's black flies deserve a bad reputation, but sometimes that's way overblown.
